I want to say thank you, after about 15 years i started fishing again. I use to only use live bait. Didn't catch anything. I picked up a rod and tackle from your beginner videos and set up a split shot rig from the "how to catch your first bass" video. Went out this morning and caught 2 :) my first bass on artificial lures. Thank you so much, med heavy 7' rod, 12lb clear line, zoom black trick worm with 1/0 hook, spinner reel (old like 20 years but still works) and a split shot weight. Thank you again for what you do
For me...the purpose of kayak fishing is to be be light and quick for essentially inaccessible waters. The advanced kayak is a nice setup for sure, but I'd be exhausted loading it up, trailering, launching, parking a trailer and the same in reverse at the end of the day. With my Hobie at 74 lbs, it's easily loaded on and off the top of my Jeep. I can get anywhere and be loaded and launched in 15 minutes..., tourney or not, with everything that is essential, no more, no less. By the time you have your rig ready to go as seen, I've cleaned out the lake ! LOL Nice vid.
Absolutely essential advice on that PFD Gene. Great stuff. Careful with those backwards facing rod holders if you're fishing in tight creeks with overhanging brush. With cheaper holders, even a small line snag can pull those babies up and outta there if they're not secure. Happened to me on my old rig, and one of the only days I went swimmin'. lol Lesson learned.
Good info. You described how all these add-on equipment help. You also stressed the importance of not cluttering the cockpit and the importance of a PFD!
Great video! Love how you started it up with PFD. I flipped my yak last year and I thank God I had my pfd. Cause of people like you expressing the importance of one. Very nice Kayak yak by the way.
I'm am extremely proficient swimmer, and I ALWAYS wear one, I always think that's when shit happens is when you're too comfortable with something and say ahhhh, I won't take that, haven't needed it, and bang, that's when you NEED it
I agree, don’t skimp on life jackets, one time I was fishing off the Louisiana gulf coast in a bass tracker and I was sitting on the front seat while we were going like 40 mph, and we hit something underwater. The boat went from like 40-0 mph in like one second and I was launched into the water so fast, and it took me a good bit of time to resurface even though I was wearing a life jacket. I was also wearing boots at the time. So word of advice, wear a life jacket, don’t sit in the front of the boat while going fast, and probably don’t wear boots.
Awesome. I just got into kayak fishing and noticed right away that I didn’t want everything up front. I sat in my garage in the kayak a few times before I decided that. Lol thanks for another great tip and tutorial video.
Great video, I was a kayak guide for a few years and working towards ACA instructor till an injury stopped me. I would also add some more safety gear than just a PFD. Spare paddle or paddle leash, flares and a signaling device. Also I've noticed that no you tuber has ever addressed kayak safety. How to get back into the kayak after a capsize. It is not easy. Sea kayaker Magazine published a book "Deep Trouble" showing kayaker fatal mistakes and how they could have been avoided. Local kayak shops provide basic rescue techniques which any kayaker should take. Thanks Gene
Nice setup . Been thinking about a Micro Anchor for my Jackson but know that I`m Disable my money is a little funny . but I will get me one . Thanks for the information .
Jean, I thanks for your videos! I do all my fishing from a kayak, and would love to see some more videos on you fishing in yours: tactics, techniques, i feel like its all different when you're sitting down in a kayak as far as where your line is and the head of your pole. Just little things like these would be awesome man. Thanks for everything!
I love my Hobie Pro Angler 17T Tandem Kayak, (I only use it by myself and i love having lot of extra space for my gear) My most favorite thing about it is that i have a trolling motor that goes in place of the flipper pedals and then i have a paddle to get to shore, haha I did kinda cheap out on the paddle as well, I will definitely look into a much better paddle I really love your kayak and setup
Just recently subscribed and am going camping with my friends and girlfriend. Camping spot is right next to a reservoir!!! Gonna catch some trout and watching your videos is getting super amped for the trip this weekend!!!!
Looks badass, and I might try one someday, but I am still a canoe guy. I have a SportsPal 14' set up nearly identical to KeepinItReelFishing, and, IMO, it is infinitely more versatile. It's lighter, can carry more stuff, all of that stuff is in FRONT of me so I don't have to teeter around behind me to get what I need (6' / 250#), can carry extra (and larger) batteries for the motor, still has a very shallow draft for getting into the skinny stuff, and the biggest one... if the son, wife, or friend wants to come along, not a problem. Not criticizing, just another man's opinions & what works for me. Keep up the great work... love the channel & info!!
Anyone watching this with the older heavy power pole not the new he just mentioned, when you are sitting and it’s in its most up position it’s fine. But when you go to stand and you are not anchoring yourself with it lower it a little. Just hitting the down button once makes a ton of difference but if the water is deep enough get it a little lower while you stand and it is super stable...my SS127 is stable anyways and love it.
