Unfortunately Graham's racism was held by many Christians as well as his antisemitism.
I was a teenager then and I remember my father saying "if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile." But he claimed he wasn't racist.
I was like 14 or 15 and I knew it was unfair.
But my father's attitude was what many white men thought about the civil rights movement.
At the time it was confounding to me that America could make the claims about being a free society and yet not let a man sit down and eat his lunch in peace.

Back in the mid 2000’s, I found myself in Indiana for a few weeks for work, stuck in a rental apartment with only local TV. Three of the local stations would just play religious stuff late at night. I was amazed to come across these old black and white Billy Graham sermons… man was breathing straight fire and brimstone back in those days. What an amazingly unlikeable character he was.

At least father Damien tried to help people. He worked with the leper community in Hawaii and ended up contacting the disease himself. He treated the people there with more respect than they had been before. He ate with them, wasn't afraid to be near them and treated them as human beings. He's become the unofficial saint of people who have HIV. I'm not sure Billy Graham helped anyone.

I remember back in February 2018 when Graham passed away, the central public library in Beaumont, Texas (where I still work at) put up a display of books from Billy Graham in his honor, decorated with several quotes and photos from him. The following month in March when famed physicist Stephen Hawking passed away, for whatever reason my library's staff did NOT do a display of his books. I live in a somewhat conservative/bible belt city, and my work supervisor at the time was a proud evangelical, so I was not surprised that my staff opted to honor a terrible, homophobic preacher instead of one of the most brilliant scientific minds ever. It did make me pretty sad and disappointed, and I kinda wish I could go back in time 6 years ago to convince my library's staff to do an equal display for Hawking as well. But yeah....this is Texas, it's run by book-banning, Bible-loving, migrant-hating extremists and getting worse.

That tells you a lot about how prominent this National Statuary Hall is in the state (and probably national) consciousness. And as we approach the 2024 election that will determine whether we remain a democracy or not, the fact that we have a bigot representing our state in this venue few people know exist strikes me as pretty low down the priority list. I mean, I'm pretty sure lots of states' statues in the NSH represent people who were pretty awful by modern standards.

He was definitely an anti-Semite and a racist. Read his unauthorized biography , "The Prince of War," by Cecil Bothwell. He held undue influence with Nixon and other Republican administrations, where he inveigled himself into a unelected advisory positions, and he helped to extend the Vietnam War - which needlessly killed thousands of U.S. soldiers. He does not belong in Statuary Hall. Period!

I went to the BillyGrahamLand show in Charlotte. Wanted to piss on his grave, which is the first part of the show. That is followed by going into a small barn to show his humble beginnings...which leads into a HUGE pavillion showing his rise to fame and glory. leading to a chapel area where a recording is supposed to make you want to make you "want to be saved! (tm)" ...but not from the gift and book shop plus restaurant outside. The whole thing was designed the same as any Universal or Disney ride.

At 6:48 he says (about Billy Graham) "He obviously thought that everyone who disagreed with his theology was going to burn in Hell for eternity" ------>
But that's not actually true! Now, I'm no fan of Billy Graham. And I do not follow ANY of the world's standard religious doctrines. But Billy Graham (as far back as the 1990s, anyway, was clear that he did NOT believe people of other faiths, or even those with no religious faith, will be damned by God.
He made that clear back in in 1997, during an interview with the TV evangelist Robert Schuller, Graham no less. And it earned him a LOT of flack from many evangelical Christians.
    Here's what Graham said.
"I think that everybody that loves or knows Christ, whether they are conscious of it or not, they are members of the body of Christ ... [God] is calling people out of the world for his name, whether they come from the Muslim world, or the Buddhist world or the non-believing world, they are members of the Body of Christ because they have been called by God. They may not know the name of Jesus but they know in their hearts that they need something they do not have, and they turn to the only light they have, and I think that they are saved and they are going to be with us in heaven."
So I guess this actually includes people like myself. Which is rather nice!
However, I wonder if Mike Johnson (committed Christian Nationalist as he is) is aware of Graham's stance on this interpretation of who is 'saved'.
