- Please take a look at my other video that shows Ghost Towns in Scandinavia ( Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland ) • Amazing Ghost Towns In... Varosha Info Below
Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, on 20 July 1974 in response to a Greek-backed coup, the Greek Cypriot Army withdrew its forces to Larnaca. The Turkish Army advanced as far as the Green Line, which is the present day border between the two communities. Just hours before the Turkish Army and the Greek Cypriot Army met in military combat on the streets of Famagusta, the entire population, fearing a massacre, fled. Many refugees fled south to the towns of Paralimni, Deryneia, and Larnaca. Paralimni has since become the modern day capital of the Famagusta province in the Republic of Cyprus.
When the Turkish Army gained control of the area during the invasion, they fenced it off and have since barred admittance to anyone except Turkish military and United Nations personnel. The Annan Plan had provided for the return of Varosha to Greek Cypriot control, but this never happened, as the plan was rejected by Greek Cypriot voters.
The reason why Varosha is abandoned is due to the UN Security Council Resolution 550 (taken in 11 May 1984),[3] which in short states that: "attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible". Since TRNC is not allowed to resettle the area and the area is under TRNC control, this situation led to the abandonment of the Varosha district.
Since 1974, entry to the district is forbidden with the exception of the TSK personnel and the students of the girls' dormitory in there.
As no one has inhabited the area and no repairs have been carried out, all of the buildings are slowly falling apart. Nature is reclaiming the area, as metal corrodes, windows break, and plants work their roots into the walls and pavement. Sea turtles have been seen nesting on the deserted beaches. Car dealerships are stocked with vintage 1974 models, and years following the abandonment, people claimed to have seen lightbulbs still burning in the windows of abandoned buildings.
My home until 1974. I was there during the invasion. Yes, it is abandoned and guarded. The old part of Famagusta is still occupied, but the Varosha district (where I lived) is abandoned apart from a hotel on the seafront used by the Turkish army. I hope to return one day.
Must be very hard to see your home look like it does now. Very sad and I'm sorry to hear that. That place is still amazing and insanely captivating.
Thaks for the comments and the sentiments. Yes, it's heartbreaking to see it as it is now. It was such a beautiful town. It is now occupied and being used as a political pawn in the ongoing situation surrounding the division of the island. I hope to return one day and see my childhood home. I have lived in England since I was evacuated out of the island during the war
Dave Massey call it Ammochostos plz
@zadose Turkish army has invaded the land and refuse to let rightful owners back...even though they were a Guarantor power for Cyprus....its basically a land grab..
Dang Dave ! I’ve been watching cypress documentaries all day.. such a beautiful island, and people ...
I would love to visit someday.
Did they make you move to England?
I assumed that the refugees, moved to different parts of the island .
I said a prayer for the whole situation 🙏🏻
Hey, i'm from Famagusta and i'm actually suprised to find this video. By the way i want to state that last few photos of the town are recent photos form the walled city of famagusta and not from varosha. Thanks :)
I served with the Irish UN in Cyprus in 1968. It was a beautiful Country then
Famagusta was a lovely City
Pity to see it in such a mess.
+Joseph Kane , where the moors invade ....becomes a 3rd world hell hole.....read history......
+brenda mills No need to invade in modern times.Moors can annihilate simply by settling in a area.
+Lancelot Xavier popping out zillions of kids on the dole, that get halal food at school, free!
Joseph Kane I think the UN should leave, they are the ones who stabilised us like this and drawn the line on the map
Joseph Kane shouldn’t make it a mess then
I hope they will demolish Varosha and make it a green area , can't you see that all those ugly buildings completely buried the coastline with cement ?
I served with the UN in the buffer zone in Nicosia in Cyprus in 1991. We patrolled the zone 24 hours a day. Most of the buildings were booby trapped but the ones we could get into were very creepy. Especially at night.
bruffmeister1 Un - turkey- britain- usa . those are who caused the war in Cyprus
Tnt Maar I do not know the causes. I was there to maintain peace.
bruffmeister1 you were a UN member and you didn't know who the stackholders are ?! very bad
Tnt Maar We needed to know the strategic points on the ground and strong points held by the Turkish and Greek forces. We neede to know the limits of the buffer zone and our rules of engagement. We knew that Turkish forces invaded the island. The politics were not my concern. Only maintaining the peace which has been achieved since the invasion.
yea..and steal our land !
