- Here are the two extremes of Kayak Rigging. It doesn't get anymore basic than the first one and sky is the limit on the advanced kayak. Here is how I would rig my kayak for fishing if I were in the tournament world.

This video is what got me started on my kayak fishing journey. I'm absolutely addicted.
Absolutely essential advice on that PFD Gene. Great stuff. Careful with those backwards facing rod holders if you're fishing in tight creeks with overhanging brush. With cheaper holders, even a small line snag can pull those babies up and outta there if they're not secure. Happened to me on my old rig, and one of the only days I went swimmin'. lol Lesson learned.
For me...the purpose of kayak fishing is to be be light and quick for essentially inaccessible waters. The advanced kayak is a nice setup for sure, but I'd be exhausted loading it up, trailering, launching, parking a trailer and the same in reverse at the end of the day. With my Hobie at 74 lbs, it's easily loaded on and off the top of my Jeep. I can get anywhere and be loaded and launched in 15 minutes..., tourney or not, with everything that is essential, no more, no less. By the time you have your rig ready to go as seen, I've cleaned out the lake ! LOL Nice vid.
nicksteroni I agree. I use the bare essentials. Fish really don’t care how big or small. Expensive or cheap your system is.

Anyone watching this with the older heavy power pole not the new he just mentioned, when you are sitting and it’s in its most up position it’s fine. But when you go to stand and you are not anchoring yourself with it lower it a little. Just hitting the down button once makes a ton of difference but if the water is deep enough get it a little lower while you stand and it is super stable...my SS127 is stable anyways and love it.

Great video, I was a kayak guide for a few years and working towards ACA instructor till an injury stopped me. I would also add some more safety gear than just a PFD. Spare paddle or paddle leash, flares and a signaling device. Also I've noticed that no you tuber has ever addressed kayak safety. How to get back into the kayak after a capsize. It is not easy. Sea kayaker Magazine published a book "Deep Trouble" showing kayaker fatal mistakes and how they could have been avoided. Local kayak shops provide basic rescue techniques which any kayaker should take. Thanks Gene

Nice video - However, I would say that the only thing that gets in the way on my Hobie Outback is the paddle! ; ) Love the Mirage 180 drive - No Paddle fishing all day - keeps my hands free to continuously fish. Of course, I have a lot to learn still, I have only owned mine for 3 months. Great tips though! Love seeing what others do to their yaks!
In the IFA Kayak turments you can not use any power moters it has to be manual power only.

Hi Gene, I added even more to my kayak. I added a pvc piping (painted it black) for a roof, that provides some shade, added solar panels, extra rod holders, and added a misting for those hot days using a small pump. The solar keeps my batteries charged.
I think kayaking will become more popular as boat prices hit the stratosphere.
I got a Mustang manual, pfd .. I just put it on when I'm fishing rivers because it dosent cause discomfort..

EXTRA TIP:
I KEEP MARKER BOUEYS IN MY KAYAK BUT NOT FOR FISHING.
I KEEP THEM LOOSE, ONE IN FRONT AND ONE IN BACK IN CASE I ROLL, I KNOW WHERE ALL MY STUFF WENT.
Now I use deeper it’s small compact I can use it for bank and kayak.
You know what I love about the 90% of fishers? They don't care about being flashy they use what works and don't care if it's cheap and don't look down apon people who use the cheap stuff... Its a very accepting sport and can be done for cheap and you don't look stupid cus people don't care your fishing and if it works it's good enough.

I was wondering why your prefer the kettle bells or down rigger weights over the fluke folding anchors? Also, any reason you don't use or won't use an anchor trolley?

Why do you use a kettlebell? I know Yak Attack makes a pretty inexpensive anchor.
I wish I had a net. Yesterday I lost a decent sized fish right at the boat. Gonna have to get one.
What is not mention is in some states you put a motor on you need to register it as a boat depending on where you live
Where I live the DNR told me a motor is a motor regardless what it is . And what ever you have that has a motor on must be done as a boat

Can you provide more detail on how you have your yak attack net attached to your tackle box. I like the sounds of that setup and have both.

Looked like it’s on the right side tracking system and not on the crate. That’s where most put there net mounts are on the tracks.

If you have a motor on it you have to have it registered. Back then this one was under a provision because it was a sponsors boat. Now I own it and it is registered.
Is that SS127 compete with the Big Rig on stability?

