Thank you, Mrs. Volfie. My son has been preparing dog food for his dog and freezing it. Now with this video He can do it better, because He can make it in the pressure canner and put away in the pantry instead of using all his freezer space. You are awesome!!! Blessings Laura M
I've been making my dogs food for a couple years. I've learned a couple shortcuts. I use my 18 quart roaster, if my meat is boneless(very important since you can't really debone the mixture we'll ) I will but it in my 18quart roaster with the veggies, rice and water overnight. Let it cook for 8-12 hours, come back in the morning, stir it all up, add more liquid if needed and then can it up. I use quinoa and oats instead of rice sometimes and coconut oil makes their coats supper shiny and soft.
This video was sooo helpful THANK YOU! We just caught and processed 8 (20-30lb) King Salmon. We got about a 5 gallon bucket of scrap meat and chum. Our pups are going to be thrilled!
I make my own cat food. I used whatever is old in my freezer too, but I cook it in my crockpot for 24 hrs. That way the bones get very soft and I can grind them up easily and put the bone meal into the food too. I also give them some of the meat raw. (It's what the vet recommended for cats but I don't know if it's good for dogs too.) The raw food satisfies the "wild" in them and no, it doesn't hurt them like it does humans.
we've been doing this for at least 15 years. we cook a huge roasting pan full of pork, liver, carrots, squash sweet potatoes and ground eggshells. then another roasting pan of rice. throw them in the oven and cook em for an hour. once cooled we blend it together in a food processor. it comes out the consistency of canned dog food. but we always froze it. I am looking fw to canning it and having it be shelf stable. I wish everyone would do this. it is SO much better for your dogs. that kibble is garbage. if it's not fit for me to eat it's not fit for them to eat either.
A couple years back, I had to house/. sit for a friend, and she had 2 small dogs. I made them homemade dog food for, they preferred the chicken to the beef. My friend was living on a very low income. I used cheapest chicken I could find, boiled and deboned, chicken broth, carrots, French style green beans. I mixed all together and I froze mine, in 16 oz drink cups. Would set out to thaw before feeding. I tried the same recipe using hamburger and beef broth, but the dogs preferred the chicken flavor.
This is such a smart way to clean out your freezer and to be honest the end result looks a lot like the name brand wet dog food that you pay $2-$3 for a tiny container in the store. Gracie, is getting a gourmet meal!
May i suggest that you put water in your freezer bags to cover your food and then it will freeze like that and you wont get freezew burn without air getting to it. Hope this helps you. And by the way you are the reason that i have started with my chickens and canning. Thank you for your time that you spent to share your life with others.
Gracie is glad you didn't answer. You are so right you can always use any food unless it is spoiled. Great idea using meat for Gracie. I know I use to save all my grease in the winter time for our dogs. I either pour the grease over the dry food, or if I had the time I would make them a special treat of gravy. Good way to use milk that is getting a little old, make the animals gravy during the winter. Not only a treat, it helps to keep their coats and skin healthy. I see Miss Gracie with that little nose smelling the goodies.
It's hard to keep freezer burn at bay for long term storage, even using vacuum seal bags. A great way to still be of use. Another way to do it, IF you have the freezer room is to place all freezer burn food in one section or in a big bag then just get out a small bag at a time and fix that day for the pets.
Long time visitor first time commenting. Bev, you have taught me a lot over the last several years and I really enjoy your candid videos.Your ideas are extremely helpful! I wanted to share with you my routine when I make dog food as you say "want not waste not". When we harvest our excess roosters I will pluck and de-breast them (for ourselves). Then I cook the left over carcasses in my roaster oven for a day or two. I then strain the broth and can that for ourselves. I add more water to the roaster with the the meat and bones and cook longer. I then put the meat and bones (soft by now) in a grinder leaving the liquid in the roaster.. After grinding, all that goes back into my roaster with rice and carrots. when rice is done, I then can it for my dogs. I don't have a recipe, as you say, " I just wing it". Thanks again for sharing your homesteading knowledge. BTW- because of you, I now own 3 adorable milking goats! :)
I just made dog food tonight with some freezer burnt deer burger meat, kidney beans, limp broccoli, scrambled eggs (my husband won't eat them a week past date), and the last of the expensive kibble they didn't like. I was so glad to see this video for more ideas! Thank you, Mrs. V!! Have a wonderful week! 😊
This is a really great idea and it's one of those things when you do clean once a year or whatever the freezers and get everything cleaned out this is a great way to use those things thank you for sharing
i do something similar. when we dispatch chickens, most of the skin, less desirabe parts, get canned in small jars marked dog food . the same when we get our home raised pork back from the slaughter house, we have two small to medium dogs and a cat! we add leftover rice, veggies, etc. when we open a jar. They much prefer it to purchased animal food. one pint of meat and whatever leftovers makes enough for 2 or three days, JOY
Good video, I just made and canned some last week. I had some leftover hamburgers, hotdogs, and ham. I mixed it with peas, carrots and rice. They love it! Will definitely do it again.
Wow you rock!!! I so need to do this I have 2 Shepard’s and 1 border collie they go thru meat like crazy I’m new to canning but it would make my life so much easier !!!
She does..I tried it on her before I started canning it..and this morning..she had her first jar over some kibble..why? because she won'teat the kibble!
Miss V can always give Gracy bones to chew on though, like antlers & such. Those will help with chewing action. I buy water buffalo horns & deer antlers for my two dogs and they *love* them. 🌾 Green Blessings 🌿
+Sansa Stark I have to tell you this, I'm sorry but it made me howl!😂 We don't get many Buffalo or Moose, (Mooses?, Meece?) strolling down the streets of Nottingham. There ARE Deer in Scotland but hunting them is very strictly controlled. (I know you can probably buy them on Ebay or Amazon,) it was just the mental picture I had of going out to catch Antlers for the dog. Ah me! 😂
I save all my scraps and trimmings from cooking/canning in freezer bags and do the same thing. Add green beans as well. Great vid on waste not want not
Gracie is one pampered pooch. You are an amazing pet owner. Now that is very healthy dog food....you can't get that quality from the store. Thank you for sharing.
I used to make food for my pups but couldn't keep up (2 90lb Rottweilers). They are now on raw meats/organs and thriving....I get most of the meats from people's freezer burnt meats, I mix it with store bought.
Thank you for this video Bev. A few years ago I was gifted with a stand up freezer. I do not need it so I am gifting it on. I am sure I will find meat and poultry better suited for dog food for my little dog.
Freezer burnt pepperettes/salami I just chop up and throw in the soup pot or spaghetti sauce pot where the texture of the meat makes no difference. I've frozen homemade dog food but not canned any yet even though I've collected some recipes.
What an awesome idea! You have no idea how many #'s of ruined meat we've thrown to the wildlife over the years, due to freezer burn, power outages etc etc
This is the best idea I’ve heard in like forever. I’m going to do this because we have 2 golden labs. Inventive way to use up freezer burn protein! Hey, that happens to all of us, don’t fib and say it doesn’t lol 🦋💜
Thank you for making this video - we have 5 (yes FIVE) big dogs and going through dry dog food is a bit costly. I'll be going through the freezer in the next week or so and will be using some of the meat for dog food :)
I was excited to see you made the video. I hope we'll be getting a dog soon. this will come in handy when things fall and we can't get food. great idea!
I knew I'd find this on your playlist. Thank you for your help once again . A deer was hit infront of our house and sheriff had to shoot it and gave to us. Winner winner we all get venison dinner . even the chickens.
I was making my dogs food for awhile but with canning season, 4 dogs, and carnivorous in laws living with us it all got to expensive and too much on me. The dogs hate me now, but we had to get surgery for one that was $1000 so they will have to get over it. Rather have her around. She is my soul dog