This takes me back, use to live in Famagusta in 1972 and left just before the invasion. I would love to go back there and tour the place, would love to see where I use to live there - what it is like now. yeah I know it will be derelict, but would still love to see it.
I can remember going to the beach and just playing there yep I was a kid then. getting our Kebabs from the guy who always walked the beach selling them. I can still see him now in my memories. He got to know us very well and always kept some for us.
I just wish that the politicians would learn that what they think is right for the people is not always what the people want. My message to the politicians is to bury the hatchet and just let the people have back what is rightfully theirs, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots lived next door to each other and got on together. yes there are those whom would argue but that happens everywhere.
So my message is lets get this place back to being populated again and let our children and grandchildren have the fun that we did.
It's nice to see that there is people out there who knows that it wasn't the people's war it was a political war my grandmother always told me that even in the war when Turkish people was shot my the army Greek neighbours of the same street will take them in and protect them and in Turkish streets where the Greeks where getting shot by the army turks will take there Greek neighbours in and protect them we did live happily and yes every one argues it's normal now that we live separately doesn't make us happier
It's government who's to blame for apartide
Doesn't look that scary to me. Try Detroit Michigan in broad daylight. Man that place sucks.
+456swagger People keep talking about detroit.. perhaps I should make a vid about that too?
Yea, Or maybe one of those little shit towns like Arkansas.
456swagger Haha alright
+456swagger F*ck u that's just mean and disgraces people that live in quiet towns in Arkansas.
+XenoGaming It's not possible to disgrace someone. A person can only disgrace oneself. Using obscene words like "fuck you" is one example. Best wishes filthy mouth. I bet you live in Arkansas.
i wish there is actual video not just pictures.
If I ever go there I'm going there with either a quad or petrol go kart. Just think how awesome it would be flying around the turns sideways on and finding carparks to fly through especially multistory ones. Then relax flying through the mall at 100mph.
This music is so beautiful it takes me to another world
golddigger007 Thats good! :)
DarkCreatorn
+golddigger007 The music is by Loreena McKennit. She is an awesome musical talent.
+golddigger007 I think that is the soundtrack to "The Mists of Avalon", just in case you want to check it out.
Mystical Dream
Beautiful music...Thanks for the video
Really enjoyed these photo slides and the music was beautiful. Perfect together.
Thank you! It's nice to get comments like this :)
The video lacks music LOL
would be awesome to turn somewhere like that into a paintball venue
i agree it would be super awesome
forget the helicopters bring in the anks and custom made paint ball nuke
So sad, and scary.we need to treasure our world before it all becomes this way.. TY for sharing and it was beautiful to watch and the music was perfect. Very respectfully done... Look forward to seeing more hidden old gems.. Be amazing if one day these once lively places could be filled again.. 😉
Thank you soo much! It's pretty weird that cities as big as this just gets abandoned.. if you're interested you could check my other ghost town videos on my channel :)
Robyn London I agree with what you've said.
Cool video and thumbs up liked for you.
If there is any question left of joining the EU by Turkey, this film is the answer .....
***** thats exactly what I wanted to say. Turkey is not Europe, and if they don`t get out of Cyprus and stop helping IS, they will never join EU......
***** Sorry, wrong tempus: IS AT WAR since 500 years with short interuptions...
***** Sorry, it should be Irony. 'I meant, that the war with Ottomans, turks and muslimism is still going on. I´m far away to critisize anybody because of language. Mine isn´t english either.
switzerland
sarrois It is the Turkish PM who wants to join the EU not the citizens of Turkey if you were to read and follow news. They don't want to join an obviously sinking ship.
I would love to sneak in, and pretend to be in "I Am Legend".
