      Saturn squashes in the playfield like EVERY other CPS2 port to the system, but other than a couple minor things it’s the better port overall. The PS1 version has a weirdly off resolution, the intro is crippled even further, polygonal textures used for super explosions and faking the ground perspective rowscrolling. Though honestly, Sega messed up pretty bad not giving the Saturn at least a 360x240 resolution mode or SOMETHING. Would’ve made all the CPS2 ports better visually and you wouldn’t have any of the “larger sprites” issues.

    This one closer than I expected. While no frame rate counter I could tell the PS1 slows down a bit more. The Saturn version also loads faster so I give the slight edge to the Saturn.

  • @baronhausenpheffer
    @baronhausenpheffer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    I know conventional wisdom is that Saturn kicks Playstation's butt all over town when it comes to 2D fighters, and I do think the Saturn version is slightly better here (mainly larger character sprites and faster load times), but I don't find the difference nearly as noticeable here on Alpha 1 versus most other Capcom fighters. Maybe because it's an early fighter in this generation and therefore less demanding, the PS1 puts forth a very respectable effort, I think, and it's VERY hard to tell the difference on them at a glance unless you're looking closely. I could actually see more of a difference in the credit roll than anywhere else.

    • @HellTantrumbull
      @HellTantrumbull 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The game isn't as animated as alpha 2 and 3 so the ps1 and Saturn were able to capture all frames of animation for the characters with the only real problem on both systems being the opening scenes where the game isn't changing characters like the arcade does due to only having 2mb ram to work with.
      Sprites aren't really bigger on the Saturn version like some people keep saying, it's actually just the resolution it's using why all games capcom ported to it look bigger than the arcade versions.

    • @Carlitos-cv7mt
      @Carlitos-cv7mt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the resolution is incorrect on saturn... that's why it looks "bigger"

    • @Darknight0681
      @Darknight0681 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Carlitos-cv7mt resolution is incorrect on both. PS1 it's too high vertically which is why you see the graphics cutoffs at the top of the screen during jumps. Saturn's is too low horizontally which is why things feel squished in and some UI elements were altered. The PS1 also had clearer audio, but the Saturn outside of that was closer everywhere else. Neither version is as good as CPS2 remixed soundtracks be damned.

  • @vladurban6036

    Saturn right out of the box. Pixel grid or 'pixel structure' is broken on PS1, you can see it clearly on 1:40 (character's portrait background). It seems that they just change the screen resolution which caused raw scaling of the sprites and well broke em up. Reverse situation was presented with Castlevania: LoS it's broken the same way but this time on Saturn.

      @Toxic Overwatch To save memory while making the game look better than the previous console conversions of any Street Fighter, every 2D sprite in the game is actually a group of polygons. They’re not scaled right additionally

  • @FranMatsusaka

    I'm surprised by the fact that the ps1 graphics are zoomed in! You can see this in second 5:30, where there's not background and you can see clearly the artifacts generated by scaling up the graphics.

    For some reason the Saturn version is cropped in some areas, while the PS version has the correct aspect ratio. The HUD is how it’s suppose to be on PS while the Saturn is slightly altered to fit the screen. If you look at the assets, they are close or at the edge of the screen on Saturn. The PS version has the gaps, especially if you look the character pics and Super Meters. On PS the loading times are longer, but the sound effects and voices are clearer. • @thepulseman7154
      @thepulseman7154 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, even though the games were overall better on the Saturn, they tended to sound better on the PS1. I read that's because the PS1 supported more advanced sound compression at the time, but I don't know how much of it is true. It's not strictly related to CPS ports, it often happens especially when a 4 MB ram cartridge is not involved. I'm mostly thinking about KOF 96 and 97, both PS1 and Saturn ports sound muffled, but the PS1 ports sound better nonetheless. Though KOF 95 was quite the contrary, they really pulled some magic with that rom cartridge.
      To be fair, there are instances, with no cartridge involved what so ever, where the PS1 port sounds worse, X-Men COTA comes to mind, though I have quite the nostalgia for that PS1 port and sound quality as that's what I played as a kid.

      Has to do with while the Saturn has more sound channels 32, it only uses PCM compression. The Playstation has 24 ADPCM channels. (ADPCM is especially better with voices)They both have 512k of sound ram.

He was salting you to the very end haha crunch time. The older 2-d fighter's AIs and bosses can be so dang brutal sometimes. Gotta exploit them out.
    Anyway Saturn version looks better, has faster loading times, and superior controls (especially if using the official model 2 Saturn controllers). So Saturn wins in my opinion. Saturn has the edge when it comes to 2D fighters, and PSX has the edge when it comes to 3D fighters. Neither were arcade perfect though, to be honest. Both had downsampled sounds, and some cut frames of animation here and there. Both are perfectly fine for home ports though. If you needed 100% arcade perfect, then you either bought the arcade version, or a Neo-Geo AES. :)

      The port has no missing frames of animation on characters. What it does have is distortion of the sprites. Unlike the Saturn ports of all Capcom’s arcade 2D fighters, which all have slight cropping at the sides (or have “fatter sprites”), the PS1 version of SFA1 has a unique form of wrong aspect ratio with sprites. For an easy to spot example look at any dither/ checkerboard patterns, the pixel grid will not look even on PlayStation.
