PSA for everyone who may not know: You do not have to answer a question just because a cop asks you! It isn't illegal to not answer their questions and do NOT under any circumstances give them consent to search your bag or your phone. If they ask for your pass code you do not have to give it to them. They get away with this stuff because people assume you have to do everything they say. Ask if you are being detained or if you are free to go. Verbalize that you are *not* giving consent for a search. Even if you *are* being arrested you *still* don't need to answer any questions without a lawyer. Even if you think "well I don't have anything to hide" still don't. When they say anything you say can be used against you, they MEAN THAT.
