    Thanks for the video I have a 2005 Spectra 5. I was able to get better access by removing the air cleaner and air box (three 12mm bolts and one 10mm bolt. It took 2 minutes and then I was able to do the replace the thermostat without unhooking the wires or the radiator hose. Just thought I would pass that on. Thanks again for taking the time to post the video.

    Thank you for the video. I actually removed the air intake box(four bolts) prior to removing the thermostat housing. Had a lot of space to work and maneuver. Reason I searched for this video was because i did not know where the thermostat was. I got tons of great info out if this. Thank you. Took me 30 min and a beer. No hassle...

      I agree! The air filter box is an easy removal and great way to gain so much more access. I have large hands and it is always a challenge getting into those tight spaces. I as well did not know where the thermostat was, it's my son's girlfriends car. This is a really great video to show where everything is....... including where the "washer" is! :)

    if you would skipped taking off the engine cover and loose the clamp on the hose to the airbox and remove two bolts, you would have had clear access to the thermostat housing,

    If you push in on that wire clip it releases the connection that's how that style works

    Is there a bleeder valve on this engine for the coolant in case of air pockets? Or would a simple incline method work?

    i have same question where does the metal gasket go...and where does the paper gasket go???? Engine,metalgasket,thermostat,papergasket,pipe??? cause on an 06 the thermostat cant sit in place without the metal gasket...

    Lol If you would have just took out the air filter box it would have been a lot easier to get to all of that without having to unplug does tree wires .

    Does the thermostat attach to the hose coming from the top of the radiator or from the bottom of an 2006 kia Optima?

    Thanks for this! Very informative. I'm having to do this now myself. Now I know what to look out for.
    Question, I see a scuffed up area on your radiator top near the hose. Is that from a patch job? If so, did it work well? If not, no worries.

    • @lrnselfreliance
      @lrnselfreliance  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, thats a patch. It actually worked quite well. It bubbles a tiny bit, but I've never had it overheat.

    • @jkenlive
      @jkenlive 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Learning Self-Reliance Ah cool! I did try a similar patch (same area) with mine but the crack is almost 3 inches wide. Ordered a new radiator from Amazon. Maybe I'll try it again before it arrives and have a spare... Thanks again.

    • @lrnselfreliance

      +jkenlive I used in weld, I ruffed up the area with sandpaper first, and really worked the putty in.

  • @jackslater230011
    @jackslater230011 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I felt the hose leading to the thermostat housing on my 2004 Kia Spectra and it was ice cold while the top hose was hot and the engine was starting to overheat. The temp gauge got to the halfway mark just from idling. Would that be a bad thermostat or a bad water pump? Or both?
    I've already ordered a brand new thermostat from Kia. The Duralast ones suck and don't last long at all.

    • @lrnselfreliance
      @lrnselfreliance  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jackslater230011 I'm only an amateur mechanic, but I'd start with replacing the thermostat. If that doesn't fix it, then you could try a water pump. Good luck!

    when my dad took off the houseing there was a metal gasket that came off with the thermostat. does that piece ever go back on? you never showed that part.

    • @lrnselfreliance
      @lrnselfreliance  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about, just make sure to use a gasket. It should be connected in this order: engine, thermostat, gasket, metal pipe.

    Code didn't go away, drived it a week. Car warms up normally now, no more issues except code still there. Do I reset the ECU computer or unplug the negative battery terminal? Please help, thank you.

    Why did you replace the thermostat? The reason I asked, my 2005 Kia Spectra won't heat up when I start it in the morning and it's idling for 15-20 minutes before I take off, but when I take off and travel for maybe 3-4 miles it begins to heat up. By the way nice video man.......

    • @marked4death076
      @marked4death076 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The coolent in engine is cool enough in morning to stay at decent temp is my guess, once you start putting pressure on it and it cant circulate it becomes an issue.

    This is funny, I came here looking for what pipe the thermostat was in, thank goodness it's in that outside one. the whole mess in there is CRAP , funny thing is, besides the bat man gloves, you have all the same tools i use for this same shit. sept i think thats a leatherman and I carry a Gerber but your lights the same. even the same wear, you should get a strip of gorilla duct tape and put it around UNDER the clip all the around on the stream light man, the clip costs ten freaking dollars if it comes off and that tape will hold it there forever. mine came off on my pocket. i keep it on top, hangs inside my pocket with the clip outside right beside my flip knife and extend-able magnet. LOL the clip popped off and i didn't notice. the lights damn near useless to me without the clip and i use it probably 10 times a day.
    anyway. I am back at it now. thanks for the great video. oh if you like the usb streamlight that you have there, and you use head lamps. Coast model HL7 is the BEST i have ever found. It;s awesome, its not USB rechargeable though, that would be bad ass, so i just got some rechargeable lithium ion AAA's for mine. 2 sets so i don't ever have to wait.

    i just did this 6 months ago and i have check engine light on. autozone says it the thermostat, really starting to irritate me . haven't ever seen a thermostat go bad in that short of time, probably 600 to 1000 miles or so is all it;s gone. i wonder if there can be a false reading form thing else.

      @Slumericannandit83 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just take the top engine cover off but leave the hose on You can still get in there and get it off it'll save you some time I do recommend to changing the hose if it hadn't been changed and there's a little elbow hose underneath it while you're in there I recommend changing that that little elbow hose is small but it is a son of a bitch to change lol I wish I had did that when I did the thermostat eventually it'll dry right and go bad and you'll get a leak@@marked4death076
