    The funny thing about Dormin is that it's not really being deceitful. It warns you that what you're about to do is against the law. It warns you that there will be a heavy price to pay. It keeps his word and restores Wander's love to life. And it doesn't even attack the priest and his forces until they attack it...or at all if you don't do anything. Is Dormin the villain? Is Wander? Are the other humans? Is anyone really good or bad in this story? That's one thing I love about this game. You can make a case for just about any angle you view it from, and it never really says one way or the other is right. It's up to you to take from it what you want to. Maybe everybody's the bad guy here except for the Colossi and your resurrected love.

    Y'know, I normally can't stand the "oh-ho, you're playing our game, are you? Well YOU'RE the baddy because you're doing these things, player! >:3" but I can respect it in Shadow of the Colossus. It feels less like an attempt at being deep and meaningful in a video game and more like the developers just... wanted to make a playable tragedy. It feels dignified, and unforced. It simply is.

      the reason it works in SOTC is because the protagonist and dormin are very upfront about it since the beginning, "i know and i don't care about the price" there wasn't a plot twist about you being evil, is just a bargain betwen you and dormin.

    It's easy to understate how important the soundtrack is as a factor in how much people love this game, I think. I suppose I can only speak for myself but everything about the music is brilliant. The music is appropriately curious and soft when you're figuring out how to get onto the colossus, then foreboding and powerful when you're climbing atop, then triumphant and grand with 'The Opened Way' when you've unveiled its weak spot and finally, when the colossus is defeated, it's sombre and melancholic, establishing the guilt you feel in taking this innocent creature's life. Simple but executed brilliantly by Kow Otani and his orchestra.
    I actually mellowed slightly on the game in my last play through, which was the remastered edition but still a mighty impressive and memorable gaming experience.

    You know, when you were letting the music speak for itself during the montage, I remembered how on my second playthrough I was able to correctly guess the score's composer: Koh Otani, because of the shrill horns that are used. Those same horns are used in his score for the Gamera movies from the 1990s. And I began to think of Gamera, a kaiju movie monster, you began to talk about the Kami and as I began to think of Kaiju movies as a whole you started showing clips of the original Godzilla.
    The idea of these giant monsters being these manifestations of nature is not a new one for me, but bringing up the Kami in the same context reveals words that I didn't have before and has my mind racing. Especially now how American Kaiju movies are finally starting to grasp and reflect this concept, ala Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island, and how this might be connected to our own looming environmental crisis.

    Agro falling from the collapsing bridge still gives me heavy feels to this day. Your only living companion in this vast and lonely world of epic creatures, throwing you from his saddle to safety, and then plunging into the river below, leaving the player shifting from being lonely, to being finally and fully alone, on the doorstep of the last living colossi in this world. And you're there to kill it. Such an incredible setup for the final battle.

I knew instantly what it was & I couldn't wait to see the movie. As it turns out colossus 1, 5, 13, 15, all make an appearance in the movie as does the World Map. Even some of Kow Otani's music for the game can be heard in one instance. S.O.T.C. has stood the test of time & will continue to do so. Now if only SONY will give us a director's cut with an expanded map, the missing 8 colossi, & access to the very top of the main temple.

    I'm so happy someone talking about Shadow of the Colossus focused on its cameo appearance in Reign Over Me. I vividly remember learning about this game from watching that movie. I honestly didn't think it was real, it seemed so different than anything I'd ever seen from a game before. I just knew that I knew I had to play it at some point. It took me about a decade to finally stop procrastinating and get around to playing the game a few years ago. But it was completely worth the wait and immediately become one of my personal all-time favorites.

    7:00 It's Dormin teamico.fandom.com/wiki/Dormin - but awesome video! I never knew about the movie Reign Over Me and your transitions and sections were a delight to watch. I adore Shadow of the Colossus - so much so that I bought the PS4 game without having a PS4 - then had the blessing that a coworker would lend me the console for a week to watch series and play the game. I want to play it again, over and over, unlock everything I can. It's truly beautiful, a spectacle, an experience, that has had a great impact on my life. When I heard of the remake I was ecstatic especially when it was confirmed the game would be nearly the same as it was (played the original PS2 version). The overhauled graphics were gorgeous. The scenes that were already amazing were made even more spectacular - water on shores, lush forests, endless dunes, textured shrines - all wonderful to behold. I even explored one side of the coast in the game and the spray, the audio everything culminated in a real immersive feeling... Ah I want to go back!