@@Flukemaster My 38' fountain didn't even cost $32000 and it has twin supercharged 540's with a pair of merc racing outdrives hanging out back.. You should of shopped around, my jon boat/9.9 cost $600.
I'm calling BS on that one. One Supercharged Chevy 540 runs about 25000. Just the block for one of those is between 5,000 and 6,500

I want to say thank you, after about 15 years i started fishing again. I use to only use live bait. Didn't catch anything. I picked up a rod and tackle from your beginner videos and set up a split shot rig from the "how to catch your first bass" video. Went out this morning and caught 2 :) my first bass on artificial lures. Thank you so much, med heavy 7' rod, 12lb clear line, zoom black trick worm with 1/0 hook, spinner reel (old like 20 years but still works) and a split shot weight. Thank you again for what you do

I agree, don’t skimp on life jackets, one time I was fishing off the Louisiana gulf coast in a bass tracker and I was sitting on the front seat while we were going like 40 mph, and we hit something underwater. The boat went from like 40-0 mph in like one second and I was launched into the water so fast, and it took me a good bit of time to resurface even though I was wearing a life jacket. I was also wearing boots at the time. So word of advice, wear a life jacket, don’t sit in the front of the boat while going fast, and probably don’t wear boots.
Someone isn’t framing the shot right. It would have been nice to actually see how he had the net mounted, rather than plenty of trees above his head. 🙄

Cool video, but that Yak must weigh a ton. Between that gigantic fish finder and the battery and tolling motor. If you need to put all that on a trailer, I find it pointless to use a kayak like that and you are better off getting a jon boat fully rigged for fishing. I just don't get it. Just my 2 cents.

No mater what you spend on setting up a fishing kayak it’s a fraction of what tournament bass boats cost. In fact you can have a couple of kayaks setup for way less (nice to have a 2nd for your buddy/kid/wife when they want to tag along)

I'm am extremely proficient swimmer, and I ALWAYS wear one, I always think that's when shit happens is when you're too comfortable with something and say ahhhh, I won't take that, haven't needed it, and bang, that's when you NEED it

Stress the pfd in every video. I saw a guy in a Jon boat go overboard and never came up. I believe he got caught up in his anchor rope.

Lmao been kayaking for almost 20 years and have never needed 90 % of that crap! Milk crate couple rods small cooler and little anchor good to go! Way to turn a 1000 dollar plastic kayak into a wanna be bass boat. Probably 10k into it? Lmao Defeats the whole purpose! Smh OH and your high af if you think you need to spend over 100$ for a decent paddle! Had the same no limits paddle for close to 10yrs. used in lakes, rivers, inshore offshore no problem ever. Paid like 40$ for it.. But hey you do you boo.. 😉

I bought a very used kayak that had been sitting outside for a while. I have
Tie down points, a crate bungeed in, home made rod securement device, bought a new seat for $50, a net, flashlight, water proof container for phone, and a stopping stick I made at work.
It is a couple hundred dollar endeavor which brings me a bit of joy. You can do fishing or leisure runs with very little in the way of bling.
I love fishing. My kayak allows me access to spots I otherwise couldn't fish.
You don't have to spend the kind of money you see here.

I'm not sure if you will see this comment since the video is old. However, how does the anchor in the front work without a anchor trolly? How do you get the position you want?
I don't worry too much about perfect anchor points. I have my power pole anchor in the back so I can fish down current or down wind and a front anchor to do the opposite.
I have this feeling that this boat is over 15k.....

I do all my fishing from a kayak, and would love to see some more videos on you fishing in yours: tactics, techniques, i feel like its all different when you're sitting down in a kayak as far as where your line is and the head of your pole. Since you put a price point on everything, what your saying is if you don't have expensive stuff then guys like me with my $300 yak, $30 PFD $40 paddle $100 fish finder and rod holders up front(which I don't use while I'm paddling, DUH) are just wasting our time? Silly me all this time I thought I was actually enjoying fishing with my simple cheap stuff. From now on I'm putting all my money into a kayak, first I will go pay a couple hundred for a paddle that is 1/2 an ounce lighter, more shiny and most important has a fancy brand name on it somewhere.I have been foolishly using my money to pay bills and supporting my family.

@@Flukemaster The point seems to be a $50 PFD wont float as good as a $100 or if your paddle didn't cost at least $100 then its practically useless. and that you have to spend vast amounts of money or you're wasting your time. High prices does not necessarily equate to high quality. Most of the time all your extra money gets you is a name brand that was built in the same factory in Red China as the lesser priced stuff. Is it about fishing and getting out on the water end appreciating gods creations or how much money you can spend?

What size paddle are you using ? Is that a Bending Branches Angler Pro ? I just purchased a 127 and plan on using the seat in the high position. I am also 6’ 4”. Curious on the length and trying to stay fairly dry. Thanks !
