It is kind of ironic that advertisers buy time to show ads to get people to buy their products on your channel which has been dedicated to a no buy. Excellent!
Your videos are inspiring and I'm looking forward to watching them in the new year.
I work in advertising and might be able to help you understand. Advertisers don't get to pick the exact videos where they want to have their ads displayed. They pick ideal targets/demos, in this case it might be 'health & wellness/beauty' type videos. So advertisers don't have any idea that their ad will show up on Hannah's no-buy videos.
Also, advertisers only pay when users watch their ad in full or click through to their website from the ad. So the advertiser does not have to pay for all of those times a user hits "skip ad." Which explains why a video with more video views doesn't necessarily mean more revenue.

This was FASCINATING! And I love that you went behind the scenes with Ad Sense. Being a step-mom to a teenager who thinks TH-cam is glamorous, I’m going to have her watch this. I think seeing someone (besides me) talk about how much work it is and how little $/hr you make will be a little bit of a level set. :-)
I think it sounds like, if a channel is started with good intent and a realistic mindset, it could actually be a good hobby for someone to take on. It is interesting to hear just how much time goes in to the filming and editing process though.
If you tell her not to do something she will probably do it. But that's good she needs to try and learn things on her own. Trying to prevent her from either trying and failing or trying and succeeding, will dibilitate her and prevent her from growing.

I was going to comment this too. I thought TH-camrs were just weirdly obsessed with December and/or Christmas and did it as a TH-cam tradition. Of course it would be because of money.

@@ampersignia well, why not? it's their job. i'm sure every single one of us here takes every opportunity at our jobs to make extra money no matter the holidays. besides, they provide all of those videos for free for us to watch. don't forget that it's not free to make them.
everything in everyone's life is because of money. a no-buy year is all about money as well.

I see the phrase "by the numbers" and I click immediately as the true nerd that I am. Even though I didn't start my no-buy until July, I actually had the idea to start a spreadsheet at the beginning of the year detailing makeup purchases, things I removed from my collection (either by emptying or decluttering, detailing specific reasons for the decluttering), as well as a wishlist (to think things through and avoid impulse purchases). It definitely helped me understand my spending and even my true preferences, but it also tells me that I knew I had a problem way before I decided to deal with it.
On another note, thanks for demystifying (is that a word?) Adsense numbers a bit. It's rare to see a TH-camr talk so candidly about the subject.

It's awesome to see your subscriber count jumping. I could listen to you read the phonebook, but thankfully, you don't. I've been putting off taking care of my student loans for *eight* years and I just made my first big payment as my first step in my no-buy year.

This is such a great idea! I'm going to keep a tally sheet at the beginning of the year to track how how many items I finish throughout 2019. I do project panning as well, so empties and hitting pan excited me. You've helped SO many people with your videos! I believe your a pivotal part of the year of 2019 becoming a no buy year for many! I love that you turned a personal journey into an inspiration for thousands of people. That's huge! Congratulations, and we can't wait for the next inspiring project in the new year! I am happy to report that I have been inspired to start using up endless stores of tea and spices in my cupboards, spent many happy hours doing things I love instead of online shopping. That's what got to me most of all, the hours and hours we spend on shopping, then on servicing the stuff we bought-cleaning and laundering it, thinking of storage, organizing, decluttering old stuff, replacing it with new stuff... It's exhausting.

The Adsense revenue is amazing Hannah, I’ve been on TH-cam for 3 years and haven’t made that. That’s good since you are using it to pay what you owe and to save. I’m happy that the first year was successful all over for you saving money, finishing money (products) and making money to payback the camera and stuff. I’m still paying my camera because I spent my revenue on makeup 😑😑 lol. It is a new year. Hugs ! You just hit 10k Two days ago and already 11k congrats !

Your break down of the money you made brought me back to thinking about how much I make an hour for the print on demand sites (mostly society6) that I post art on. Adding up the time making art, uploading and fussing over my shops, and engaging in the community, I'm sure I make pennies an hour, if that, and my start up cost wasn't that bad. It's getting better though, I used to spend at least couple hours every day on it and now I'm at a 1/2 hour a day and making more. That first year is killer though. I had to treat my art more like a super obsessive hobby and not expect income from it. On a different note, I wanted to say before you're swamped with comments in the new year that it's been refreshing to watch someone as pale as I am, who also has red hair, talks as much as I do, is analytical and artsy and is self employed, feels similarly about the election, has recently become more money minded, and is exceptionally articulate and careful with language. I realized I was missing a several perspectives that I don't get elsewhere on youtube.... This is the part where I remind myself to not apologize for rambling, but also remind myself to be done rambling. Have a happy new year!

