I miss David Berman...I grieved his loss more than family members and I didn't know him personally. I think a lot of people feel that way. Speaks of a special kind of person to invoke that sense of grief and loss in strangers. This was lovely. Hope his friends and Cassie are well.
I found out about David about 2 weeks after his passing. I was absolutely heartbroken when I found out, especially after listening to Purple Mountains last album... so sad.
His passing hit me harder than I expected. His words spoke to me and he was like the best friend I never met. I even went and got a tribute tattoo as a reminder of his lasting impression on my life.
Drag City should put together a Berman tribute album and back it up with a Berman tribute tour. Make it happen. Get Malkmus and Nastanovich on board. Let’s go.
Wow, this is one of the best and most provoking things I've seen in a long time. Well done Bill, Will, Cassie and everyone at Drag City who worked on this you couldn't have done a better job.
Beautiful. So lovely to see and hear Cassie. Our crusading heroes performing miracles for us over and over is a balm for the soul in these, or any, times.
I wasn't introduced to David until Purple Mountains, but it's now one of my favorite albums of all time and of course led me to SJ. Haven't been able to stop listening since, will forever be in my rotations. Love this so much.
Incredible amounts of talent involved in this and such a wonderful tribute. Thank you Drag City and thank you everyone who took part in creating this. Beautiful ❤️
I got to get a picture with Will at a lightning bolt show 2018 at headliners. Couldn't believe my bro spotted him. we were watching for him. I had just said I hope Will is here. My bro said there he is a couple minutes later.
David Berman was one of my favourite songwriters. I miss him. This is beautiful in that it reminds the world of a great poet. Having said that, I don´t like it as much as I would want to. I don`t mind the voices, but the solo - which was gorgeous when played Stephen Malkmus in the original version of the song - is now sadly unlistenable to my ears. Still, I like the fact that so many of great musicians are in there remembering someone we all admire so much.
I have the utmost respect for everyone involved in this cover but I guess I just don’t get this video. This is one of SJ’s heaviest songs and to see it treated this way feels a bit weird. But maybe David would have gotten a kick out of it.
what's there to get, really? sure, the video is a bit goofy; but it's also eerie in a way. these guys all love DCB, they're grieving. and we're all coping, it's been a wild ride these last two years. I'm glad we've all made it this far! love to see Cassie, love to see David back on his feet, love the fact that Bill is still making music. this is such a great SJ song, hope some new folks get to listen to it. other than that, it's just a matter of taste. blessings to you all, internet friends.
David was classically funny and goofy. I’m fairly sure he would’ve liked it. That’s exactly how he managed to break our hearts and make us laugh two seconds later. The humor/silliness is soothing. Kind a like the idea of having to laugh because things are so shitty. Also because there is joy in life. Hard to see sometimes but it is there. It’s important to hold onto hope.
@@kassandrakid9440 gallows humor is what I think you mean? But yeah, complex guy and worth every second you spend listening to him. Unlike some musicians, this won't change. That's the silver (pun intended) lining. He went out on the best possible note and at the top of his form in my opinion.
@@kassandrakid9440 I agree David was a very funny fellow and master of blending humor and pathos. Glad you and others liked the vid. I guess I just don’t like interpretive dance.
I’ve always understood “The Wild Kindness” to be about suicide and that’s why this cover/video is so unsettling to me. Anyone who knew David knew it was likely that he would die by suicide, so this cover/video Is disturbing. It’s a beautiful song, but this version, just ugh! David’s life and music should be celebrated, but not this way. It’s almost as if they don’t take death by suicide seriously.
I support the idea of publicising Berman’s work and the Drag City label, but I do find it odd that the people closest to him felt the need to honour his memory with such a crass, unsympathetic cover of one of his best songs. What made The Wild Kindness my personal favourite was the sombre nonchalance of the vocal delivery coupled with the soft, sweetness of the electric piano/Rhodes, this just sounds like a pissed up pub singalong with way too much guitar soloing. I do genuinely feel bad for criticising those involved given their talent and personal relationships with DCB but it needs saying.
@@bkt-n-spd I totally get where both these takes are coming from, and I had a similar reaction until I watched this video. I think Cassie's vocals are true to the mournful tone of the original -- which is also my favorite DCB song and, really, a masterpiece -- and, I don't know, I feel like a cover is never gonna have the emotional resonance that the original has, especially now, so I think the more upbeat approach really has a tribute feeling to it. And seeing as Cassie was involved with the song, I'm sure what reads as a tribute to her would read as a beautiful tribute to David himself. It's heartbreaking that he died by suicide, but these folks definitely have the right to celebrate DCB's life the way they see fit.
bloody awful video...why are they trying to make it memey? let the song sing for itself, you don't need to make it all LoLL tiktok..but big up, RIP Dave Berman, appreciate the song nonetheless.
Can these performers not hear each other? I don't understand the point of this. The original recording is 1,000 times better than this. This is an inscrutable mishmash. The poor coordination between the vocalists obscures Berman's revelatory poetry. The guitar solo is meandering and listless. With all due respect, please let Mr. Berman lie with some dignity. This is just not very good.