if caught in shtf it looks edible for people just not appetizing and as to freezer burned meat all that really means is loss of moisture in the meat Freezer burn is a condition that occurs when frozen food has been damaged by dehydration and oxidation, due to air reaching the food. It is generally caused by food not being securely wrapped in air-tight packaging.
I have recently started to make my own dog food, chicken breasts, rice, veggies and dog approved seasonings and its sooo much healthier, nevermind cheaper, and its never in the bowl more than 30 seconds...lol
Mrs. Volfie, which pressure canner do you recommend? I'm very new to it and need a bit of advice on it please. oh and do you still have any more copies of your cookbook?
I have a 4 month old miniature schnauzer do you know when I can start feeding him Chicken and rice? and how much right now he eats 1/2 cup of IMAMS in the day and I give him a 1/2 cup at night but he always wakes up to some left
I don't think I would have thought of doing this. What a great idea. I was watching another you tuber canning something and she filled her jars, ran around the edge of the jar with vinegar then said this is a good time to test for cracks, and then ran her finger around the top of the jar and put the seals and lids on. Well I decided after that not to watch her anymore. Your thoughts on that method?
Here is a new question from me I keep wondering if I could use the canning technique to preserve Jerky? I don't own a bag and seal Or Food saver machine yet.
Hi Bev😀, I have a ?. Have You thought about after wrapping the meat in the paper wrapping, Placing it into a Zip Lock Bag, then in a Plastic container. I don't know if that would work, but I have wondered about it😀. Lord Bless & 🤗 of 💛 Sandi 🌻💛🌻
Hi Bev! I love your videos. I am a K9 handler and I work in Search & Rescue. One word of caution when making homemade dog food. The ingredients that you used on your video do not, in and of themselves, give your dog a complete and balanced vitamin and mineral profile. I know you said you feed Gracie kibble as well. Just know that not all brands of kibble offer the right amounts of vitamins and minerals either. I would recommend supplementing with a daily dog multivitamin for the rest of her life, to make sure she doesn't suffer from any deficiencies and her body can process food and energy efficiently. Thanks!
Cool i just found your channel thanx to big family homestead. I hat throwing out freezer burnt food and haven't found easy dog food that i agree with. Lol my last 2 kids just over 18 don't want help from mom even the local news said mallineals refuse to learn from parents and its not working so they ran a class called adulting 101 lol it was a big hit. 4 hr drive plus i let then know about the class and no way. So ya these kids go hungry cuss the pay check didn't last and they make deals with each other like taking turns buying dog food and get in fights like babies over who's turn it is. Lol now refusing to learn mom eat cheep tricks my can food has disappeared for the first time in my life. I'm letting it stay gone cuz no help does not mean sneak behind my back. That lead to an obvious confidence esteem issue when they had to ask me. So now I've changed to saying " oh man i made to much for just me if anyone wants some go for it " only when they haven't ate for a couple days and then they don't eat much. Now they have no problem feeding there dogs my good food rather I'm looking or not and boy do i get mad ya they like that. So I'm hoping this might help my two young men be smarter about getting on there feet in life. I've gotten a little smarter with these mallineals so i will not say anything and see how long it takes for them to see the label "dog food" mean while when that aren't looking i can stretch the dry food the kids can go hungry if they want to be that bull headed and the dogs can eat like kings waiting for these two to learn budgeting there own way. Lol k back to checking out your channel i already like it enough and subscribed. The new canning lid's got me hear lol i couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong. Lol it wasn't me and no were did my lid's tell me to change so thanx a ton for that tid bit
Bev if she would by some chance get those pepperettes just the right way it could block her trach. can't tell you how many times we would have a dog come into the office almost dead or even.....and the owner cut the pet some hot dogs like you just did and it got the right or wrong turn on it. When I make my dog food, and I have special needs pom that will be 16 on Sept 3. He can not swallow food. So I have had to make his food all of his life, I used the broth from the meat or juice off the veggies to cook the rice. Doc always recommended 50%meat with 50% rice mixed with whatever veggie. Never onions, garlic, or pork.
I have done this too and always use half pints. Important to use plenty of moisture. The rice continues to suck it up! My girl loves this.
Thank you, Mrs. Volfie. My son has been preparing dog food for his dog and freezing it. Now with this video He can do it better, because He can make it in the pressure canner and put away in the pantry instead of using all his freezer space. You are awesome!!! Blessings Laura M

