Great work and thanks for video. I did similar job today on removal and install of dash on my 84. Two issues I am working to resolve are the Speedo bouncing and the turn signal stalk not staying “on” when turning right. I changed the rear taillight boards to LED, rear side running lights to LED, and front turn signal lights and running lights to LED.
Had a difficult time watching the video, I've worked on Fiat Spiders since 1979, worked on them at the Fiat dealer when they were new, if he would unscrew the other end on the trans end, it would free up extra room to click on the back of the speedometer , this guy provides a good video to help Fiat owners in many ways, but I don't think he's that experienced on Spiders from years of working on them. The Quality of camera work is very good.
I bought a VDO Oil pressure guage to replace the Slow + in my case redundant clock (radio has an accurate non-fogged up clock).Almost ready to redo the Dash. Love the LED upgrade idea and the heads up about the turn signal. ***an possibility that you are thinking similarly?*** VDO Sending unit is Key I'm told. The It. one does not send info at low pressure but the VDO one does...I just don't know how to connect it. I'll soon have a useful guage on the dash that is not hooked up:-)>
Thanks for all your informative videos. It has motivated me to take up few projects on my Fiat Spider. Just purchased on Christmas 🎄 I have a question for you which LED is used for turn indicator, brake lights? Have ordered dash led as per your Amazon link.
These guys have full kits available. This is for the 79 but would be similar for a number of the year models www.superbrightleds.com/vehicle/?find=1979-fiat-124-spider-7090735
You can fix the quartz clock by cleaning the inside gears or the electric motor. Once running it’s a power hungry little bastard...it will kill the battery in a matter of days. Replace the clock lense with a glass one easily made at the glass shop. Nice job.😀🇨🇦
How much brighter were the gauges with these LED bulbs ? Does the dimming work ok? Your videos are great. I am restoring a 1983 Pininfarina Spider and doing many of the same things you did, Very Helpful, Thanks for posting !
The LED are brighter in the gauges. Leave the blinker light standard. Take the speedometer cable loose from the transmission before pulling the cluster. The other benefit is lower power draw on the system
There's not enough space to pull out and disconnect. Have to pull more cable through the firewall to make room to disconnect. Watch me do it wrong and learn.
I have a ‘79. I did the LED upgrade…paying attention NOT to swap the turn signal one…but now my battery light comes on for a bit, then goes off…reading about it, some say that the light is wired in such a way to interact with the alternator, and that by putting a LED you take this “interaction” away due to the minimal voltage required by the LED…thought to throw this out there as a precaution. I’m going back to incandescence type for all the “warning” lights, leaving the background lights in LED. Will follow up here with the results.
I wrestled with the speedo cable attachment several times on my 84 Spider. It's almost impossible to reach. It kept coming off. Eventually I held it in place with wire to the speedo case.
@@ELDESTBuilds The video seems to be missing where the cable attaches to the back of speedo gauge ?? You said something about reaching underneath? Does it thread on ??
@@5589daniel at the beginning the end of the cable is broken away from the rest. The cylindrical plastic piece was glued to the cable end. The whole unit slips over the part of the speedo and clicks into place. I can't do screenshots in the comments but if you send me an email, I'll try and explain more if necessary.
The white plastic piece with the little tabs at the end of the cable is actually two parts on my 1980 Spider 2000. One is a collar that slides over the plastic tabs to hold them in place around the lip at the speedometer. Don't try to get the tabs over the lip by pushing on the collar, because that just prevents the tabs from spreading. Instead, with the collar as far back as you can get it, use a flat blade screwdriver to nudge one of the tabs over the lip. The whole piece should easily fall into place. Now you can pull the collar up as far as it will go to secure the attachment.
Jesse, when I clicked on the amazon link above and received the LED bulbs the heads were too big to fit into the instruments. I had to re order a different LED bulb just fyi
I am having a heck of a time trying to keep the plastic end on speedometer cable from coming off. The plastic tabs are supposed to click on the back of speedometer, but I cannot seem to be able to get it to click on after trying a cpl dozen times....what's the trick Eldest??
The tabs were broken in this one. Had to glue them back on. Take the speedo loose from the transmission. It just unscrews, and pull more cable into the dash for extra working room.
I did not. Busted clock is still in there. Oil gauge wouldn't be too hard. Buy one with the sender, install on the bung near the oil filter, run the wires to the dash, use the existing light, done and done
I installed oil pressure sending unit warning light switch, oil pressure sending unit with the oil sending unit adapter. Ran a line to the new gauge. My oil light came on first thing so wondering if my wire connection in the back of the gauge is wrong.@@ELDESTBuilds
The hazard switch not functioning correctly will affect turn signals and sometimes the wipers for some reason. Clean the grounds on the star above the ignition switch. Check or replace the turn signal relay. The LED lights in the dash make a huge difference, draw fewer amps, and make less heat.
If the car is driving, it should be working. If the car is being repaired, you could take the cable loose from the transmission and spin the inner drive cable. In this video the mounting point was broken. Remove the cable from the transmission before removing the dash.
How do you take off the middle panel where between the glove box and the speedometer? I gotta get to the wiring behind it but I don’t know how to take it off.
Question, how many back light bulbs are there in each instrument gauge? I replaced one per gauge. But my speedo and tach look to be a different brightness then the smaller ones. Wondering if I missed a bulb or something?
Yes would be similar. The four nobs hold the cluster on. It's easier if you remove the steering wheel and speedometer cable from the transmission first.
Does the Speedo Cable End Screw into the speedometer flange on back of Speedo ?? I cant seem to get it to Stay On my 83 Spider ??? Driving me NUTS after 20 hours..... PLEASE HELP
Screws into the transmission. On this one it is a snap on fitment, but it was broken off and had to glue the plastic bits together to make it click together.
Yes I know how tight it is, have the scratches on my hands to show for it. Think I hv it...Hopefully!!! I was wanting to swap my 85 mph with a 140mph but realized that has a threaded connection, so put the 85 back in, I just purchased and installed new speedo cable, and NOT going to buy another one and reinstall it. I'm still having problems getting indicator lights to function....VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

