I wanted to see the Alan Tudyk panel but the line for that was sooo long when I got there that I figured it would be better to get a decent seat at the Spike/Drusilla panel than risk the line for Alan Tudyk getting cut off on me!
Not only it's said on wikipedia, he says it on buffy season 7 over and over, and on Angel season 5. I cannot believe some so-called fans keep saying he wanted his chip removed when he went to Africa.
He could already hurt Buffy or kill her. He didn't have to make any changes cause remember, she cam back wrong. So, I'm going to say it was set up to mislead the audience to think that when really, definitely a get my soul back thing.
Never planned. If you remember correctly, Spike asked the demon to make him how he was, so he could give Buffy what she deserved. Phrased a bit differently, perhaps, but that's what he said. He never asked for his soul. The demon thought that the soul was necessary to give Buffy what she deserved; a man she could allow herself to fall in love with (After Angel that is) In my opinion, Spike probably wanted to be his old self, so he could kill her. Whichever the case, Spike never planned his soul.
I feel confident beyond ANY doubt the writers/Whedon used the ambiguous wording to create a cliff-hanger, to make the audience think what you think -- but that Spike's actual intention was, all along, to regain his soul. Listen again to his words in "Beneath You" (Season 7 Ep 2) when Buffy finds him in the church, half-crazed. When Buffy asks what happened to him, Spike says: "I tried to find it, of course. . . the spark . . the missing. . . the piece . . that fit . . . that would make me fit . .. because you didn't want . . . " And his words later in the scene, when she asks him "Why would you do --?": "Why does a man do what he mustn't? For her. To be hers. To be the kind of man who would never . . To be a kind of man . . . And she shall look on him with forgiveness. And everybody will forgive and love. He will be loved. . So everything's OK, right?" Spike is laying his soul bare. He's not lying. He was SEEKING his soul. And her forgiveness and hopefully her love. Some of what he says in that scene, about Angel not warning him and the spark burning, could have been uttered even if he had gotten his soul back unintentionally. But not the lines I quoted, not unless he's lying through his teeth, which I don't believe for a moment. How anyone could view that heart-wrenching scene in the church and still think Spike did not seek his soul is beyond me. Quite seriously: did you even *see* that episode?
I couldn't get in 'cause I was in the Alan Tudyk panel and couldn't get in 'cause of the line already formed. I'm so glad you posted this, thank you!

What does James mean by, Spike has never planned and done something big? Um, James, Spike getting his soul back?
