Fruits Basket as your first Shojo series is fascinating considering that it's literally one of THE best Shojo there is. It's definitely worth the commitment.
Fruits basket is basically “PTSD: The Manga”. Everybody has some level of trauma, and it’s all about these very traumatized people finding each other and helping each other mutually heal. It’s so good and so cathartic. Also yeah Uo and Hana are my favorites, especially Hana. She’s so weird and funny
Tohru, Uo and Hana are a great depiction of female friendships. You can and do believe that these 3 girls, who are all different personalities, are actually friends. It makes sense that they would gravitate towards and find each other. They're so sweet. And even though they each have their own home life that prevents them from taking her in, they still are able to care for her and show that they care for her.
I haven't read the manga and only experienced Fruits Basket through the anime, which is excellent, and I can wholeheartedly say that it's one of my all time favourite series. The character writing is impeccable and while it might give you this impression that it's a very cutsey story with some sad moments sprinkled throughout the narrative to keep it interesting early on, the reality couldn't further be away from the truth. This has one of favourite depictions of trauma and abuse that I have ever seen in a story. I hope you continue on with this wonderful series and love it just as much as I and every other fan have.
I agree. I know it’s considered a shoujo but it feels much more slice of life to me. The anime had me invested in characters that in other series would have been insignificant background characters
I watched the anime first too and damn is it not one of the best shows I ever watched. Then I borrowed the manga from my friend and oh my gosh it just got better. The rare little details I thought that could’ve improved upon the anime happened in the mangas!!!
I hate love triangles but this was resolved in such a good way that I didn't mind it. I think it's so rare for romance stories to go into the different kinds of love you can feel for a person that are not romantic and it was so realistic for him to be confused by what he was feeling as well. Just some excellent writing!
"Don't spoil me please" Yeah... we do have to be asking people to not spoil things for us. I know the excitement is real and this doesn't come with bad intentions, but, for the love of God, please just let people discover things at their own pace...
Just finished the anime, pretty sure I cried every episode or almost every from around mid s2 onward, I love how it bounced off the humour so well, I don't know if I would have cried as much if I hadn't been laughing so much a few minutes earlier
I feel like if you've gone thru a similar trauma as these characters, you're very likely to get attached to this series (speaking from personal exp). In many ways this series is anime/manga Encanto. Hope you continue the journey!
Fruits Basket is one of the dearest manga I've ever read. I love all the characters. I love their arcs. I love how complex they are. Tohru is one of the best-handled protagonists I've ever seen- the exploration of her character towards the end of the series is so refreshing, given that this is very much a "classic" soujo. The reveal of the main antagonist twist works better in manga form than anime, I find. And the steady passage of time isn't as severe either when it comes to younger characters aging up. So much trauma is explored. And I think delicately. The age gap romances are not my cup of tea, but they're interesting in their own ways, so at least there's that. But the main couple is BEST AND I WILL NOT HEAR ARGUMENTS!!! 🍙😾
Reading about Tohru changed me in my teens, really helped me to see the kind of person I could be. As an adult I can see her flaws, but that just makes her more lovable. She'll always be close to my heart. I'm really excited to sort of rediscover this series through your experience with it.
So glad that this is your first shoujo! It’s not “perfect”, but I’ve never felt as deeply attached to an entire cast as I have with Fruits Basket’s. On top of that, the drama is really engaging and doesn’t come at the expense of its characters. Coming back to this series after 15+ years gave me a similar reaction that you had in terms of the characters’ interactions and boundaries lol. It does at least add to the complexity of relationships throughout the cast, which is a big part of why they all feel so realistic and relatable.
Fruits basket is one of the best shojo series to start because it's such a beloved classic with lots of character development. I'm really glad you're gonna continue the series!
wow I am HERE for this, Furuba was also my first shojo manga and getting to see someone else read it for the first time (and also as their first shojo) is just such a treat, now I have to go re-read it!!!
I love this series! I'm so happy that you are reading it. The art style does change as the series goes on, it becomes much less exaggerated. (Although it's a very progressive change so you might not notice it when you're just reading through it, but if you compare the last volumes with the first ones, the difference is huge!)
