      Even then... you can build some prototypes and play with them at groom lake, and possibly keep the circle of people as small as 5000 or so.
      But when you go to large scale production, that would grow to about 50,000 in the production line, plus dozens of subcontractors, and then tens of thousands of military personnel who'll receive production units, maintenance depots, janitors, people who simply live across the street from air force bases. You rapidly go from 5000 people which you can realistically keep high-clearance, to 150,000 people which you can't possibly keep high clearance.

      Not exactly.. it's even worse that way in fact.. you only encourage your adversaries to work harder than you to beat you ..And it ALWAYS works for your adversary... The USSR lived everyday with the assumption of military inferiority to the West in the initial years of the cold war and they found out much later that their tanks were superior to early western designs..the T62 , 64 and 72 all introduced armor tech with composite filling and ERA wedged in the armour capable of stopping Western HEAT rounds head on from the front whilst Western tanks were just thick steel that Soviet tank guns melted through.. That was the result of over hyping your tech to your enemy. Your enemy leapfrogs you by decades. Had a large scale conventional war been fought between the USSR and NATO, T72s were going to slaughter Leopard 1s, M60s, Chieftains etc.....
      I can give other examples... What you describe happens a lot... It's usually done by clueless politicians. The people that actually work with the hardware never over hype it. F22 and F35 pilots don't believe they're invisible and invincible in their jets... They exercise caution and adhere to training strictly.. The over hyping will be done by an idiot president who knows nothing about the machine..

    And especially in regards to performance, there's lots of people capable of doing very sophisticated guesstimates, which together with leaks and actual footage, tends to get you a LOT of reasonably reliable information.
    Never forget what happened back in the 80s. When a computer game company created a game for the F-117, and this caused the US security services to kneejerk react, because their simulation almost perfectly nailed down the performance of the plane.
    And yet there was zero espionage or even leaks. The company simply hired a veteran pilot with a degree in aeronautic engineering and an aerodynamics expert. And then they looked at the by then almost nonexistant information that existed about the plane, and GUESSED.
    And again, they literally nailed it within low single-digit percentages in every way.
    This was just a game company just hiring the first 2 experts on the subject they could find.

  • @kathrynck
    @kathrynck 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

    Well, there are an abnormally large amount of "black projects" in the US.
    And some of them have prototyping, or technology exploration vehicles.
    But any procurement of significant scale, pretty much has to be public. Going from prototyping to production, and then deployment, maintenance, etc. Just increases the number of personnel involved exponentially, as well as making at least a visual look at the hardware impossible to avoid. On top of that, any major production involves such expense that it outreaches the funds of black projects. The USAF would _LOVE_ to keep something like the B-21 secret. But they need a few hundred billion dollars to buy them, which means they gotta hold out the tips jar to congress, and congress is about as airtight as a spaghetti strainer.
    There _are_ secret "capabilities" though. Either in the form of completely unmentioned functionality, or in the form of misrepresented performance metrics, or in the form of deliberately obfuscated purposes/methods, etc. Sometimes the timeline of deployment is publicly inaccurate as well. Deploying systems or "versions" before the publicly listed deployment dates. Once in a while, the other way around. There are even items which are made public, but then downplayed as being very minor and unimportant while procured (openly), when nothing could be further from the truth (for example "skeet" munitions).
    The most glaring exception was the F-117A. Of which 64 were manufactured in secret. That's the record holder, numerically. Those were made without a proper production line, more or less by hand, and about 50% from off the shelf parts. They may not even have complete parts interchangeability, due to their "handmade" production (one might have 2 panels where another has one larger panel, etc). There are many secret prototypes over the years. And a few other secret production/procurements, but none as numerous as the F-117. And the only reason the F-117 was as numerous as it was, is that it's actually a relatively low-tech aircraft. Apart from it's shape and coating, the rest of it's components are more akin to an A-10 in tech level. That made it somewhat easier to build a limited number of them in secret. They were made because it was believed, at that time, that a small number of secret-asset ground-attack stealth aircraft could have a disproportionately large impact in a major conflict. And they became public knowledge as soon as the were destined to be deployed to desert storm, where they would become much more visible to wandering eyes. But truly, the F-117A is an outlier. If they had cost more than $60m per unit (and most super-secret items do), they couldn't have made 64 of them quietly at groom lake.
    There were some operational aircraft which hid in the publicly-visible shadow of the SR-71, and looked extremely similar, but not a great many, and they ultimately ended up becoming cannibalized for parts for the SR-71. There's a few other examples, but there aren't any "fully secret aircraft" in any significant numbers. Building 64 F-117A's in secret was very much an anomaly.

    • @christophmahler
      @christophmahler 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      We have historic examples: _the bomb_ of the Manhattan project that was not secret to the Soviets and produced only in few numbers before being proliferated, and the F-117A, You mentioned which was revealed shortly before it's first mission - which like all aircraft was only devastating if armed nuclear (still one of the best - or possibly - 'peak procurement' programs in the US, considering technological concept and execution - all without spending billions of USD).

      @kathrynck 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@christophmahler The F-12 really drove home the difficulty (expense) of an entirely secret deployment in the early 1960's. And even then, would have been impossible without a recon version which looked almost identical, to eliminate the risk of visual exposure. I can't think of much which actually went "operational" (even in very limited numbers) between that and the F-117A. Although, it's a bit simpler with anything nuclear, as you need a lot of high clearance personnel around that no matter what, it's kind of an unavoidably included expense for nuclear items.