Nice video - However, I would say that the only thing that gets in the way on my Hobie Outback is the paddle! ; ) Love the Mirage 180 drive - No Paddle fishing all day - keeps my hands free to continuously fish. Of course, I have a lot to learn still, I have only owned mine for 3 months. Great tips though! Love seeing what others do to their yaks!
Hi Gene, I added even more to my kayak. I added a pvc piping (painted it black) for a roof, that provides some shade, added solar panels, extra rod holders, and added a misting for those hot days using a small pump. The solar keeps my batteries charged. I think kayaking will become more popular as boat prices hit the stratosphere.
Can’t imagine how much that thing weighs! Also can’t understand the need for more than 2 rods personally! Appreciate the effort you’ve gone to to mod it though! 👍
Great vid Gene. If you have the money, go big. I think an important point to keep in mind for everyone that watched this, is that you don't need a whole bunch of gear to be successful out there! -Eddie
Great video Gene! I love these videos on kayak fishing and gear setups. I just had one suggestion to help make these videos better... the camera was on your face pretty much the whole time and when you talk about some of the gear, you can't really see what you are pointing at or where it's located on your yak. I would rather see the gear on camera and listen to what you are talking about. Hope this helps.
Some extremely good information...the PFD is something i have actually been wondering about..I know something good but I appreciate the attention to the importance..I appreciate it...some good and helpful information..
Excellent video Gene! You said everything I needed to hear cause this applies to me right now. I've been struggling with trying to figure out how to rig up for a trip. Thanks for the insight as always and I will definately follow your advice starting today.
No mater what you spend on setting up a fishing kayak it’s a fraction of what tournament bass boats cost. In fact you can have a couple of kayaks setup for way less (nice to have a 2nd for your buddy/kid/wife when they want to tag along)
I'm not sure if you will see this comment since the video is old. However, how does the anchor in the front work without a anchor trolly? How do you get the position you want?
I don't worry too much about perfect anchor points. I have my power pole anchor in the back so I can fish down current or down wind and a front anchor to do the opposite.
I hope you respond to this because I love that anchor winch you have on your kayak and I didn't hear you mention a brand or anything, but where can I get one of those or something similar because that's amazing
Love the vids but I'd like to see you big guys on the water turning around and accessing your tackle in your crate. I'm sure you have a way to do it without ending up in the water.
Just ran across your channel -- Thank You Thank You Thank You! Great advice for sure. The gentleman down below talking about safety and getting back on the kayak if your off -- I would tell everyone to check out Kayak Hacks Fishing he has about 4-5 videos on that subject. But Thanks again Flukemaster
I couldn't agree more. I have a similar PFD to you. I always wear it. I see so many people on TH-cam not wearing them, and even some idiots wearing waders in a kayak. The quickest way to die.
How about a video on how you mounted the torqeedo on the bonefide! I really want to get a bonefide but just wish they made a pedal drive, so might get a Coosa fd.
So true on rod holders up front. Ive many a time got going to hard paddling and grabbed to far got pinned up on rod holder with paddle and it stops you almost throws you
You may never see this lol but just an idea I thought of never seen it. What if you put like slide rails on the side and put rod holders on it and modify it to where when you slide it where you want it you can lock it in place. Then you can have it rodholders up beside you if you want or slide them back when paddling
Vinos Finos Tapas and Wine Bar Looked like it’s on the right side tracking system and not on the crate. That’s where most put there net mounts are on the tracks.
I just wanted to say thank you for all your great videos. My son and I started kayak fishing this year and have been watching a lot of your videos to help us get going. I wish I would have been fishing before I started kayaking lol, I bought a pungo 120, my first few trips out fishing looked like a 3 stooges bit lol. I've gotten way better but I did put a deposit down on a fishing kayak with pedal drive, heck of a deal on a demo model, but then this whole covid thing happened, so it will have to wait to pay off. But I rigged my pungo up so I can fish fairly well. Biggest issue is in any wind or having to adjust location with your line out. Thanks for another great video!
Just bought myself a Pelican catch 120, love this thing but looking to install a motor on it most likely not till this winter, I don't like to be wore down by the time I get to where I'm going to fish smaller lake it good larger lake little to much work what motor do you recommend I was thinking use one of my old motors
Great vid but I have a question. Why would that kayak not be for a beginner? I want to get into kayak fishing.( I fish from a 12ft Jon boat at the moment) I want a kayak I won’t flip easily
Hey Fluke, love your channel, I have a 2019 out back’ what’s your advice ? either invest in a torqeedo’ or a Motor guide with spot lock’ only problem with that is, only option is to mount it on the back’ and it’s heavy’ what would you do ?
Great Video! I'm planning to start fishing KBF tourneys next year. Do you use down scan or side scan? Is it worth it on a kayak? Keep the videos coming we really enjoy them!

