I have done this too and always use half pints. Important to use plenty of moisture. The rice continues to suck it up! My girl loves this.

Thank you, Mrs. Volfie. My son has been preparing dog food for his dog and freezing it. Now with this video He can do it better, because He can make it in the pressure canner and put away in the pantry instead of using all his freezer space. You are awesome!!! Blessings Laura M

I've been making my dogs food for a couple years. I've learned a couple shortcuts. I use my 18 quart roaster, if my meat is boneless(very important since you can't really debone the mixture we'll ) I will but it in my 18quart roaster with the veggies, rice and water overnight. Let it cook for 8-12 hours, come back in the morning, stir it all up, add more liquid if needed and then can it up. I use quinoa and oats instead of rice sometimes and coconut oil makes their coats supper shiny and soft.

We just caught and processed 8 (20-30lb) King Salmon. We got about a 5 gallon bucket of scrap meat and chum. Our pups are going to be thrilled!

I make my own cat food. I used whatever is old in my freezer too, but I cook it in my crockpot for 24 hrs. That way the bones get very soft and I can grind them up easily and put the bone meal into the food too. I also give them some of the meat raw. (It's what the vet recommended for cats but I don't know if it's good for dogs too.) The raw food satisfies the "wild" in them and no, it doesn't hurt them like it does humans.

we've been doing this for at least 15 years. we cook a huge roasting pan full of pork, liver, carrots, squash sweet potatoes and ground eggshells. then another roasting pan of rice. throw them in the oven and cook em for an hour. once cooled we blend it together in a food processor. it comes out the consistency of canned dog food. but we always froze it. I am looking fw to canning it and having it be shelf stable. I wish everyone would do this. it is SO much better for your dogs. that kibble is garbage. if it's not fit for me to eat it's not fit for them to eat either.

A couple years back, I had to house/. sit for a friend, and she had 2 small dogs. I made them homemade dog food for, they preferred the chicken to the beef. My friend was living on a very low income. I used cheapest chicken I could find, boiled and deboned, chicken broth, carrots, French style green beans. I mixed all together and I froze mine, in 16 oz drink cups. Would set out to thaw before feeding. I tried the same recipe using hamburger and beef broth, but the dogs preferred the chicken flavor.

This is such a smart way to clean out your freezer and to be honest the end result looks a lot like the name brand wet dog food that you pay $2-$3 for a tiny container in the store. Gracie, is getting a gourmet meal!

May i suggest that you put water in your freezer bags to cover your food and then it will freeze like that and you wont get freezew burn without air getting to it. Hope this helps you. And by the way you are the reason that i have started with my chickens and canning. Thank you for your time that you spent to share your life with others.

Gracie is glad you didn't answer. You are so right you can always use any food unless it is spoiled. Great idea using meat for Gracie. I know I use to save all my grease in the winter time for our dogs. I either pour the grease over the dry food, or if I had the time I would make them a special treat of gravy. Good way to use milk that is getting a little old, make the animals gravy during the winter. Not only a treat, it helps to keep their coats and skin healthy. I see Miss Gracie with that little nose smelling the goodies.

It's hard to keep freezer burn at bay for long term storage, even using vacuum seal bags. A great way to still be of use. Another way to do it, IF you have the freezer room is to place all freezer burn food in one section or in a big bag then just get out a small bag at a time and fix that day for the pets.

Long time visitor first time commenting. Bev, you have taught me a lot over the last several years and I really enjoy your candid videos.Your ideas are extremely helpful! I wanted to share with you my routine when I make dog food as you say "want not waste not". When we harvest our excess roosters I will pluck and de-breast them (for ourselves). Then I cook the left over carcasses in my roaster oven for a day or two. I then strain the broth and can that for ourselves. I add more water to the roaster with the the meat and bones and cook longer. I then put the meat and bones (soft by now) in a grinder leaving the liquid in the roaster.. After grinding, all that goes back into my roaster with rice and carrots. when rice is done, I then can it for my dogs. I don't have a recipe, as you say, " I just wing it". Thanks again for sharing your homesteading knowledge. BTW- because of you, I now own 3 adorable milking goats! :)

i do something similar. when we dispatch chickens, most of the skin, less desirabe parts, get canned in small jars marked dog food . the same when we get our home raised pork back from the slaughter house, we have two small to medium dogs and a cat! we add leftover rice, veggies, etc. when we open a jar. They much prefer it to purchased animal food. one pint of meat and whatever leftovers makes enough for 2 or three days, JOY

