I have the hideous blue foil gadget and found there are slits at the bottom for the foil to go thru...it helps control it better...see what you think! The Kwik crimp works a lot better if you just put your fingers on the indents at the front and only put that part over the glass, kind of pinching with thumb and index finger. It does great for curves that way because it's not really flat against the glass and you control the pressure! You might try it again like that before you decide about it because it's all I use to burnish (except for pushing down the corners a bit after) and it's great! Not sure if that's how it's intended but that's how I was taught. And always go in the same direction with it so it doesn't tear the foil. I lift up before the end on something like a rectangle so you don't catch it going the other way. Loved seeing everything else tried out. Thank you!!!

I love the grinder cookie - so saves wear an tear on your finger tips and also allows pressure while saving your hands. You can make a version of your own using a good size bottle cap with rubber bands around it.
I am a late night cant sleep shop on line person. I use everything you showed us. Except the quick crimp. I like having the cookie and do use it on some pieces. But you are right. Not necessary. You are spot on about everything.

Since seeing you using the Glastar foiler I have been a fan. I lost the use left hand due to cancer so foiling has been a challenge. This does the trick for me. Yes I have to be satisfied working with only small projects. I enjoy all of your videos. Thank you 🤗

I've been soldering in my back yard to avoid fumes (in the cold and windy weather - which makes for very difficult soldering!) I also love the foil dispenser! Thank you for the reviews! I'm going to find that foil roller and give it a shot! I have the foil dispenser and one thing you didn't notice, but is *really* nice about it is the feed holes near the bottom so you can feed the foil out and keep tension on the foil roll! Super handy and keeps the foil nice and tidy. I also use the shield behind my grinder. I agree it has limited capabilities, but I've also noticed puddles where water has continually splashed while grinding, so it's definitely catching the majority of it. I'd also return that grinder cookie. I use the glastar Gripper Griff to hold small pieces when grinding. It has a nice large handle that is easy to manipulate while grinding. I also use it often when I'm using my grosing pliers to get a more secure hold on the other side of the cut from the pliers. Just give me a more secure grip when mine isn't stable enough. Give it a shot if you find one at toy town!
Definitely!! I foiled about 6 hours yesterday, absolutely loved the roller!! It's fun, and helpful. lol !!! And are you talking about the splitter to hold the foil? If so, I was using it! Or the nut the holds the roll tightly in place? Is there something beyond that? And I've got another video in the works already, in which the gripper and the grinder mate will be featured!! @@MakenzieHallie not the splitter, the ugly blue (I don’t like the color either, but I hadn’t thought about spray painting it, good idea!) foil holder. It has holes in the bottom to feed the foil through, which means the foil stays very neat on the roll and doesn’t spiral off the roll.
Hello Makenzie, I own the Glastar foil dispenser and did not find it particularly helpful at first, I am encouraged to try it again after seeing your review and clamping it to the table for stability idea. I like and have ordered the roller for burnishing and the foil container. Blue is okay but agree, black is better. The smoke absorber I am leery about it because the filter is very, thin and porous. Other filters on other units I've researched are thicker and just seem like they would be more efficient at completely removing the harmful elements in the solder smoke. The fan is indeed powerful, it's the filter I question. O/w great review of bells n whistles, glass tools, thank you!
Totally get the worry, if it wasn't a smoke absorber/carbon filter I would have chose differently! But I love it! I think the foiler is something most people are saying they hated at first too, so your not alone! Thank you for watching!

I made my own splash guard. I bought a tri-fold foam poster board (often used for school projects or presentation) cut it in half since it was so tall so I have 2 for the price of like $2-3
I really liked your review of products. I had considered the foil caddy but was told to always keep foil in a ziplock bag so it doesn’t dry out adhesive.
I have never heard of the adhesive drying out, but the copper oxidizing, absolutely. If your not going through rolls of foil quickly, I wouldn't necessarily suggest you need it either!
You remind me of Jenna Marbles in the sense of your voice tonality and just enjoyment to watch. Your videos are really helpful to people looking at starting up in stained glass like me. Currently sad because I can’t swing buying the grinder yet