What size paddle are you using ? Is that a Bending Branches Angler Pro ? I just purchased a 127 and plan on using the seat in the high position. I am also 6’ 4”. Curious on the length and trying to stay fairly dry. Thanks !
Hey Gene, another great video, short and sweet. I bought a used Big Rig as my first yak because I wanted to be able to stand. I remember your videos in the BR. How would you say they compare to your current yak? (Speed, stability and standability). Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!
You will probably get as many different suggestions as there are kayak companies out there. That said, make sure you go with a rotomolded kayak, the cheaper style will puncture on rocks and other obstacles and you will waste money and time repairing or replacing them. Otherwise, you will have to balance speed, stability, and your budget. If there are any kayak rental places, go take a test ride in a few. Having had a Wilderness Systems and now own a Vibe Shearwater 125, I can attest to their quality and would recommend either brand.
I want to say thank you, after about 15 years i started fishing again. I use to only use live bait. Didn't catch anything. "Honey i shrunk my Tracker bass boat"
this is the best comment ever oml
Someone that actually gets how kayak rigging works. even on the advanced end
God bless you!
I 110% agree with your over rigging statement
Love that you pushed the PFD so much!
I'm am extremely proficient swimmer, and I ALWAYS wear one, I always think that's when shit happens is when you're too comfortable with something and say ahhhh, I won't take that, haven't needed it, and bang, that's when you NEED it

