    My friend in Alaska has a m35 with the arctic kit. It occasionally goes critical and shoots fire out the vent on the outside. I guess coming back to your vehicle in a parking lot doing a volcano impression is something most people don't get to experience.

    I live in ND and yes it gets as cold here as you think it does! I did a bit of engineering on the heating system in my Deuce and I relocated the heater unit from under the hood to inside the cab, it fits very nicely under the glove box area and you can still feed into the valve body for your defroster. This increased the efficiency of the heater unit by at least 50% by not having freezing air forced into it and it reduced the lengths of the heater coolant hoses to less than half their length and keeping the length as short as you can greatly helps in keeping the coolant temp in the hoses at a higher temp, resulting in more heat to the heater core. I also went over my firewall and plugged all the holes that are not needed. Making sure your weather stripping on the doors and windows is also important in keeping cold wind out. The winter front on the truck is a very good addition in that it helps to keep the temp of the engine up where you want it. I strongly disagree with only covering half of the radiator because it makes your fan flex way to much when it has to deal with a dead air space where it gets no air to move. The hood cover which is part of the Arctic kit did not seem to do much for my truck I only used it one winter and it just didnt make much difference. I have driven my truck in -10 degrees many times and once the engine comes up to temp its very comfortable inside the cab.

    What you REALLY need is the insulated bra and foam floorboard kit that is part of the Arctic kit offerings. My roommate and I outfitted our fuelers in Germany with these two items because we were always on the road in winter, and you never knew what you might be up against. We got caught in a snowstorm during a convoy and spent the night in a Parkplatz. It got to be -20° outside, but a very comfortable 70° in the cab. Well worth the effort. And if you can't get the bra, cover half the radiator with cardboard.

    I have 2 trucks. one with regular heat and one with the Arctic heater. the Arctic heater has one temperature "hot" .It does work really well, you could actually burn yours hands on the dash if you leaned on it!!! I really enjoy your videos BC!!! keep it up

      @Jeff hold the switch in the start position for 3 minutes, when you hear it kick on switch it to run. There's not much info, mine has the starting instructions on the door.

      3 minutes seems like forever to hold it, especially when your cold. I timed it with my phone, that was the average time it took, I believe I read it somewhere too.

    The Arctic Kit consisted of a quilted cargo box cover, and the ends were plywood. There were plexiglass windows along the sides, and some had windows at the back. The diesel fired heater in the back looked like a Yukon stove in a way. There was also a diesel fired heater in the front cab. No radiator or fan in the engine compartment. The cab heater was self contained. Many trucks burned up because when a heater got hot soldiers would place their coats on the heater. I still have photo's of a M151A2 going up in smoke because of a burnt up coat. I never saw a front quilted cover for a deuce in use in Alaska during the mid 70's although the grommets were in place.

    A passenger vehicle has a lot of insulation too when you consider carpet and padding and fabrics on the headliner etc. which makes the heat go much farther than a bare metal cab.

    Some of my over-the-road trucks had Wabasto heaters in the sleeper. They were fuel oil fired with an electric blower. They worked pretty well.

    Mine does. I added an additional heater core and fan under the passenger seat. I also have the heater kit under the hood. I ran the heater hoses through the holes in the floor for the ambilocal plug. Works great. Now I have great heat in Michigan.

    I'm thinking about buying one since I have to move back to California. None of my vehicles now aren't smog legal for California. But guess what? A deuce is. So dumb I think. Might as well. Hahahahaha 😂

    You did a really good job with this video. Actually this is my favorite Deuce & Guns video.
    I just got back from a late cold rainy night 1 n 20 min run in the mountains with it partially snowing. Well I’ve only had my truck a few months and haven’t ran one much in decades.
    It seems like the heater & defrost might had some issues but could be driver error/ operator maintenance ,ha,ha,. So getting on here to re-educate myself on the heater was helpful. I do think there might be an issue with the blower motor though ? Check it out tomorrow.

