That relationship with a supervisor is a MAJOR factor and is the main reason I got my PhD. Applied for a few in January through a programme and spoke to the supervisor of a project I was most interested in. I didn't get an interview but still emailed him to thank him for the advice and consideration.
He ended up offering me an interview for a PhD title he, himself, was shortlisting for. Despite having missed the deadline for applications by a week, he gave me an interview and after two days of interviewing called me to offer me a spot. Due to start next month and can't wait

for all those finding this comment now - its been just over 3 years since getting the offer - still got another 15 months until submission. Do also be careful about the supervisors haha. Whilst I am happy to have been given this PhD and working on it with so many other people, the supervision has been very iffy at times. Goes to show that relationships can change before and after a PhD so always be sure you are fully comfortable and confident to pursue a big commitment!

Can you speak more on building a relationship with people at desired institutions? How much contact is too much? When is good timing to contact folks? Email, phone convo? Just the specific faculty member or also admissions folks or dept. head?

How about a video on how to write your own reference letters? That's a key part to applications as well.
Be it grad school or scholarship, all my former supervisors would ask me to draft a reference letter myself and let them sign it. And it feels really awkward imagining how my supervisors would view/praise me and let them read it... Though they'd probably just sign it without reading.

And how not to feel awkward if you need to ask your supervisor to write you a dozen references for a dozen scholarship applications...

For the university I want to apply to .I have to first write out to potential supervisors or professors. My motivation letter is ready. It has taken me a year to prepare

Thank you so much for this. Always appreciate the very clear and detailed explanation. If possible can you also talk about how you can secure a scholarship along with the application?

Not a problem as such, but expect to have to go in great detail what you have done in the 10 years since your masters.

Hello Andy. There is a really low possibility you read this comment and answer my question but am gonna try it.
I am an Undergraduate pharmacy student . A professor of a lab discover my extremely passion and childish wondering at my field and select me to be a lab assistant for his department. After 1 year of lab work, he decides that i am the perfect person to be his research assistant (his previous assistant get his master and leave). They pass 2 years since then and i am research assistant now in the 2 biggest labs in my uni. I have 1 publication and 4 more they are in the process of getting accepted. In 2 of them, i am 1 author (i was the person who came up with the hypothesis). I also wrote the last one (mini review). I can say then that i have a good lab experience as an undergraduate student. As it is clear now i wanna do a phd and stay in academia. I wil get my degree in a small university though (THE Rank. 600) and i am looking now for a phd position in a bigger university maybe in Germany or Switzerland. Did you think that the small university that i am doing my degree is gonna have a negative inpact in my application?
    Thanks for your time.

How could a student write a bachelor's or master's thesis if he didn't work in a lab? I mean every student should work in the lab during a studying or I am wrong?