Re watching this as I bought myself a pressure canner as a birthday present in September. I’ve never pressure canned, lol, but am planning on learning.
Pressure canning is the best!

Great idea! We have an old dog who has a hard time with the processed canned food and I could make him some good food now!
Wow you rock!!! I so need to do this I have 2 Shepard’s and 1 border collie they go thru meat like crazy I’m new to canning but it would make my life so much easier !!!
Live & learn on the paper Bev. Miss Grace looked VERY interested in what you were doing with those jars, she'll love her new dog food.

Thank for that I wasn't sure I could can rice dog food. Cause my dog like any food's I've found so I mix it with veggie rice. God bless.
Oooh! Good idea! You could also add sweet potatoes!
what vitamins and minerals are you adding to the food?
hi, any updates on this? how long do they store?
This is the best idea I’ve heard in like forever. I’m going to do this because we have 2 golden labs. Inventive way to use up freezer burn protein! Hey, that happens to all of us, don’t fib and say it doesn’t lol 🦋💜
Great idea! Someone left the freezer door open at my house and i have about 5 ten pound bags of chicken. Now i know what to do with it. God bless.
Thank you for sharing this! Gracie is one lucky girl! :)
Thank you for making this video - we have 5 (yes FIVE) big dogs and going through dry dog food is a bit costly. I'll be going through the freezer in the next week or so and will be using some of the meat for dog food :)
I was excited to see you made the video. I hope we'll be getting a dog soon. this will come in handy when things fall and we can't get food. great idea!
Brilliant. As always.
Thanks Honey!
this is so awesome..I love how Gracie is watching you while you work such a beauty!😁
it's because she has already had some and LOVES it!
I knew I'd find this on your playlist. Thank you for your help once again . A deer was hit infront of our house and sheriff had to shoot it and gave to us. Winner winner we all get venison dinner . even the chickens.