      P.S. got to have the coffee thermos , that topped the video off, I found an American made one on e-bay, I take it with me in my truck, real Army like, ha,ha. Great videos B.C. Do more Deuce videos, please. How about filling up the fluids even the transfer case , rear ect,,,. What ever might need it annually .

    I'm told the arctic kit is also quite good. I myself almost ended up daily driving an M35A2 in fairly cold temperatures and started looking into this, for in the winter. In Alaska. In Fairbanks.

    Back in the early 1980's Canada bought M35. We still have them but they are very old. Bombardier put them together under lic from the USA.It was a fantastic truck and one of our back bone vehicles. I use one as daily driver to repair Weapons at work. Canadian Soldiers have always wrapped rags around the vent tube leading into the cab and also the vent tube inside the fire wall.secured with what we call Gun tape...In the US Military they call it 100 ..200 Mile tape. Also green rags tucked around any draft area..It takes awhile to heat the cab but all this helps. We didn't get the multi fuel version. Basically we got a desiel School bus engine with an automatic Alison Tranny. It works good but like i said we got the cheap option.

    most of the deuces that i seen with a Artic heater where the troop carriers, it was set up in the rear in the canopy, it was just a stop gag, but it got pretty warm back there when it was a full seat in the rear.

    Yup! They didn’t want the soldiers hanging out in the trucks to stay warm. As soon as I gut my 54 load master I took the so called heater right out and put a 92 Nissan heater core box and fan in, we also put a new rear heater in. Now it’s nice and warm! Love duces great trucks!

    I was thinking that you might be able to turn the air intake 180° toward the cab and connect it to the summer cab vent so it would circulate the warm air. I don't have a duce of my own to test it out my self but it was a thought from watching your video.

    Our Deuces and 5 Tons were not plumbed / vented/ equipped for heat. In the few trucks we had heat in, It was because we installed the heater unit INSIDE the cab on the passenger side floor up against the firewall. Hot water was controlled by a manual on/off valve in the heater hose under the hood. There was no heater control panel. Just a toggle switch for the fan.This had advantages and disadvantages. The air was recirculated air instead of fresh air. On the coldest days in Wildflecken or Hohenfels Germany you would have to turn the heater fan off from time to time to keep from getting too hot but there was nothing to direct air to the windshield vents, the fan switch was only on/off with no selection for high and low and if you wanted to turn the hot water on or off you had to go under the hood.

    Former Army mechanic, the blower is wired direct to the battery. They did this because "lo" is wired to half of the battery bank (12V) and "hi" is wired to the entire bank (24V).
    At least, that's the way it was on 900 series 5 tons (also AM General products).

    When you were showing under the dash I could see a lot of holes in the firewall! If you plugged up some of the holes it may not get so hot in the summer in the truck. Also is there a way to stop the hot water from going through the heater so it could blow cooler air in? Just some thoughts! Thank You for the video

    The wind through the window edges forced me to put a 12V heating blanket on my left shoulder lol. Then found out that a cheap 12V solar panel hooked to the battery heats up because of the alternator voltage swings and used that as a seat warmer!

    Thinking about how miserable my 74 VW Thing was to heat in a Minnesota winter (think all metal, no insulation, soft top, and windows, kinda like wearing a raincoat in a blizzard), and despite running dryer vent from the engine compartment to defrost windows, never trusted gas heater. Twice I used (during week below 0F) and was so hot I though vinyl top would melt.

    Nothing beats a deuce hood falling on you while retrieving an oil sample when its 5 degrees outside. Funny now but it wasn't for me at the time.

      Once after a bad snow storm I was helping my dad with his plow truck and we had to jump start it and there was alot of heavy snow on the hood and it fell and slammed on my hand..... guess what a 1990 silverado 3500 hood hurts

      I added o e to mine and I constantly cussed the defroster hoses . They were a bitch as well as the hose that goes on the blower motor to the fresh air intake.