+Sansa Stark I have to tell you this, I'm sorry but it made me howl!😂 We don't get many Buffalo or Moose, (Mooses?, Meece?) strolling down the streets of Nottingham. There ARE Deer in Scotland but hunting them is very strictly controlled. I was making my dogs food for awhile but with canning season, 4 dogs, and carnivorous in laws living with us it all got to expensive and too much on me. One day I want to go back to that, even bought a couple of books and watched a fantastic series of videos on it. The dogs hate me now, but we had to get surgery for one that was $1000 so they will have to get over it. Rather have her around. She is my soul dog

Happy day to you Bev! Just a note on boning the chicken for dog food...why? Those bones are filled with nutrients and they soften in the pressure cooker so there is no choking danger, put 'em in your dog food! Even when I can chicken for the family (no salt) I treat my 4 dogs with the bones...they love em! If you have an objection to them please reply so I know not to do it anymore. Thanks so much from your big ol' Oklahoma fan.

I am so happy to see the dog food recipe here. I have watched a few and geeze They add all these added vitamines and stuff It would not longer many it cost effective. I made some that we will keep in the refrigerator because it was that much But what I liked is the waste not want not I had some freezer burnt ground beef and I gave it some brown rice and canned veggie that were a bit over their expiration date. .I did forget to add the egg shell power I wanted ask If you ever do that You bake the shells at 300 degrees for 30 minutes then grind them up in a old coffee grinder and it add calcium to their food But thanks for keeping it simple!

if caught in shtf it looks edible for people just not appetizing and as to freezer burned meat all that really means is loss of moisture in the meat Freezer burn is a condition that occurs when frozen food has been damaged by dehydration and oxidation, due to air reaching the food. It is generally caused by food not being securely wrapped in air-tight packaging.

Hi Bev! I love your videos. I am a K9 handler and I work in Search & Rescue. One word of caution when making homemade dog food. The ingredients that you used on your video do not, in and of themselves, give your dog a complete and balanced vitamin and mineral profile. I know you said you feed Gracie kibble as well. Just know that not all brands of kibble offer the right amounts of vitamins and minerals either. I would recommend supplementing with a daily dog multivitamin for the rest of her life, to make sure she doesn't suffer from any deficiencies and her body can process food and energy efficiently. Thanks!

Cool i just found your channel thanx to big family homestead. I hat throwing out freezer burnt food and haven't found easy dog food that i agree with. Lol my last 2 kids just over 18 don't want help from mom even the local news said mallineals refuse to learn from parents and its not working so they ran a class called adulting 101 lol it was a big hit. 4 hr drive plus i let then know about the class and no way. So ya these kids go hungry cuss the pay check didn't last and they make deals with each other like taking turns buying dog food and get in fights like babies over who's turn it is. Lol now refusing to learn mom eat cheep tricks my can food has disappeared for the first time in my life. I'm letting it stay gone cuz no help does not mean sneak behind my back. That lead to an obvious confidence esteem issue when they had to ask me. So now I've changed to saying " oh man i made to much for just me if anyone wants some go for it " only when they haven't ate for a couple days and then they don't eat much. Now they have no problem feeding there dogs my good food rather I'm looking or not and boy do i get mad ya they like that. So I'm hoping this might help my two young men be smarter about getting on there feet in life. I've gotten a little smarter with these mallineals so i will not say anything and see how long it takes for them to see the label "dog food" mean while when that aren't looking i can stretch the dry food the kids can go hungry if they want to be that bull headed and the dogs can eat like kings waiting for these two to learn budgeting there own way. Lol k back to checking out your channel i already like it enough and subscribed. The new canning lid's got me hear lol i couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong. Lol it wasn't me and no were did my lid's tell me to change so thanx a ton for that tid bit

Do you put anything in to help prevent it from spoiling? How long is the canned food good for?

Such a great way to 'save' meats that you can't eat yourself. Thanks for sharing.

Bev if she would by some chance get those pepperettes just the right way it could block her trach. can't tell you how many times we would have a dog come into the office almost dead or even.....and the owner cut the pet some hot dogs like you just did and it got the right or wrong turn on it. When I make my dog food, and I have special needs pom that will be 16 on Sept 3. He can not swallow food. So I have had to make his food all of his life, I used the broth from the meat or juice off the veggies to cook the rice. Doc always recommended 50%meat with 50% rice mixed with whatever veggie. Never onions, garlic, or pork.
