  • We all know that there are certain stains on a boat that are just downright difficult, if not impossible, to remove. The internet is full of boat cleaning tips for helping tackle those trouble spots. But some of those boat cleaning hacks are just plain dangerous. BoatUS Magazine's fishing and electronics editor, Lenny Rudow, shows you three helpful tips, hacks, and tricks for tackling the toughest stains on your boat: mildew stains on vinyl, dried fish blood, and hard water spots. Using some very basic cleaners available in your grocery store, like OxyClean, Bar Keepers Friend, and vinegar, and a little bit of elbow grease, you can restore your vinyl, scrub the decks, and keep those windshields sparkling. Prevention is your best friend, though, so make sure to put that coat of wax on the hull in the spring and seal your vinyl to prevent mold and mildew from forming. What would you recommend for getting out a stain on your carpeted areas?

      Thanks for your question, Jason. It depends what caused the stain. Do you know what caused it?

    Are the OxyClean and Bar Keeper's Friend safe for the environment when you spray it overboard?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      What an awesome question! First things first, EVERYTHING is toxic in large enough quantities. That said, when it comes to cleaning boats, you're always going to have runoff, so it's a matter of using products that are the least impactful but still do the job. If you look at the ingredients, OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover breaks down into oxygen and soda ash when mixed with regular water. It's much less impactful than, say, a chlorine-based cleaner. Same deal for Barkeepers Friend. It's biodegradable and doesn't contain bleach, phosphates, or harmful abrasives. It is much better for the environment than using Comet, a comparable product. When cleaning, we recommend using products according to manufacturer instructions. In our own cleaning tests, we've found that using products in stronger concentrations than recommended don't clean any better. Stay tuned for our upcoming August/September issue where we publish the results of our cleaning and lab tests involving "green" boat cleaners. (The ones you ask about were not included though.) We also cover how to minimize impact depending on where you boat and what time of day you clean. It's pretty interesting stuff!

    How do you feel about using toilet bowl cleaner on yellow scum lines on the lower hull of your boat?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question, Joey. As to our opinion on using toilet bowl cleaner on your boat: While we've heard of folks using it successfully, we're going to have to recommend against it because of the environmental impact--and also because that's not the product's intended use.
      Here's why: Toilet bowl cleaners contain muriatic acid (aka, a dilute version of hydrochloric acid) as the active ingredient, which is very toxic and corrosive. Remember that everything eventually runs into our waterways, whether you use it in the marina or in your driveway. The acid kills essential grasses (or your lawn) and harms marine life.
      A better option would be a product specifically designed for boat hull cleaning. There are plenty out there. If you're concerned about the environmental impact, look for a product like Star brite SeaSafe Hull Cleaner. The manufacturer claims that it's environmentally friendly and biodegradable. That said, in our independent tests of green boat cleaners www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2019/august/boatus-foundation-puts-green-boat-cleaners-to-the-test, even products marked with those labels are lethal to marine life, and there's little to no standardization in their use. Think of products like this as "safer," but not necessarily "safe." Bottom line: Any boat hull cleaner is going to be less harmful than using muriatic acid.
      Despite what we think (even though you asked us), if you're going to try using toilet bowl cleaner anyway, do it as responsibly as possible. (This still does NOT constitute an endorsement from us in any way!) Ensure you work far away from washing anything directly into any waterway--and also away from any grass/plants you want to keep. Start by washing the area with a good pH balanced boat soap in the recommended concentration. Follow ALL label directions on both the boat soap and the cleaner. (Note: I've read that the acid may ruin the bristles on your good deck brush, so you may want to use something else.) After applying the cleaner for the recommended amount of time, flush it thoroughly with fresh water. Wash the area again with boat soap to neutralize the acid. Follow up with a good wax and polish.

    Does that last tip work with fish blood that has been sitting for months?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question, AsianPasta! I'm not sure if the vinegar/water would work on that (the last tip), but give a little Barkeepers Friend a try. It's one of the less toxic cleaners out there and the abrasiveness will likely get it up. Just be sure to give your boat a good waxing to help keep future stains from forming.

    Vinegar and water is the all time best for boat glass or plastic, car windshields and the chrome fixtures in the head or home bath. Cheap and bio friendly. Use the rest on your salad!

    • @boatus
      @boatus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your feedback. Interestingly enough, our Foundation recently tested a number of different products marketed as "eco-friendly" and "nontoxic" and compared them to a vinegar-water solution, and the vinegar-water was more harmful to marine species than most of the other cleaners. That said, it is still an effective cleaner for some tasks, so be sure to use it where it won't get washed directly into a water source.

      That's a great point, Travis. EVERYTHING is toxic in large enough quantities. Suggestion, don’t clean in circles on plastic windows, always straight lines to prevent swirl marks.