I’m so proud of your success!! I found your channel through Georgia Harris and I’ve actually shared your channel with a few of my friends. Because of you, I’ve decided to go on a low/no buy (and 2 of my friends are doing it too!). I’ve started heavily budgeting, written out my rules, and have already set up a payment plan to pay off a collections account from my divorce. I’m so excited to get closer to financial security (especially since my fiancé is good with money and I don’t want to scare him with my spending). I started from December 1st a no buy year. I started writing down all the things I wanted to buy so badly and till now I reached 600$ ( since I live in Israel everything is way more expensive here or by ordering)

And while I’m not embarking on a no buy in 2019, I am embarking on a low buy and have already changed my makeup spending habits drastically. I now have a finish one before you buy one policy in many categories of my makeup. Hannah your channel is a breath of fresh air. When I need a break from “ buy this!” “Try that” and the mindless mess I turn to your channel. So sad to hear you get paid so little. Your channel’s like therapy for this shopaholic. I’m only just starting to assess the damage my unhealthy spending has done. before youtube changed their monotization rules I used to make about $100 a year from adsense, now it is zero, zip, ziltch lol I just thought of that as a nice little bonus because I actually was just doing the videos for fun. No idea how many hours I spent editing so I probably was paid less than 1 penny per hour if I added it up hahahahha It is sort of ironic to think about how advertisers are paying to put their ads on anti-consumerism videos, but I suppose they are still able to reach consumers that way. I am half wondering with the rise of No-Buys if TH-cam may decide to demonontize them at some point.
I wish ad makers would realise the longer they make them, the less interest I have in them. I actually prefer to see 15 second snippets that I have to watch over 1 + minute ads that I can skip after 15 seconds. For youtubers I want to support with adsense I'll usually sit through a 30 second ad, but really 1 - 2 minute ads?

Santa brought me a beautiful new camera for Christmas. You’ve been an inspiration for me to start a TH-cam channel! When you spoke of consuming content and needing to jump in and create it really spoke to me.
I believe it will be a lifestyle channel. My SO and I have an interesting life for sure. I will probably throw some beauty stuff in there, but I want to also focus on our life off grid, cooking and other passions. Right now I’m going through a discovery/brainstorming phase and figuring out my camera, TH-cam, coming up with ideas, etc.. I’m hoping to put my first videos up by February 1 at the latest.

Here I am in your future in 2021, doing a no buy very much inspired by you. I think it’s wonderful to consider how much you are saving your followers/viewers. That’s a very big deal also.
This video was fascinating. I would really love to see a similar video at the end of 2019 to see how your spending habits change post no buy. Also, I got some gift cards and cash for Christmas and I engaged in a lot of shopping behaviors in the last week. I realized that I was wanting to want something rather than trying to decide between things I truly wanted. So I’m going to make myself wait a few weeks before spending any of it. If I hadn’t been watching your channel, I probably would have spent it all (and then some) already on stuff I was just sort of meh on. I can’t wait to see what you get up to next year!
This is all so interesting! I don’t have any serious shopping habits or money spending issues at the moment but I could always save my money rather than buying things I do not need. I am debating doing my own no buy year because I own so much! I would love to have a year of using and wearing what I have and decluttering my apartment.

I suck at math, but I still lust to hear numbers (or makeup math as I like to call it) like this! You and a number of other youtubers have really inspired me to finally woman up: In 2019, I'm going to be a responsible adult and stop overspending. I am still in University (not as expensive here in Germany as in the States, but still), I am living on less than what is calculated as the breadline here, and I managed to spend about 500€ on makeup this year, plus ca. 200€ on skin/hair/bodycare items. Now makeup is an important hobby to me so I'm willing to drop some money for it, also my collection is not at a point where I already have everything and am just buying dupes or stuff I'll never use, there's still items I am legitimately missing or wishing I had a better quality of. I already do not buy things I do not really want or use, I feel like I should stress that. But the sad truth is: Even if I don't do impulse buys, don't make purchases I regret from a 'did I get what I wanted for this money' perspective, *it is still overspending if I cannot afford it*. I could have afforded spending about 200€ on makeup since I was very provident with my other spendings this year, but that still means I spent 300€ more than I could afford. Money I in the end had to loan from my parents like a complete loser. For something I didn't actually need. Living on more than I have is not ok and I hereby make the promise to myself that I am done with it. No excuses, no exceptions. If it's not within my budget right now I'm not buying it. Shouldn't even have to be said, but I know I'm not the only one struggling with it. Anyone who might read this and knows they have to do the same: We are in this together. Let's make 2019 the year we actually have savings instead of debts!

I admire and respect how much work you put into explaining the nitty gritty of your no-buy. You really go in depth. In many ways I felt like I was in an academic setting when you talked about your no buy because you are able to put your thoughts into words. Also, I appreciate that you give concrete numbers in regards to the no-buy, which really helps me imagine your experience. That's a lot more reliable information than just an estimate with no exact numbers. I think this project is awesome!
I personally will not do a no-buy. I have a very small make-up collection and I generally don't buy makeup compulsively. However I find that I have gotten so much value from hearing the thought process behind learning to say no to products and shopping. Those are behaviours I am working on and hearing the thoughts behind your no-buy help me control my own buying habits.
I applaud you for being so incredibly candid about everything from what you saved on your No Buy Year to what your making from TH-cam.