Stained glass is not a cheap art form & is getting more and more expensive by the day. Just get yourself some hand grinding stones & really hone in on your cutting stills during this time. Practice, practice, so the grinder is only for foiling, vs correcting design issues, you know what I mean? You can do it!!!
Hey there’s little slots in the bottom of that foil holder to feed the foil through! It didn’t look like you were using it that way but it keeps the foil in way better. I love it! Also, the grinder cookie is definitely meant as a finger saver for those that apply pressure on the side of the glass.. I’m sure your technique is a bit different with such long nails! But I loveeee it. My hands also feel less sore in general since using it, something to consider ♥️
I have and use the grinder cookie. I like it. I tend to save grinding and do it all at once so I'm grinding for hours. It kills my finger tips after an hour or so. Between the glass and the wet my fingers get prune like and more tender. And boy if it hit a sharp and add a cut to the mix... Love my Cookie! Using it to apply the pressure vs. my thumbs is a big win. I also use the quick crimp. It's great for straight pieces. There is a learning curve. The tips are made to squeeze in a bit with thumb and forefinger to apply pressure. This is what makes it work for thick or thinner glass. These tools are only a few dollars, so the fact that I only really use it for straight pieces is ok with me. I struggle with the Glastar foiler. I pull it out now and again to try again but not a fav. They do sell the grinder spash screens that are taller and deeper. I have them on mine - they are like 16" tall and the sides come out about 13". You tried some tools I haven't seen before I may have to check them out. Thanks for the great video!!

I love the fan also! Thank you The Kwik crimp doesn't need to be pressed so hard. I do like the other too. The foil holder has holes in the front bottom to hold the foil straight. I put a piece of construction/painter tape above the hole with the width of the foil in the slot. Where did you get your solder mat?
Don’t like the quick crimp either. Much prefer the roller. The dispenser is very helpful if you are not using a foiled ( either the one you tried or the table fouler).
I have arthritis in my hands and I bought a "table top" foiler. I love it. I foil faster and my hands do not hurt. I am sure you will be pleased. Sucks that you have to clamp it down. Thanks for the tips on the other tools. Adding some on my supply list.
Hi, I have one of the bleu things and I think there are very tiny little slots on the bottom of it where the foil is supposed to pass thru when foling. It took me some time to find out. At the moment I only use it to store my foil roles. Thank you again for this video, your video's are very enjoyable. Als I would like to see some of your work ? Do you have I video where I can see what you make ? I see some other people explained about the foiler as well :-)

Well done again. Interesting insights into those tools. Being a newbie to this myself I will probably use the things I have already gotten before acquiring some of what you have recommended. However, I can see how the the Fume Extractor would be useful for all types of soldering and I might pick that one up soon.
I would say that the fume extractor really is an essential item for soldering. Flux fumes are really really not good for you. So unless you open a window and put a fan to move the fumes out that way, a fume extractor uses carbon filters to filter out the harmful fumes. Definitely pick one up if you can!
Not sure I’d like the cookie either. I did see another artist who keeps the little rubber finger covers (like they use in the office setting for paperwork and whatnot) and she covers her thump and pointer finger when she grinds. I ordered some on Amazon and I like it, I do a lot of teeny pieces in my mosaics and wearing the covers saved my nails.
Does the blue foil holder help with putting foil on evenly or does it just hold the roll? I love your videos and would really like to try some of these. Do you ever use heavy textured glass and if so how do you foil it.
I have a wallpaper seam roller that's similar to your tool, but with a slightly bigger roller. I've used it for wallpapering for years, and I'd never considered it for burnishing foil, but it works great! The foil dispenser might be (even) better if it had a hinged lid, to keep air/sunlight out. As for Mr Splash... I'm sure I could rig up something better with a few scraps of plastic or vinyl - better fitting to the grinder and maybe with a gutter at the bottom to catch the drain-off. Maybe even something that fits directly to the back of the grinder. I'll need to get myself a grinder first, though!
I was FIGHTING that rubber for a long time. I should have left that footage in....quite funny. Lol! And thats awesome! People seem to be split down the middle, either love or don't use the cookie. Really any tools I suppose! Makes us all unique!
If that was just luck, I would NOT be surprised. But then again I had no play in the spacer, so it would have to be even in theory. Either way, still didn't use it foiling all morning the day I uploaded this video lol. Some people have been saying they ABSOLUTELY love the glastar foiler. I just can't get with it yet.....I sure as heck don't have the spare hours to practice foiling on the damn thing either
You want to thread your foil through the slot on the bottom of Foil holder. Easy pull action and very enjoyable foiling experience in my humble opinion!