Good video and yes try to keep it as simple as possible and out-of-the-way
Thank you for stressing the importance of a PFD. It's not talked about enough. Saves lives.
Great vid Gene. If you have the money, go big.
I think an important point to keep in mind for everyone that watched this, is that you don't need a whole bunch of gear to be successful out there!

That’s what I was hoping to convey.
Keep the kayak videos coming brother! Love Them!
Thanks for the great explanations as to why you've located items where you did. Makes total sense! Keep it simple. Bring what you need.
Wow, I never thought to use the new Omega rod holders for horizontals in the back. Will definitely use
Perfect video!!! Could you do one on what kayak you should buy!
great video, buying a Torqeedo AC this Spring...
Thinking about selling my boat and getting a kayak. Great tips
Don't you will regret that
Hi! Did you end up selling the boat? Would you recommend it?
@@tinareimer7726 I did sell the boat and bought a kayak. Yes I do regret it. Good news is my wife says she wants a bigger boat. Win win for me

It's called the Anchor Wizard. They have a website
@@Flukemaster thank you so much I appreciate it!

Another great video. You truly have a sweet setup for a kayak. Keep the videos coming
I love the ss127. I'm hoping to get all those bells and whistles on my yak
What kind of PDF are you using, it looks like it is very comfortable
I wish I had a net. Yesterday I lost a decent sized fish right at the boat. Gonna have to get one.
What kind of fish finder is that? Or what is a good one for a kayak for an advanced set up that is "relatively" cost effective
Hi Gene, do you use any rod leashes or floats to protect your gear in the event of a capsize? Love the channel, I blame my tackle addiction on you!
In the IFA Kayak turments you can not use any power moters it has to be manual power only.
The USCGAUX supports your PFD enthusiasm!!
You may never see this lol but just an idea I thought of never seen it. What if you put like slide rails on the side and put rod holders on it and modify it to where when you slide it where you want it you can lock it in place. Then you can have it rodholders up beside you if you want or slide them back when paddling
its riddler seen one had golf club plastic tubes mounted to the front cover.
Can you provide more detail on how you have your yak attack net attached to your tackle box. I like the sounds of that setup and have both.
Vinos Finos Tapas and Wine Bar
Looked like it’s on the right side tracking system and not on the crate. That’s where most put there net mounts are on the tracks.
What is not mention is in some states you put a motor on you need to register it as a boat depending on where you live
Where I live the DNR told me a motor is a motor regardless what it is . And what ever you have that has a motor on must be done as a boat
Yup. Applies to Louisiana also
For a beginner set up, would you recommend purchasing a rudder or a fish-finder first?
I just wanted to say thank you for all your great videos. My son and I started kayak fishing this year and have been watching a lot of your videos to help us get going. I was wondering why your prefer the kettle bells or down rigger weights over the fluke folding anchors? Also, any reason you don't use or won't use an anchor trolley?
Great tips for the starter or the advanced angler. Good deal and nice breakdown.
Why do you use a kettlebell? I know Yak Attack makes a pretty inexpensive anchor.
Thanks for the video! What kind of electronics would you recommend? I'm thinking of something with side imaging.. garmin or humminbird.. but dont want to break the bank either. Any thoughts?
I wish I would have been fishing before I started kayaking lol, I bought a pungo 120, my first few trips out fishing looked like a 3 stooges bit lol. I've gotten way better but I did put a deposit down on a fishing kayak with pedal drive, heck of a deal on a demo model, but then this whole covid thing happened, so it will have to wait to pay off. But I rigged my pungo up so I can fish fairly well. Biggest issue is in any wind or having to adjust location with your line out. Thanks for another great video!
how do you turn around to get into your tackle and rods behind you. I am not seeing it?
Gene, what kind of kayak trailer is in the video?
Also Gene any suggestions on what would be an all around good kayak for lakes, and maybe some offshore fishing?
XxJalelxX I know Nu canoe makes great offshore kayaks I have the flint and I love it but I know bonefied makes great ones too
TH-cam algorithm still putting MTB ads on your videos...blah. Anyway, nice vid Gene, looking forward to the offshore kayak tutorial !
Loving your videos.. I’m looking to buy my first kayak and your videos are very informative.. curious as to where you’d recommend buying one?
Get it from an actual paddle shop. They will let you demo as many as you want in order to make an informed buy.

Gene, do kayaks go fast enough to properly display Side scan or DI? Just wondering. Looking to get into kayak fishing soon.
That kayak is awesome! love your videos man!
Wish I could buy a trailer like yours, but no dealers in montana.
Thanks for sharing safely first. Subbed!

You will probably get as many different suggestions as there are kayak companies out there. That said, make sure you go with a rotomolded kayak, the cheaper style will puncture on rocks and other obstacles and you will waste money and time repairing or replacing them.