      @@georgedistel1203 I found that mid 60s Camero defroster hoses are 3 1/4 inch and fit the Deuce perfectly.

      I've got a 70 f250 that i love but unfortunately I'm going to have sell it due to health and being out of work. It's a great solid truck too still has the original am radio and it works. Wish I didn't have to sell it.

    How does the radiator one work? About like a bag of crap. It doesn't warm anything up, and it barely defogs the window.

    I think I would work ar slowing down the air coming in and put some insulation around. I know with the top you have you can't stop all the air but ever little bit helps.

    Really wish you would have shown the heater hose connection on the engine. I think one should be screwed into the outlet on the water pump and the other one on the neck for the thermostat but that's just my guess.

    The blower in my deuce also comes on without the master ignition switch. Much like the lights in the deuce, pretty much everything is hot wired.

    There are several companies that make a aftermarket heater that coule be installed under the dash there that would help a lot.

    When we knew there was a range or duty coming up, We would start warming them up a good hour or so early to make sure the metal around the engine compartment was nice and toasty and the kick vents were closed for sure.

    Im my days at ft lewis we used to stuff big towels arpund the gaps arcoss the back window and on parts of the floor trans tunnel and over the doors keeps me nice and warm didnt look pretty but worked.

    For the heating system, have you tried using a cold air front on the radiator to help the coolant hold on to more heat for the heating system? I know I have had to do this on my tractor and also several cars over the years when the heating system can no longer keep up. The big key if you do that is to ensure the engine does not overheat but sometimes the radiators work so well in the winter that the small amount of coolant that flows past the thermostat actually cools the whole engine and keeps it below the temp where the thermostat opens all the way and the coolant never gets hot enough to really dump a ton of heat into the heating system.

      I thought about that but being in the south temps like this only happen a few days a year if at all. In colder climates having a front cover would be a big benefit during winter months.

    so is the m35 the only 5 ton with the multi fuel engine? the CAT motors in the m8-m9 5 tons are diesel only,,,, correct?

      Yep, the CATs are strictly diesel it should also be able to run on JP8 if you have that available.

      That's his turbo encabulartor rod. It keeps the tremme pipe girdle spring tight under load.

    One of your previous videos was about hydro locked engines. What do you do if you suspect a hydro lock situation?

      Jim Holley Depends on what you mean by hydro locked engines. If you mean the engine got water in it while it wasn’t running. You would first drain the oil and put new oil in it. Then take all the injectors out and crank the engine and the pistons should force any water out of the cylinders through the injector hole. You do this until it stops spitting water.
      Now if you meant you hydro locked an engine. There is only two outcomes. Either one you get super lucky and it wasn’t a super bad hydro lock, which is unlikely, and no damage occurred. Or the opposite happens. Mostly likely the engine is toast. It might still run but either never the same or will eventually break. Because when an engine hydro locks it is basically like while the piston was traveling upwards you smash it on the compression stroke with a sledge hammer because water doesn’t compress. There is four different outcomes. One is that right when the engine hydro locks, it spits a rod and things just got everywhere inside the engine and you will have to do a complete engine rebuild. Two, the pressure destroys the pistons head, usually along the side and your rings are screwed. So in this case the engine will probably still run but it will never run the same and have a whole bunch of blowby. Three it bends the connecting rods and it will run just fine for a while but once you bend metal it becomes weak and will eventually break. Thus spitting the rod and things just go everywhere. Four it smashes the bearings at the bottom of the connecting rod that go around the crankshaft (the name is slipping my mind) and they will wear out super fast. Putting a lot of metal in your oil and eventually seizing. Which means guess what? It spits a rod and things go everywhere.
      So basically if the engine doesn’t blow up right when it hydro locks, you should rebuild it even if it runs because most likely an internal part is damaged and will eventually fail causing it to break a whole bunch of things. Now if you just wanna hope and pray that nothing internal got messed up. I would still do the steps of changing the oil and taking out the injectors and cranking to shoot all the water out that may still be inside, no matter what you plan on doing after it hydro locks because water sitting inside your engine (where they don’t put rust preventative stuff in because it’s not suppose to have water in it) is a bad deal. This is especially important if you plan to take the hope and pray approach.
      Now if you talking about hydro locking any engine not just deuce engines or Diesel engines. Take the spark plugs out of a gasser instead of the injectors because it is easier when trying to get water out of the engine by cranking.

