I am so glad that they won against that contractor. I would still put in a report for the bbb that that contractor is doing shady stuff. He would not have willingly given them a grand without knowing that he was well up the creek without a paddle if they wanted to push it. But just think. Not every elderly person has a possessed with fury daughter to make things right.
The story with the daughter who called bs on the contractor warms my heart. I think many of us have had similar situations with contractors or businesses in general so the victory felt particularly good. Plus she did something of real tangible help for her parents that she obviously loves, respects and appreciates. That work she did at school was perfect timing.

The big thing with “mailbox baseball” is that it is a Federal felony. If you have proof of who did it, contact your local Postal Inspector. Local police would only consider it “minor property damage”. To a Postal Inspector it is a crime punishable by up to a fine if $250,000 and/or jail time of up to 3 years. There is a real story that a recent high school graduate that went on a spree that cost him his full ride scholarship to college, jail time and a financial penalty. His father, the local sheriff lost his job as the car the teen drove was a former police cruiser that wasn’t obtained by proper means. The mailbox 📪 basher in what you relayed got his judgement in Civil Court. The homeowner could forward copies of the trial documents to the Postal Service, they wouldn’t need a full trial as the driver admitted to the attempted destruction of a mailbox. The Postal Service could apply for a “directive judgement” through an Administrative Law Judge. He was under oath, it isn’t double jeopardy as one case is for injuries in Civil Court and the other for Postal Crimes in Criminal Court.
Yet there are also stories of the baseball player suing the mailbox owner over their now destroyed car and because the car is damaged but the mailbox is not, mailbox owner pays for damage

Your personal mailbox is by extension property of the USPS, because of the service it provides. If mail is in a destroyed mailbox that adds the “interference with the mails” as a secondary charge. Most people don’t know to involve the Postal authorities and the police are either ignorant of the magnitude of the offense or just won’t involve the Postal Inspectors.