This is so inspirational. I am a total makeup and skincare addict. I buy a lot of things I don’t need. I make about 20k a year, and just the thought of being able to save close to the amount you did by not buying more beauty products is enlightening.

I just came across your channel last night because Ashley Elizabeth mentioned you in her 6 month No-Buy video and I’ve been binge watching your No-Buy Year videos for several hours. I was surprised to see you’d just started your channel almost exactly a year ago and was even more surprised when you, in this video, mentioned you had about 8K subscribers. Thank you for being so open and honest. I don’t think people understand how hard it is to start your own business (no matter what that business is.). Being in the positive at all is quite an accomplishment. You should feel very proud.
I love seeing your numbers and you are so encouraging to those who want to try the same thing. I tend to be a natural "saver" keeping purchases on ice until I am sure I really need/want it and prefer a minimal and natural routine for beauty, but I love finding new ways to not spend and seeing how my buying choices "saves" me money that others don't think twice about spending.
I started a no buy on December 1st and will be doing it for the entirety of 2019. It has honestly felt so relieving to be doing it. I almost feel as if weights are being lifted from me and the idea of someday becoming a minimalist excites me!

I've heard, that the adsense you're making with a video depends on the number of people who watch the ad within a video completely til the end. So if the ad in the video is 15 seconds short, it is much more likely to have more ad-views than, let's say, a 1 minute ad. So it depends on the ad itself too and if the viewer is willing to watch it til the end...
So, in order to support you and your channel, we should all watch the whole ad in your video! ^^ Or at least it is, what I've heard.

You denigrated your math skills so much on this video that I have to say, as a physical scientist and an overall quantitative person, I approve your approach. Thoughtful ballpark estimates and upper/lower bounds are the way to go when you don't have exact information. I find students struggle with mastering the kind of informed estimate approach that you took at least as much as they do with more exact mathematical methods.

Omg you still have way more stuff than I do in my collection. Sometimes I feel like I've started to over consume but honestly, I barely ever don't use a product fully. If I don't, it's usually because it's been reacting with my skin or someone gave it to me so I hadn't researched it and been sure it will do what I want to do! You could do a second no buy year with your collection 😘

I went overboard with my purchases this year so much so that I reached rouge status in sephora even tho i dont live in the US or canada. I know i can never go on a no buy but i hope i can finish off most of the products i bought this year before i go on a buying spree again in 2019. Thank you so much for making these videos. They have been really inspiring and very helpful. I hope that you make much more than 19 cents per hour this coming year. That reminds me of my seasonal job planting strawberries in the Spring. I make minimum farm work wage which is REALLY quite low...but I like doing it. It’s an experience that is unique and not a lot of people can say that they hop on a cauliflower planter for a few days every Spring!

I have saved everything I used up over the course of a year two years ago and was actually surprised at how little I used. Now I know how much I need (& need to buy). I can only recommend it to anyone to get a grasp at how much you actually „need“

Congratulations on saving! I've done my own calculations and I've ended the year with a plus, too, so I haven't dipped into my small savings and have added a bit, but it could be so, so much better. Hopefully now that I know yearly numbers I can budget better.

I have a 9 month old beautiful daughter and I am currently buying a house for us, with my boyfriend, it's a really big big project, on top of having a baby and for them I want to cut back on what I frivolously spend on myself. I have cupboards full of skincare and make up, a closet full of nice clothes and at this point in my life (I'm 32) I figure I have all the material goods I could need for 2019 and more. So it is time to curb my spending habit and put it towards house renovation etc. I feel excited and confident. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Always love you videos! I started out 2018 on a no buy and found your channel in January. I did break the no-buy mid year to buy the Emily palettes which I needed up returning and to buy my favorite yoga pants on clearance at Target when they were discontinued. Overall I bought way less than 2017. I did go on a bit of a spree when my health crisis popped up- found a lung mass during a CT scan for kidney stones, have had mass removed and 2 lithotripsy’s for the stones just during this month alone, not counting the biopsies, scans, tests and other appts. The Sephora sales kind off got me and I bought some things I shouldn’t have thinking I “deserved” it. However all that did was create more financial stress during an already stressful time. I have since returned most of my stress purchases and plan to return a couple more things so overall it will be much less of a financial hit. I have restarted my no-buy and it will continue thru 2019. I know it will be successful as my perspectives have definitely changed. Life is too short and I don’t want to spend the rest of mine surrounded by stuff! I want to live and have experiences and buying stuff means no money for experiences. I don’t know why I didn’t realize this sooner.