I'm so happy that you're liking Fruits Basket. This is a series I always come back to when I need a mixture of cute, funny, wholesome, and traumatic storytelling. I've only seen the anime thus far, but I'm slowly collecting the manga to do a readathon for the series. This was one of the original animes that got me hooked on the genre. I'm defiantly team Kyo as well. I feel like I always relate to a different person each time I go through this series. I hope you make more than one video because there is going to be a lot of stuff you're going to want to cover, and I don't think one video is going to cut it. Fruits Basket is such a great series, I got introduced through the old anime, which has its charms, but the remaster is so much better in both appearance and pacing (and the fact it properly finishes). Hope you read to the end! The hat is an interesting plot point with lots of red herrings.
The old anime is such a big part of my teenage years that I can't bring myself to watch the newer one. The atmosphere and music are just perfect imo in the old one.
@@amuro9624 - I _sincerely_ encourage giving the new series a try. The old anime has huge nostalgia value to me (in fact, it's one of my favorite anime ever from my high school years!), so I decided to rewatch it right before the new series started airing. I can definitely see some of the criticism for the old series, but I still love it to pieces! ...And yet, I was _not_ prepared for the sheer level of power the new anime had over the old anime for me. It improves upon _everything_ in practically _every_ way, from overall storytelling, to hitting the comedy just right, to emotional maturity, to powerful visuals and acting (comparing Japanese VAs, for context), and amazing music (which is the only thing the old anime has a chance of competing with). There is no reason if you like the original that much to forego the new anime. I promise you'll appreciate it that much more because of it.
i would love more in-depth videos on fruits basket from you!! the way you express your thoughts and engage with the stories you read is one of my favorites out of the channels i watch and my jaw DROPPED when i saw this video title, because this was something i never knew i wanted and now i need more 😂
I absolutely adore Fruits Basket, and I'm so happy to see you cover it. The mangas came out when I was going through some really rough times, and the themes in it resonated deeply. I love the way it gently handles trauma, recovery, and moving forward in life. Can't wait to see your future thoughts!
I want more Booktubers to read this series so I'm glad you are discussing it. I wouldn't mind all sorts of videos on Fruits Basket. I'm also jealous that you have no spoilers for the series because I was told pretty much everything so I couldn't see if I could guess different plots points of the story when I read it.
I haven't read the manga but watch all of the anime of this one and oh man. I've cried so much. So much heart strings and nice twists. I love this series so much!
I love this series so much! It's my absolute favorite manga series, and I am SO glad you're finally reading it! It's going to break your heart and make it whole again and you'll love it!
It is so easy to get emotionally attached to these characters. I both read the manga and watched the anime and there was a point in the anime where I cried nearly every episode following, but was still excited for the next week’s tear-jerker. It was an emotional roller coaster.
I'm absolutely overjoyed that you started this manga Fruit Bakset is definitely on my top 5 i can't wait for you to advance more in the story i feel like you will love all the themes explored and the characters development is in my humble opinion amazing just have some tissues ready because some chapters are gonna hurt in the best way
My favorite thing about Fruits Basket is that it has an incredible blend of silly, heartfelt, serious, and heartbreaking. I'm so glad you gave it a chance and kept going :)
I'm so excited that you're reading Fruits Basket! Its a wonderful series. It's definitely one of my favorites when it comes to characters and overall wholesomeness. I can always count on it to make me feel good, even though it tackles some pretty dark subjects. It was really popular in the early 2000s, so yeah, a lot of the comedy hasn't aged well. 😅 Despite that, it's really a fantastic series. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the rest of it!
Spoiler-free comment here: I'm so happy you're reading Fruits Basket, I recently got the collector's edition of the books myself and reread it after having lost my original set years and years ago when I was still in high school. I can tell you that the boundaries between the characters does get explained, and as for the 12 a lot of it gets explained when you start going into their backstories, the long and short of it is pretty much "its the curse." But I'm so excited to see how you enjoy the story as it keeps on. Thank you for letting us have a peek at your reading experience.
Fruits Basket is one of my favorite anime/manga/pieces of media, and I can't wait to hear your thoughts about it! I adore the characters and their growth, and though there are definitely some plot lines and humor that didn't age well in my opinion, all of that is minor compared to the work as a whole. Highly encourage continuing the anime as it's a beautiful adaptation!