HAHAHA I was thinking a similar thing but more a zombie apocolypse haven
Lord Dranek same difference
The Urban Jungle In "I Am Legend", they were pretty much a vampire/ zombie hybrid. That's an interesting mix, in my opinion.
supercyberfunk vampire / zombie hybrid .....yeah does sound like turks ...lol
supercyberfunk you are not allowed to go there, especially if you are a Cypriot
Really?! Thank you soo much for sharing! It's really sad tho :(
was there a few weeks ago,did notice the odd parked up pre 74 car that has just been left to rot,ive got to say the its an absolute gem off a place and was nice to relax with a lovely large efes beer in the town centre.
Back in October last year I went on the open part of the famagusta beach infront of the abandoned hotels, I actually swam in the sea aswell. It was so creepy with those abandoned hotels just a couple of metres from where I was.
To the author of the video : Dude ... the most big and scary place is the city of Pripyat and the whole zone there,it's the most remarkable place you can see ...
I was thinking the same thing...
The Chernobyl Zone of Alienation, especially Pripyat puts this guy's video to shame for sure.
HM The Tsar of Russia So.....that's what your remarks are about? Competition? Obviously neither you nor Bogey Stalkier know shit about this location on the video, because, strangely, ya'll don't have anything to say about it.
Pripyat is old stuff. Everybody knows about it. Not "remarkable." Seen it once, seen it, period. Yawn.
Nice video 📹
those empty buildings were our play grounds when we were young, used to sneak in with a friend of mine all the time :) great childhood.....
I would have liked to be the friend..:). Sneak in...
would have loved that :)
why they left and how many poeple was living overthere
LOL, YOU ARE JUST DUMB !!!!!!
WHICH ONE?
wow theres a few people in the pictures
The music is mesmerizing.
Almost looks as bad as Detroit.
Nah... Detroit is worse - it's still populated, yet large areas look even worse than that video...
I live in detroit. Its not this bad
I am impressed by the big amount of satelite-antennas to be seen at 2:08. Didn't expect any private sat-antenna in the mid-1970's...
I noticed this too. They look post 1974 to me.
Nice video
Mists Of Avalon Theme I LOVE IT
Like seriously... There are so many homeless people in the world and then you have have these huge cities which are abandoned.. Perfectly good buildings wasting away and people who are freezing there asses off, the priorities of the world are very fucked up atm... Understandable if the reasons for abandoning are because of BIO HAZARD but alot of these places are not... #ANNOYED
+Hunee Bee you must certainly be aware that it's actually not the problem, it won't solve anything even if you allow homeless people in those area.. this is an economic issue and even if people went to that place how would they got food, and how would they got electricity , job ...
+Hunee Bee This town is inside the Buffer Zone... No one is allowed to go there, because of the turks
+Bigfoot I expected you would be posting Bigfoot videos lol
+FancyArms9mm big foot exist and there
are several type of this creature...
+William Baratheon Yeah right, and I saw a Chupacabra flying in my back yard last night -haha !
Thanks for the story!! So you can visit the st nicholas cathedral?! :0
What a shame. Looked like this was a very nice place. My neurologist (Cenk Sengun) is from Cyprus and I'm damn fortunate to have such a great doctor.
Respect from the United States of America :)
I don't want to take away from this completely amazing video (really nice job whoever put this together!) but can somebody please tell me: WHO IS THE ARTIST / WHAT IS THE SONG &/OR SOUNDTRACK....loved it!!!!!!!!!!
Went here today and I have to say its quite remarkable too see. And the beach is amazing then when you look behind you and see the old abandons buildings is quite surreal.
Can't agree more! This place was a real famous tourist attraction and now it looks like that...
So very sad!!.I've been to Cyprus many times and have been to the border control at famagusta and look over to the ghost town
My girlfriends mum an family. Lived ther in 1964, then left sum Time later an its never been mentioned tht this happened. Fascinating to c this.
OMG How did u take out this video?
I went here as a child and I found it so interesting! Was only about 11 years old and I remember standing on the beach next to one of the abandoned hotels and I was mesmerised by how eerie and empty it was, never seen anything like it. Would love to go back!
if I lived in the US id be going to the grand canyon and newyork, never had detroit michigan on my list of places to go haha
JEFF COFFMAN
i agree in a way i live 30 mins from the city and there are parts you cant drive through without be shot lol
Martin Pelka All thanks to decades of liberal democrat government. Detroit is obama's vision/dream for the rest of America.
i do love the city and the people there. you just need to be carefull where you go. i have been treated great by detroit whenever i visit but i never go without a resident of the city
Music used? if it is worth useing in your video then i thnk it should also be worth mentioning and honoring the artist. !