Happy day to you Bev! Just a note on boning the chicken for dog food...why? Thanks so much from your big ol' Oklahoma fan.
when I pressure can chicken I DO give my dogs the bones as a treat because they are so soft.

thank you I will add ground eggshell next time
I always see all my typos after people have read my post I am grateful that you could decipher my post here
Try the tattler Lids...We have been using them for a few years...They are great....
I have 2 small dogs and one young medium dog. My medium dogid a very high energy dog she is a heeler. I am thinking i am going to an quarts because my heeler is a big eater. I am have lots ofpotatoez i canned years ago that we didn't get eaten. What ratio of meat to starch or veg do you recommend?
if you can manage it? 50% meat to 25% each of the other. if not 1/3,1/3,1/3.
Thank you so much!

How long is the shelf life?
As long as the seal lasts!
Thank you Bev when I was looking for a dog food recipe I was pleasantly surprised to see you have a video about it. Yeah. Love your videos❤
I saw Gracie loitering around your feet while you were filling jars. I think I heard her say "Hey Mom, you forgot my taste test!"
she had already had some for breakfast..that is why she was hanging around!~ lol
Thank you sooo much for this video! We have a puppy coming in September and I want to make all her food. Xoxo
It's a lot of work..but worth it! I will be making dog food out of all the organ meat come butchering season!
+Beverley Volfie Gracie will love that! And I will love the video😂
I like this lady
Thank you
I have recently started to make my own dog food, chicken breasts, rice, veggies and dog approved seasonings and its sooo much healthier, nevermind cheaper, and its never in the bowl more than 30 seconds...lol
what vitamins and minerals are you using?
great dog food mix !!
Good idea.
Mrs. Volfie,
which pressure canner do you recommend? I'm very new to it and need a bit of advice on it please. oh and do you still have any more copies of your cookbook?
I have a 4 month old miniature schnauzer do you know when I can start feeding him Chicken and rice? and how much right now he eats 1/2 cup of IMAMS in the day and I give him a 1/2 cup at night but he always wakes up to some left
Good idea Bev! How much per day do you feed a 20lb puppy?
dogs learn to regulate their own feed. they always have food out and "graze". so much easier for them and you, and I have not had one problem.
That is such a good idea
I don't think I would have thought of doing this. What a great idea. I was watching another you tuber canning something and she filled her jars, ran around the edge of the jar with vinegar then said this is a good time to test for cracks, and then ran her finger around the top of the jar and put the seals and lids on. Here is a new question from me I keep wondering if I could use the canning technique to preserve Jerky? I don't own a bag and seal Or Food saver machine yet.
I have no idea..I have never made jerky..I wish I could be of more help!
Thank you anyway

my pleasure!
I have a question for you because I'm really unsure of an easy way to do this, but do you have any tips on pitting fresh cherries?
buy a cherry Pitter on eBay
Awesome Video, Thank you
I'm sure miss Gracie is gonna love that !
great video thank you for shering
great job. Time to make that dog food
We add pumpkin or other squash to homemade dog food
chickens and pigs like leftovers too! :)
Does this work for cats too? I don't have a dog, unfortunately.
Cats will eat it but I think they will prefer a glass of wine with it.
Cats need taurine and other nutrients in their diet for good health. I wouldn't risk it.
Awesome 👍 Xx
And could tell me how you dehydrate merol mushrooms.
Healthy for Gracie. She lives her mama.🐹
This a great idea, but, I heard from an onion farmer that there dogs go out and dig up onions and eat them!! I guesss each dog learns from the last??

Do you put anything in to help prevent it from spoiling? How long is the canned food good for?
N o Need! It is pressure canned! It is as good as long as the seal holds!
Such a great way to 'save' meats that you can't eat yourself. Thanks for sharing.
my pleasure
why not store the rice dry and just can the meat. this will save on precious jars
Good Idea!
👍❤
Lucky doggies!
Thank You ; AWESOME VIDEO Keep them Coming God Bless Your Family to. "The Herbal Survivalist"
I'm sure the pigs wouldn't mind getting some of this as a treat. lol You know pigs they will eat anything.
a meat grinder would have made fast even portions then add rice
I thought you had another dog other than Gracie?