      Try turning motor over BY hand backwards 2 complete revolutions. Then turn forward 3 times. Ifotor is free fire it up and drive on. Look at smoke, color will tell you what to change

      Tony L I had to put a kill switch inline before the main blower motor switch on mine because my kids and their friends would go in there and play army, and as kids do ,they would move all the levers and switches and often when I went to start the truck the batteries were dead because they would leave that switch on.

    I believe the blower motor switch should always be powered. That big engine holds plenty of residual heat to keep the cabin warm while the engine is off during short stops. I'm thinking military logistics drop-offs or the like.

      Could be. I still think it's odd for it to bypass the main power switch unless they had concerns about the lift pump causing a hydrolock. There's probably an odd ball reason that I'm not even thinking of and would never come up during regular civilian use.

      The oddball reason for the fan motor being directly connected may just be that it was that the heating was an accessory to be retrofitted as needed , no one could be arsed to install a relay for it. Too time consuming to install, and adds in complexity.

      Nope. A/C only became standard on military vehicles when the started slapping armor on them because you're not supposed to open the windows in a threat environment or can't open the windows at all

      Other than routine maintenance I've had to repair the blower motor on the heater twice. Many people think that the items listed as routine maintenance sound like mechanical problems though which include axle boot replacement, three fuel filters to keep drained of water and replace, two oil filters, oil the winch cable (if equipped), drain the water out of the air tanks every day, take care of what feels like about 700 zerk fittings, locating the correct 24v lights/making what you can find work, and the list goes on.

    i drive a 1977 chevy truck in the -40f montana winters....
    heater does the smae thing.....tries REALLY hard.....but their are so many leaks
    just keep your coat and boots....ya will be fine
    but...its got a 1200w heater that pumps the anti freeze threw the block.....and a "little buddy" heater in the cab that runs off of 120volt
    still isnt enough some days

    Back in the 70's we would mount the regular Deuce and a half heaters between the seats in our jeeps. On high they would run you out of the jeep! Tank heaters were even more messed up. They ran on diesel also and had a Flame Detector Switch connected to a glass rod. When you ran the heater more than an hour the switch would burn out. It was impossible to get spare switches so you were forced to run the heater 24/7. If you turned the heater off it would not start again without a new switch. The tanks used to get so hot you were driving around in your underwear in the middle of winter! LOL! The Russians got around this by not having heaters in their tanks at all.

    they would have had to add a relay on the ignition
    the fan motor would pull too many amps....and fry the ignition power lines.....
    so....its probably just hooked directly to the battery, with just that switch (which is a beefy switch).....
    simple, cheap, effective.....and thats what the military wants

    So amazing to see yours with the true standard transmission too bad yours don't have the gear reduction / auxiliary transmission basically another transmission behind the first, there were VERY few equipped like that but very good to see the manual rather than the automatic heck out government requested to have all automatics due to the worthless kids getting recruited and not being able to learn / anyone willing to teach how to drive manual true story once there was a sergeant who was unable to drive his POV home and no one in his unit could drive it for him

    Seems all A2 trucks will run the blower motor with the ignition switch off. In my opinion that is a design flaw since someone can leave thee blower on with the engi stopped and kill the battery. On the m35a3 the blower will not run with the ignition off.

    U need to get some stainless steel dryer hose for the blower hose. Home Depot has it for a cloths dryer in stainless.

      It's about average for the 3-4 times per year we have any snow at all. We usually get freezing rain instead of snow.
