While everything does hinge on TSMC for the time being, major efforts are in play in an effort to onshore this capability. It will of course take many more years, and one of the locations is TSMC also, they will likely lose market share by the end of the decade. I think he downplayed them due to the profitability compared to the others. Most of the chips TSMC makes are not critical items. About 30% of NVidia's products are gaming chips. How will the world come to a halt if you cannot play Call of Duty at 4K and 60 fps? Will the world end if there are no iPhones? Wafer fab is only a small part of the computer ecosystem.

@@scottanderson9656 Yes if you can. It’s not easy to ramp up on a 5nm chip with very exact euv processes. You just go slower with higher power envelope but using exactly the same software stack with 10nn even 14nm which global foundries and other chip companies can manage if Taiwan factories are destroyed.
@@francisdelacruz6439 Ok you don't get it. The chips process are much more powerful and much more efficient. This means that you get more done with less. You can put a man on the moon using an abacus but all things considered it's not a good idea. Processing power is important as is efficiency and going slower often is a very very bad idea. Then again if you want to ride a horse to work go for it sport.

TMSCs importance in exaggerated. They only fabricate wafers. They do not design chips. I would recommend reading the SIA State of the Industry (pdf and freely available). Intel and Samsung are as capable in wafer fabrication. The investment banking industry has been pushing Intel to get out of the fabrication sector. How then is TSMC so valuable? Most of the chips TSMC makes are not critical items. About 30% of NVidia's products are gaming chips. How will the world come to a halt if you cannot play Call of Duty at 4K and 60 fps? Will the world end if there are no iPhones? Wafer fab is only a small part of the computer ecosystem.

Intel and Samsung cannot produce nearly as many chips as TSMC can. TSMC has 59% market share (by revenue) in the semiconductor industry... and they make around 90% of all advanced chips. Advanced chips are critical for military, AI, and research applications. Without TSMC the world would not have been nearly as advanced as it is today.
The 59% share you cite is for foundry services. Intel makes most of its chips internally, and they do not show up in foundry statistics.@@snailedlt