This is my favourite manga of all time, I remember reading it when I was younger and it’s always stuck with me. The story was the closest thing to perfect for me! 💖 I really hope you end up loving the whole series
Since you started manga, I waited for this video about Fruits Basket! I'm glad you're enjoying it! The boundaries issue is related to the curse and how none of the Soma had a normal childhood and don't really know how to interact with other people, especially the ones exterior to the curse and it has been implemented in them that other people liking them despite the curse is weird, so Tohru is an oddity but caring person to them so they cling to her. Basically, the author had the entire story outlined before she started it and discovering how everything is explained and developed and rereading to hidden find gems and how everything makes sense is a joy. I really hope you will love the rest of the series!
I'm so glad you're making videos on the manga series, you mentioned a while ago you were going to start it and I was very excited! I've read the manga and watched both anime series multiple times each, it's one of my favorite stories 😁
I agree the mangas panneling can be quiet confusing and I can't say I'm a fan of the art style either but that is exactly why I watch the anime. And now fruits basket will always have a special place in my heart. It's an amazing story and I hope you do release more fruits basket videos because although I've seen it, I love watching your deep dives and you point out small things I might not have noticed
I absolutely love this manga (the anime is really good too) I love it's themes, how it talked about abuse inside the family but also how to break away from that and heal. How important is friendship and forming bonds with people that truly love you, idk it made me cry so much but also warmed my heart. I'm really looking forward more videos talking about this manga and I want to hear what you think
I never clicked so fast on a video! PLEASE keep us updated on your reading journey. Fruits Basket holds a special place in my heart. It only gets wilder and better the longer it goes.
I'm so glad you're reading this series! I do recommend the recent anime adaptation over the manga, only because it is crazy loyal to the source material and has the best music! The opening and closing credits made me very on multiple occasions.
I would love multiple videos going through your thoughts. Fruits Basket is amazing! So many great back stories and reveals. I have read the whole series many times. As I am listening to you talk through what you have read so far makes me excited to hear about how you feel about what's to come
I'm so so glad you're enjoying Fruits Basket!! It was the first manga I read all the way through and I still have such a deep love for it. 1. If you're interested in uncovering the trauma ho HO buckle your seatbelts cause you're in for a ride! 2. YES GIVE US ALL THE VIDEOS!! 😭😭 3. YES TEAM KYO!!!!
I read this when I was very young and only paid attention to the romance but I reread this series as an adult and was surprised to see how much trauma the characters go through. I really loved the character work of this series.
I'm really glad to see you tackling some shoujo and Fruits Basket is a fantastic series. For a shoujo series that's a mix of romance and action, I recommend reading "From Far Away". Sadly, it's no longer in print and the only way to buy it new is digitally. There are a few shoujo series with a fair bit of action in them so your viewers can definitely give recommendations if you want a break from the shounen series. If you decide to try a josei series (manga for adult women), I really recommend trying Princess Jellyfish. It's not too long as it's just 17 volumes (published in English as 9 omnibus volumes). Oh, if you want to try a Japanese fantasy novel series, I highly recommend "Spice & Wolf". The original series is 17 volumes (note that these volumes are short, only a few hundred pages) with additional volumes that are basically side stories being published (plus a spin-off series as well). The main female lead is truly fantastic.
I read these mangas so many times when I was a teen. I reread the whole series about a year ago, and I still loved it, in part because I understood so much more about the story than when I was younger. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the rest of the series!!
I'm so happy you're enjoying Fruits Baskets! It's been my favourite manga for 10 years and it's one that I regularly reread because it always manages to move me. The best thing about it are the characters, how different they are from one another, their relationships and how they grow along the story. Can't wait to see your reactions!
Honestly I'm so thrilled because by pure coincidence you've just been working your way through all of my fave manga, OP, HxH, and now Fruits Basket. I can't wait to see you get through the rest of this story!
Love the way the characters unravel and grow as the series continues. Not many series get laughing, sobbing and cheering the way fruits basket does. Would love to hear you talk about shigure and hatsuharu in future videos as they are amoung my favourite characters. P.S. totally get what you're saying about the artstyle, one of great things about the 2019 anime is how much of glow up in terms of character design it is
it’s so crazy to me that I’ve been watching your book reviews and videos for years, and now that you’re getting into manga you’ve already gotten to three of my all time faves (one piece, hxh, and fruits basket)
Fruits Basket is one of my favourite anime ever You'll definitely love it since you're a big fan of the theme of family bonds and emotional character relationships and this story does them perfectly
Omg please continue discussing the series in parts. I have been waiting so long for you to finally find fruits basket and I am so excited for this series of reading reviews. Fruits basket was one of my first manga series I ever picked up read, collected, and retained. If I list out my top 5 favorite anime it’s: 1) Fruits Basket 2) HxH 3) Attack on Titan 4) Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (which is the anime series that adapted the manga) 5) Haikyuu (a sports anime, volleyball) And if I lost out my top 5 favorite characters it’s: 1) Killua 2) Tohru Honda God I am just so excited for you reading this series.