      @@christophmahler Well, 'officially' anyway.
      Unofficially, about 20 YF-12's, but with the SR-style forward chine shape, were found by accident in a hangar in the 1980's. To be fair, from the photo, some of them might have been SR's. Only a few are clearly visible, the rest is just a tailfin count. All seemed to be in a partially cannibalized condition (parts for the SR's no doubt). These would all be outside of "official" airframes, which isn't hard to figure out given how few archangel aircraft were "officially" built. It was photographed, and published. But was subsequently ghosted/scrubbed.
      Basically new base commander wanted to refurbish a large unused hangar, cut the padlock and got a surprise. And the people involved didn't have any real security training or any debriefing on what to say or not say, so 'stuff happened'. I do think taking a pic for the local paper was perhaps overtly silly though.
      With partial disassembly, there was a really good look at the RAM geometry inside the wing perimeter too. Which in the 1980's would have been somewhat sensitive info. But not outside of the range of things you could read about in "future fighters" type literature then.
      I find it incredibly unlikely that it went unnoticed by near peers though. Compromised is compromised. And the tech is 1950's vintage, and there aren't any archangels still in service in over 2 decades now, so... it's kinda hard to think of it as a state secret.
      I only bring it up as an example that you can have "a few" "operational" assets which remain under the black projects umbrella. But it's very expensive and very hard to do. The F-117A's were made in a considerably larger quantity though. And didn't enjoy the "easy deniability" of looking extremely similar to a publicly known aircraft.
      I guess another example (not of an aircraft though) might be the AIM-174B. It went public recently, but interestingly it's status was "already in service" at the time when it went public.
      There's "a bit" of secret planes (and such) in the US, historically. But broadly speaking, I agree with M7's overall point. The black projects umbrella only stretches so far.
      Now "secret prototypes", gees, there's a lot of that. ;)

      ALL of the manufacturers want to over-claim.
      In Russia, they largely allow this, as it makes a nice feather in their hat in projecting "implied' military strength in the international political scene. But to be fair, over-stating capabilies is a valid approach to misdirection. It's over-used in Russia, but it has it's uses.
      In the US... the DoD forbids it ...FOR any really potent and important item. If it's a really important system, they want things grossly under-stated. Meanwhile, the DoD doesn't care if manufacturers brag about lower-tech lesser items. Ironically, this leads many americans to believe that their worst hardware is their best hardware, and vice versa. Which is a form of misdirection. Once in a while it comes back to haunt the DoD though, for example, when they _want_ to retire an obsolete plane with a big gun, but congress won't let them because of the inverse-hype they've allowed to proliferate.

      Lasers are useless as weapons, due to Earth curvature and severe degradation of the beam in Earth atmosphere, and if you add in the equation the huge amounts of energy necessary to maintain a high rate of fire and high power, and relatively cheap ways to counter and defend against, is obvious not a great weapon at least, not now or in the near future, except to burn small and slow drones - and even there a ww2 era old AA gun outperform them !
      And do not even mention the RailGunCrap ! Rail Guns were exposed as the most stupid and biggest blunder of US DoD, once exposed are inferior to missiles on all aspects ( warhead, range, manoeuvrability, accuracy, RoF, etc).

      @@JoelKleppinger
      "It's pretty obvious that data communication in the hypersonic envelope is a solved problem."
      I'm not a physicist, so I can't present the math (see e.g. the article 'The Physics and Hype of Hypersonic Weapons' by the Scientific American Magazine in 2021 - EDIT: see also the 'Hypersonic Systems Initiative' at the University of Notre Dame which addresses the physics of radio communication through ionized plasma) - but in orbit there is no atmospheric drag that creates high temperatures, and there is clear sight to thousands of STARLINK satellites.
      The SR-71 didn't fly that high (100 km as the arguably lower boundary of space), against which operation a main argument was the very advance of satellite sensors and communication.
      Take satellites away in a major war and the reason why there was advocacy at all to reactivate the SR-71 in the 1990s becomes evident (see the respective Congress debates).
      All broadband data-links - like that of the JSF are subsonic/trans-sonic - explaining why to hold on to the JSF, instead of just shooting a network of supersonic unmanned drones over contested airspace, when needed.
      So, apologies if my mastering of physics is elementary at best (thus listening to this channel e.g. when it comes to aerodynamics), but in my impression from discourse in literature, the differences between atmospheric and orbital flight is crucial when it comes to the technical challenges of hypersonic aircraft (including missiles).
      EDIT: to the very contrary of Your statement, I would go as far as claiming that the entire SpaceX set up - including the flimsy ARTEMIS program and the exploration of Mars blablabla is merely a front for the military capability of orbital reconnaissance in the moment of satellite losses (out-sourced from federal NASA) - explaining as well the seemingly close political networking (involvement in US foreign policy operations in Ukraine).

That was the presumptive designation for the rumored "stealth fighter", which turned out to be the F-117, which was a pretty big program (59 airframes), and already operational by the time it was publicly revealed. If I recall correctly, it was to be a "silver bullet" that could penetrate Soviet air defenses and take out critical targets. So it was a "secret weapon" for only a little while, because it simply became impractical to constrain training flights to nighttime only.