Wondering if anyone has tried STELLAR CLASSIC 100 GEL FLUX. It is supposed to be “smoke free etc.”. How does it compare to the cheaper novacan? Thanks in advance!:)
I bought a splash guard at the beginning of when I got into stained glass 5 years ago. It’s okay, but I’m thinking about making a box using a clear plastic storage container with a cut out in the front. It will contain glass grind grit better, rather than have to vacuum the whole table when finished.

People are also liquidating small home studios. ‘ ‘All things stained glass’ has good prices to general public online. I just bought Hakko 601-02 Iron on that site. Well worth the $.
You have your foil in wrong on the blue holder. The tape goes downwards and comes out a small slot at the bottom of one of the ends. This will keep it from unraveling and help hold in place while using.
I picked up a slightly different one, it has a variable speed control and 4 extra filters (not one like the link below says). I love the variable speed, I can get really close to the work at low speed, or gun it from farther away. Great video! I am always trying new contraptions too, but one thing I really love is the Glastar Hand Foiler. Such a cool, easy tool 👍🏻

I'm am referring to the one that lays flat on a table. Not the Glastar.

I use a cardboard box, but I covered it with contact paper to keep it waterproof.

Well, it's not quiet....but its not loud. I was able to drown it out quickly watching youtube and working with it yesterday!
I think the cookie would come in handy for newer glass artists, I definitely cut myself a lot in the beginning.
I have a wallpaper seam roller that's similar to your tool, but with a slightly bigger roller. I've used it for wallpapering for years, and I'd never considered it for burnishing foil, but it works great!
The foil dispenser might be (even) better if it had a hinged lid, to keep air/sunlight out.
As for Mr Splash... I'm sure I could rig up something better with a few scraps of plastic or vinyl - better fitting to the grinder and maybe with a gutter at the bottom to catch the drain-off. Maybe even something that fits directly to the back of the grinder. I'll need to get myself a grinder first, though!

The grinder cookie is great when your fingers get sore. I use mine a lot. I didn’t have to put the rubber on, it was already on.
I was FIGHTING that rubber for a long time. I should have left that footage in....quite funny. Lol! And thats awesome! People seem to be split down the middle, either love or don't use the cookie. Really any tools I suppose! Makes us all unique!

If that was just luck, I would NOT be surprised. But then again I had no play in the spacer, so it would have to be even in theory. Either way, still didn't use it foiling all morning the day I uploaded this video lol. Some people have been saying they ABSOLUTELY love the glastar foiler. I just can't get with it yet.....I sure as heck don't have the spare hours to practice foiling on the damn thing either

You want to thread your foil through the slot on the bottom of Foil holder. Easy pull action and very enjoyable foiling experience in my humble opinion!

Never have used the Kwik crimp. Have just placed the Handy Foiler Smooth Roller in my Amazon Box!
I actually have some super thick foil from my dad, I think it's for larger glass for windows? But I'm not sure.

How do you feel about the glastar foiler 1 year later?
I bought a splash guard at the beginning of when I got into stained glass 5 years ago. It’s okay, but I’m thinking about making a box using a clear plastic storage container with a cut out in the front. It will contain glass grind grit better, rather than have to vacuum the whole table when finished.

Ebay is a great place to buy high quality slightly used tools and glass grinders. Lots of people take classes and lose interest. People are also liquidating small home studios. ‘
‘All things stained glass’ has good prices to general public online. I just bought Hakko 601-02 Iron on that site. Well worth the $.

You have your foil in wrong on the blue holder. The tape goes downwards and comes out a small slot at the bottom of one of the ends. This will keep it from unraveling and help hold in place while using.
I use a used 20 gallon fish tank in its side. I put grinder in it and it catches the glass and I can see what I am doing

I picked up a slightly different one, it has a variable speed control and 4 extra filters (not one like the link below says). I love the variable speed, I can get really close to the work at low speed, or gun it from farther away.