yeeessssss, when i saw that you were reading it in your second channel, I was like checking everyday for a full on review of the series. This series has many shoujo characteristic in the beginning with its art but it does gets more "realistic" little by little if I can call it that lol. There are so many moments in the series that had me crying sobbing like a baby and moments that had helped me so much and I will always remember. I'm so excited to see more of the series!!!!!!
Yay, a reason for me to re-read fruits baskets. This was the manga my sister shared with me to get me into reading manga, I'm so happy that your reading it.
I am just about to watch season 3 episode 13, the finale of the series. Though there were a few things in the series I didn't like (especially a character related to Akito that comes out of left field and leaves just as abruptly shortly before the final confrontation), I really did like the whole thing. Romance is not my thing, but psychological and slice-of-life stories kinda are, and me viewing this series as that really helped my enjoyment. I especially liked that, even if we eventually understood everything behind the mess of a life Akito had and why he did everything he did (I know, no spoilers 🙂 -- side note for those who know: I was spoiled on the BIG Akito reveal, but I actually enjoyed the series more cause I picked up on much of the foreshadowing along the way) the series still didn't act like his actions magically became ok, cause they are not. I would have wanted more severe punishment, but who knows? I might that get on episode 13. Probably not though, but oh well. I'm not too bummed about that. Edit: Welp, that Akito ending was everything I didn't want and was afraid would happen. Everything else I am fine with, though. Oh well, still, not too bummed about it.
Fruits Basket was the first manga I ever read and it is still near and dear to my heart, so I am excited you are enjoying and talking about it on the channel. I for one would love to see more fruits basket content.
This series has a special place in my heart as my favorite series, and I’m so glad you are going to be experiencing it fresh. I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on it.
It is very different from what your used to, however, it is SUCH A good series. I’m so glad you’re able to explore this story and these incredible characters!
Thanks for this video - I’d love to hear you continue to share your thoughts throughout the series! I held some similar reservations early in the story when I was introduced to it through the recent anime adaptation, but it just continued to grow on me and to pay off more beautifully than I had imagined. I switched to the manga during the second season when I could no longer wait a week to see what would come next, and it became the first manga I ever read. I hope it becomes ever clearer as you read on why it’s a special series for so many people!
Yay! I can't wait for you to get into the meat of everyone, it gets so good! I just love so many characters in this show. I wanna read the manga now with the sequel and prequel books as well. Ive only watched the anime, and it made me cry multiple times. I hope you go through the anime as well because I loved it!
Honestly you picked one of the best romcom shojo anime, one piece and fruit basket are my fave. Your in for a wild ride, the drama is the best I've ever seen.
ahhh I'm so glad you've picked this up!! it's a wonderful and beautiful story, this first section is great, but there's so much more to look forward to. and I'm glad your open about the aspects you don't like, wether I agree with those points or not. and I'm especially interested to see more of your thoughts on Yuki, he's not only my favourite character of the series, but became one of my favourites of all time :)
I love that you're reading this! I love this! If I can recommend another shojo that's short and cute, but not without a few problems, but very interesting, take a look at Paradise Kiss!
I absolutely adore Fruits Basket. I've only seen the recent anime adaptation, but it's absolutely incredible. Every character is really well fleshed out and the character drama never feels forced. I'm so excited to see what you think about it!
I experienced this series only through the recent remake of the anime, but I have to say that I really fell in love with it. I do feel that the overarching plot is a bit clumsy at times, but the characters are truly amazing, most of them feel like wonderful people and friends. The friendships are the most beautiful part of the series in my opinion and their dynamics have moved me to tears at every turn!
I am so giddy with excitement that you are reading Fruits Basket. Since you said you were going to start reading manga I've been waiting for you to read this. I am so happy and excited for you to experience this amazing manga series!