    Didn't see the spiel on art coming at the end of the video which is why I really appreciate your contribution and intelligence in the video game review community. Great job.

    The song that plays during the avión fight lifted my spirits like nothing else. And the song that plays during the final colossus fight filled me with utter dread. This game was so good at playing with my emotions during its story.

    Great video as usual!
    Also, jeez that remake looks so dark and hard to read.
    Also also, speaking of SotC's influence. I feel like the first Assassins Creed was inspired by it as well. Same way Ubi looked to Ico for their Prince of Persia games. SotC happened and Ubi decides to do a game where you explore a huge world, and the whole game is preparation and build-up for nine big boss fights.

    Couldn't have timed this better. I just finished Shadow of the Colossus for the first time last week and was pretty disappointed with the small number of videos discussing its deeper meaning and relevance. This video was great!

    Say what you want about Reign Over Me - but it’s incorporation of the themes of a game into the themes of a film was pretty great for its time

      It is a good movie.

    • @RenegadeSparks
      @RenegadeSparks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Nimbereth Except it really isn't, it's a shitty movie that uses 9/11 as a basis for Mike Binder to complain about women having expectations from their spouses, (like where Sandler's character finally opens up enough to talk about his family and the first line talking specifically about his deceased wife is about how she "never nagged like some wives do" and Cheedle's character's whole reason to be buddies with Sandler's character was to get away from his "nagging" wife) while Adam Sandler just plays another one of his manchild characters, but under the veneer of a "serious" movie with the guy, the fact it's regarded as the "best" Adam Sandler film just says a lot more about how terrible he is as an actor than how good this movie is, honestly

    • @RoastedLocust
      @RoastedLocust 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RenegadeSparks, your hatred of Adam Sandler sort of taints your view of the movie. It was a good film about a grieving man, not the misogynistic, 9/11 cash-in you describe.

    • @RenegadeSparks
      @RenegadeSparks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RoastedLocust respectfully, even removing Adam Sandler from the movie and replacing him with a good actor doesn't remove those lines I quoted, it just so happens Sandler is there and can't tell if he's supposed to be a dumb rainman (aka: one of two version of autism people who like Adam Sandler movies may recognize, the other being Sheldon) or just stay 100% in his manchild mode, and decided to stick with the latter after the first scene he was in. It still very much remains a "misogynistic 9/11 cash-in" in your words.

    • @RoastedLocust
      @RoastedLocust 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RenegadeSparks, it must be nice to be so enlightened that you don't realize that men and women both make critical statements about their spouses.
      It's also a bit hypocritical to call out misogyny in Rein Over Me if you're a fan of Sheldon Cooper or The Big Bang Theory. The Big Bang Theory is far more sexist in the way the four guys view and treat women than anything Adam Sandler has worked on. They get away with it only because they're viewed as harmless nerds though.

    I love Shadow of the Colossus because it makes me feel emotions only that game can draw out of me. The music is not only one of, if not the best ost I've ever heard, but they way it is used, is so brilliant that it gives me goosebumps to this day just to think about it. It forced me to overcome my fear of water deep black water to progress in the game. It also made me think about stories in games, being a kid, it was not something I cared much about at the time. Right now, shadow of the colossus is my favourite game, it hasn't always been, and it might not always be, but it will always draw tears out of me and inspire me like few other things have done. I hope that it's legacy will be even greater in the future.

    You start with a sword a bow and a friend, you end with a sword, a bow and a friend.
    That alone is compelling because there are no artificial barriers preventing exploration or progression.
    The rest was pure art, theme and gameplay

    I love Shadow of the Colossus because it is a perfect combination of what makes up a game. Atmosphere, soundtrack, narrative, gameplay, visual art, uniqueness and nostalgia. I played it when I was a very small kid, so I was able to endorse myself emotionally into the Forbidden Lands in a way an adult couldn't.

    Great video as always, George. It's kind of funny that we just covered Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Ass'n in my Constitutional Law class and then I see you mention it in the intro to this video.
    I played Shadow of the Colossus for the first time a few years ago and was absolutely blown away by it. It was a game I'd always wanted to play, but I never had a PS2 growing up. Few games are as successful at marrying thematic elements with gameplay. Btw, is there a reason you chose to use the PS4 version's footage instead of the original? I'm guessing you just had that file on hand but I'm curious if you have any thoughts on how it compares to the other versions.