Perfect music for this video........ Who's it by??
Watch......1974 cyprus conflict ambiguous differences. Great insight into the feelings between greek and turkish cypriots.
turkish invaded but it didnt develop it? why did they invade it then?
So turkeys a super power now😂🤔
Did I see satellite dishes in roof tops?
Didn't know those were around in 1974..... or 1984..... or.....
shady Lnu What you saw are recent photos of that area. Guess they kinda turned than into some tourist attraction.
I noticed the same thing. and several cars, newer, parked in lots. Right before I saw the satellite dishes I was thinking 'out of all the people in the world, someone HAS to be living there.'
I know they filmed part of a movie there...Goldmember maybe? pretty sure it was a 007. Maybe that brought a few people.
L.A. Picaso He got confused at the end with the walled part of Famagusta that have Turks living init now. Was there in 2012. Muslim invasion of a small nom Muslim country it's a European shame. The Turks have used a 1100 year old church as a mosque. First thing they did
i wonder how close this is to the truth or has the publisher of this video stretched the truth just a wee bit ? another thing not all of the before and after were the exact same scene so how do we know he didn't fake some of this
AUSCON / UNFICYP UN OP30 1985 - 1986 🇦🇹. ... my best ZS - soldiertime was there ..... greetings to all gekkos and all Cypriots and the ASIZ Troops 🍀🍀🍀✌️😁✌️🍀🍀🍀. God with you all ......... ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
this is a beautiful place to live
wow , that is scary ... darn those Turks
looks like a nice place. not too large of crowds.
That is amazing
i just seen a gaint size ice container for making ice cubes amazing
whats the name of the song that is in the video i would like to try and find it if i can
At 1:51 there's body's there!
It's weird if you look at Google Earth the South end of the city, where these pictures were taken, is called the Ghost City. But there is a distinct line where it becomes a modern city to the North with beaches, marinas, shipping etc. Even the ground cover goes from brown and spooky to green and luscious.
I love the music track. What's it called?
I lived in Famagusta when i was a kid, we lived less than a mile from there( My dad was in the RAF) That church is St.Nicholas Cathedral-Lala Mustafa Paşa Mosque which is within the walled city, this area was always Turkish controlled and that area is not in the restricted / no go zone.
Indeed, please the music credits!
''The satellite dish has been around since the mid 70's and was used for Space Missions from the USA and the UK - it was not till the mid 80's when the Satellite TV system was revealed, bringing TV from around the glode directly to your TV via the Astra satellite.''
I found that on google so that picture is probably taken shortly after the town was abandon.. because the guards started to remove objects after 74 and those were probably not removed yet. Idk if they are still there or not..
Yeah exactly! Imagine waking up in a ghost town..
Music by Loreena Mckennit. Beautiful. Well recommend a listen.
The music's beautiful. Is it Dead Can Dance?
nope it's mystical dream but i slowed it down and changed the pitch :)
What's the name of this song?
its very beautiful place before!!!but now they're forgotten and abandoned
Sad, such a waste of what once was a beautiful place to waste. The cathedral itself, Beautiful ..Saw comment on homeless, So True. Thank you for this ..
Cool!
this city is such a mystery, its been 40 years now and the city is strangely preserved better than normal, if you look at Hashima Japan, or Prypiat Ukraine, those buildings are pretty well destroyed, here they look good for 40 years of being untouched, and they are near salt waters that could decay steel when it evaporates.
This must be amazing to into a abandoned city and explore
what music is this, I love it
Loreen mckinnett
what music is this???
Lots of rooftop satellite dishes at 2:05, which means occupied residential dwellings.
