S2E39 Changing Tyres & Tubes - GreenSpeed X5

- My GreenSpeed X5 Recumbent "Rita" has Schwalbe Kojak 32-349 (16"x1/4") tyres with 1" CSR tubes on Presta valves. The valves are not replaceable and the time has come to change over to GreenSpeed Scorcher tyres with 16 x 1.3/8" A/V tubes on Schrader valves.
The X5 has disk brakes on hollow axels and I thought I would share the process of removing the wheels and reboring the rims from 6mm to 8.5mm to accommodate the Schrader valves, fitting the larger tyres and reassembling the front wheel and disk brakes.
Please feel free to comment below, we would love to hear from you.

Interesting. After getting stuck at the side of the road one day wrangling a tire onto a rim I invested in a Kool stop bead jack. Its still a pain in the neck whenever you encounter a recalcitrant tire, but there is less bad language.
I recently got the Tyre Glider after seeing it recommended on The Velomobile Channel. It makes putting tires back on the rims pretty easy.
Thank you for the advice, We will definitely look at this or something similar 👍😉
Tire choices in 16" are limited . As to flat repairs any rim I get has to be drilled for Schrader valves regardless if I am using Presta. I generally remove and put the tires on by hand ( no tools ) but I once almost broke my thumbs trying to get a tire on . Tools do come in handy on some rims with some tires that are just plain ornery to get together.
Thank you for your comment. You have tougher hands than us @bobloblawb2593. Serious question, do you ever use presta valves on those rebored rims? If you do, do you use spacers or some other protection for the presta valve?
@@peteandronnie My Bacchetta Giro A 20 touring recumbent came from the factory with Schroeder size holes in the rims and Presta valve tubes . . The difference in the size of the hole is minimal , but I have encountered places that do not have presta tubes for my 20 inch front wheel and having a predrilled rim works wonderfully .
A Schrader rim hole is 8mm and a Presta rim hole is 6mm.
So the main worry is sharp edges of the rim hole not the 1 mm per side of the valve.
On every bent I own I run presta as for some reason I have a lot of those tubes but out somewhere needing a tube it is good to be able to run Schrader if need be
Thanks For the feedback Bob. I didn’t think there would be a problem with the 2mm difference but have seen some people claim that one needs to use spacers. Great to know that’s unnecessary as long as the holes are clean.
Do you have a video or stand alone picture of the stand you made to hold your trike while working on it? My husband needs this!!!
Thanks for the enquiry, yes I do have a video on the stand I made, here is the link. th-cam.com/video/t2l1FJIy-tA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eFDjPrkWVqY9RrIE