i''m onboard with this.
It gets me, when I look at Silver Jews on Spotify. Do you know what the pictures of the band are?
It's David and his family

Big fan of the literal 'four dogs in the distance'.
I love the "Cassie on bike" deep cut from Tanglewood Numbers. Love all around!
Could you explain this?

@@JuanaWynWithers thank you, I thought I had seen all of the SJ videos. That's definitely a reference to that.
I never realized Bill Callahan was such a wonderful dancer.
He’s a diamond
So glad to see Cassie Berman. Big love to you ♥
We all love you, Cassie!
Most definitely.
The original is one of my all time favorite songs.
Thank you for this, David would've smiled
Years later and this tribute still brings tears to my eyes every damn time…amazing cover
Every leaf in a compact mirror
Hits a target that we can't see
NO WAY I just found this. I loved David, then I found smog, then Palace music. And I just learned they have a whole song together??

I'm glad David Pajo is doing well, hope everyone else is doing too.
2 Wet Boyz and a Silver Jews cover, what a lucky morning!

Let's hold the world to it's word
I’ve been told you can live a long, long time on the love of a dog
No one ever gets the flowers while they can still smell 'em
The fact that pajo plays on this is all to much for me. I can't not cry when it reaches the solo, louder than words. God bless this lot r.i.p dcb

David Berman Forever 💜
This is a really moving tribute. Thank you.

indisputably one of the best covers i’ve ever heard. teared up a little to this one. amazing work on this tribute.
THIS IS THE BEST COVER IVE EVER HEARD 😭
thunder road by bonnie billy and tortoise is a great one as well~ cover of bruce springsteen! :)
@@goodboyconformist Also, the cover of Stevie Nick's Storm by Billy and Matt Sweeney is stunning and might just surpass the original.
Thank you.
Amazing.
Aww what a way to be able to honor David and his music, especially having his widow be a part of this
Reminded of Bob Odenkirk applying E-Z Kreme in that Tim and Eric bit.
that must be the by Doug Lussenhop influence shining through
He took my hand and said I’ll help you boy, if you really want to disappear
I was just thinking while listening to their other tracks that Berman would have been featured on these.
We love you, David
Thank you !
First silver jews song I ever heard and fell in love instantly. Cool cover.
Wonderful version of the best song ever composed by a human being
wow man love
Woah!
nice to see cassie, will, and bill add some levity to the video. truly a beautiful tribute. RIP DCB

That first burrito looks really good. I imagine they got it off a truck somewhere in LA.
Brilliant cover.
Is Slash also there with the guitar solo?

Firstly, It’s not bad, it’s just different. Secondly, I think you don’t get the whole idea of this cover, that’s why you think it is disrespectful.