At 2:11 the image shows what appear to be small satalite dishes on many of the roofs. Can anyone explain this to me. As of 1974 there wasn't satalite TV was there?
love this song I wonder why all these places become abandoned
Well coming to think of it, i have ideas for a horror/post apocalyptic series, which is kind of like silent hill meets 28 days later. the plot involving this guy who finds the hotel he only just checked into deserted which leaves him no choice to defend himself arming himself with anything useful, later meeting a group of survivors (college students on their summer break) hiding out whom he must work with to survive and to eventually head to a safezone with. should get all this stuff written down while its still kept in mind
sounds awesome, dont post it, write a script then sell it to Warner Bro's. Dont miss out on millions of dollars with that idea.
+Enel Dulcio that will be ideal, I actually dream this stuff by accident and it becomes all ideal.
this music though ! what is it ?
What is the song name????
Looks fixable.
Someone call Donald Trump.
+George Vreeland Hill Screw donald trump I want him to goto hell
right on.
+XenoGaming even hell dosn't want him satan hates him too
xD Lol
haters of trump back off
Interesting
Right now and I need a cool place to live at.
You had a shot of Nicosia airport???
1:50 that beach bit isn't abandoned, I was there a couple weeks ago :P
Wow id spend days exploring that.
1:52 look at the chairs under the umbrella, who are those people? and there are motorboats to.
+eloy rivera , the turks...the invaders....
don't be dumb that was a before pic also it is spelled too
Dave Campe dude I'm sorry it's just I was stressed at that moment
+1000CupquakeFriends it is a hotel for Cyprus military troops and there family now
I love how this person uses "got abandoned" instead of "was abandoned"
Song name?
We landed in VC10 on the way to Australia November 74 and thought it was odd seeing tanks around the R.A.F. base..we didn't know that Turkey had invaded!
I find that really weird too!
Honestly this is kind of heart breaking for me and I don't know why. Maybe it's the music but I feel like I wanna cry.
Sarah Gonzales emotions . need looking at objectively. they aren't always right and usually lead to somewhere else. a memory perhaps or unresolved issue.
Maybe the next asassins creed game can be taken there! That would be a awesome game, and if you can like go in almost every building and things
the only scary thing about this is the music
gives me the creeps!😟😖
Thanks to the British, most of Cyprus is still Greek. It's a crying shame this 'no mans land' remains, as it is prime for holidaymakers.
Been to Turkey once. Never again.!
I would say i felt racial discrimination, but as an Englishman then that is apparently impossible.! If not racism within itself to say as a minority, was threatened. Loved the rest of Cyprus. They should demand it back, and rightly so...with British backing.
u limey's with your white man's burden bs and ur long gone empire...
+Robert Bermudez You Robert are exactly what James Slack is talking about. You so called "minorities" treat anyone with white skin with distain. That makes you a disgusting low life RACIST. So shut the fuck up.
nah u got me wrong...but who cares what u think?
+Robert Bermudez You are a RACIST!!!!!!! Just admit it. The truth will set you free.
There was a other place in cypress which basically is turkey and they completely destroyed a massive church ( they ripped all of the crosses off and also inside there was only a red mat) . But I was a rebel and wore a cross necklace lol
That would be creepy to visit there by yourself alone.😱
There is a slide from 1:31 till 1:34 which is not from Famagusta, but from the Old Nicosia Airport's terminal building.
No tengo ni idea. Gracias :)
@ 2:31 there's a bunch of cars on the street, making turns, parking and stuff…come on!
also 2:11 almost every rooftop has a SAT dish that did not exist back in the 70's
madstoppie this is a real ghost city, in fact it’s the se one biggest city in that country, cyprus and these must be either old photos or photos of nearby areas of the city outside of ammochostos
Am Turkish and my grandpa served in the invasion so me and my family ate permitted to go to the military hotel/beach, albeit but a few, there still are some people due to the superb sea - at least in summer time -.
this is a beautiful city
That is spooky!
Indeed!
The entire city is under strict military surveillance. I wanted to visit back in 2010, but it was way too risky for me.
I'm curious is this place still abandoned today? Thanks
Of course since 74 Varosha is in no mans land most other parts been stolen though by the stinking Turks
I am from there, and you won't believe how beautiful it was before! (BTW this should be the next generation of call of duty zombies map)