Welcome, I had a few issues getting all the LEDs to light up in the tail light section. Corrosion on the fittings had to be cleaned off.
Another great helpful video. And that medieval jango tattoo is awesome!!!
Thanks buddy, not too many know who it is. Welcome to NerdClub
These Videos are amazingly helpful!!

Gauge install should be pretty straightforward. The sending unit mounts on the oil filter assembly. Then it's just hooking up the wires

This one has a rotten/crumbly plastic gear.

Im sure there is but I didn't change it.

never wants to go back in

Sounds interesting, may take a few moments for the charge to work through

I removed it from the transmission to get it attached, then pushed it back into place with the cluster. They are definitely sensitive to move around.

@rosedumont8253 check your ground connections
I have 79 spider 2000 and my blinkers and hazardes not working- DASH lightning - how can I make that a lot brighter?
The hazard switch not functioning correctly will affect turn signals and sometimes the wipers for some reason.
Clean the grounds on the star above the ignition switch. Check or replace the turn signal relay.
The LED lights in the dash make a huge difference, draw fewer amps, and make less heat.
Awesome
Thanks
How can I know if my speedometer is bad ??
If the car is driving, it should be working. If the car is being repaired, you could take the cable loose from the transmission and spin the inner drive cable. In this video the mounting point was broken. Remove the cable from the transmission before removing the dash.
It would've been a lot easier if you drop the steering column to deal with putting that back in
Considered that, not necessary just remove the steering wheel.

The beveled ring around the outer
nobs spin off

The big gauges have a few for the indicators and such but don't change the turn signal build to LED. It will blink funny.

at the 5:00 minute mark

My daughter sent you a reply on your Facebook about my car.
I also had her reply about my new seats to someone who was interested in that.. I obviously do not have a Facebook
My speedometer cable had the same issue I've been there done that fixed it this spring I shared your pain.
it is in the description section, below the video, the "show more " button
Got it, you have been putting some miles on it.
could these be installed with the existing wiring, or does it need a relay?
Dash lights do not required the LED relay
You’re Speedo cable came