I can't wait to see you talk about the rest of the series, it's near and dear to my heart and I hope that you enjoy it as well
I experienced this series through the anime and it’s one of my favourites so I’m so happy to see that you are reviewing it!
I as a 28 year old man love this series. I’ve cried several times.
I just got some of these off eBay for my son I hope he likes them.
One of the rare few series that have a perfect ending IMO. It is special.
Spoiler-free comment here:
I'm so happy you're reading Fruits Basket, I recently got the collector's edition of the books myself and reread it after having lost my original set years and years ago when I was still in high school.
Fruits Basket is my favourite manga series of all time, I'm so happy you are reading it!
already crying with just your recap. hope you're enjoying it!
Love this series so much. The 2019 anime is great as well
Don't worry about the art style, it gets better and better as the series progresses.
WHAT A GREAT CHOICE! Fruits Basket is exceptional. Whoever is suggesting series for you are doing a phenomenal job
I'm so happy to see you enjoying the manga, it's a really wonderful story
The main female lead is truly fantastic.
ooh glad you gave it a chance 💗 i personally watched the anime and it's really good . Can't wait for more of fruits basket
I clicked on this video so fast. Fruits Basket is one of my favorite mangas. I love hearing all your thoughts.
I love the fact that you are enjoying this manga, no matter if you do one more, or a couple(hopefully!) I'll follow it!
Love your channel :)
I love that you're reading manga and reviewing it.
Fruits Basket is one of my favourite anime ever
You'll definitely love it since you're a big fan of the theme of family bonds and emotional character relationships and this story does them perfectly
Omg please continue discussing the series in parts. I have been waiting so long for you to finally find fruits basket and I am so excited for this series of reading reviews. Fruits basket was one of my first manga series I ever picked up read, collected, and retained. If I list out my top 5 favorite anime it’s:
1) Fruits Basket
2) HxH
3) Attack on Titan
4) Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (which is the anime series that adapted the manga)
5) Haikyuu (a sports anime, volleyball)
And if I lost out my top 5 favorite characters it’s:
1) Killua
2) Tohru Honda
God I am just so excited for you reading this series.
This is my favourite shojo manga. The fact that you’re reading it is so exciting for me. Keep going!
I love Fruits Basket so much I'm so glad you're reading it!
So happy to finally see you go through Fruits Basket
yeeessssss, when i saw that you were reading it in your second channel, I was like checking everyday for a full on review of the series.
Oh well, still, not too bummed about it.
this is why watching anime is important than just reading the manga. you literally know what is humor and what is not.

I love hearing all your thoughts on this series! I would love to hear ALL your thoughts on depth as you go lol.
It makes me so happy to see you loving this series immediately.
So happy! I’ve been wanting someone to review it for so long!
Please continue with this! I love this series
Yay! I can't wait for you to get into the meat of everyone, it gets so good! I just love so many characters in this show. I wanna read the manga now with the sequel and prequel books as well.
Ive only watched the anime, and it made me cry multiple times.
I hope you go through the anime as well because I loved it!
Thanks for reviewing this series, I really love it!
I want deep-dives into this series! There is so much potential for Merphy-rants (and thoughtful reflections❤️)
Fruits basket is definitely all about that trauma. It's very psychological to the point it feels incredibly dark.
Oh you are in for a wild ride of emotions fruits basket really knows how to get you in the feels.
Any chance for a follow up video with your thoughts for the rest of the story? :D
Love this series to me it only gets better
I absolutely adore Fruits Basket. I've only seen the recent anime adaptation, but it's absolutely incredible. Every character is really well fleshed out and the character drama never feels forced. I'm so excited to see what you think about it!
Fruits Basket is my favourite shojo, it has interesting views on healing, parenthood and family. I'm so excited for you to read it
I experienced this series only through the recent remake of the anime, but I have to say that I really fell in love with it. I do feel that the overarching plot is a bit clumsy at times, but the characters are truly amazing, most of them feel like wonderful people and friends. The friendships are the most beautiful part of the series in my opinion and their dynamics have moved me to tears at every turn!
Fruits Basket is amazing...please keep posting. I am new to anime and this one really captured my heart.
I am so giddy with excitement that you are reading Fruits Basket. Since you said you were going to start reading manga I've been waiting for you to read this. I am so happy and excited for you to experience this amazing manga series!
