  • It happens every day in every city across the nation and around the world. Tree workers that don't know what they are doing or why they are doing it are causing damage. Trees are being destroyed and the ONLY way it can possibly stop, is through education. Help me. Spread the word. forward my videos on social media. SAVE OUR TREES!

These kind of things happen all the time. I see this a lot here in germany. Some homeowners are just arguing that their tree is to tall. I always wonder, to tall for what? It`s just growing in its normal form and shape, don`t top it or you will create a never ending "costruction site". You can teach some owners but some won`t give a damn. They just want you to shorten the tree, no matter what.

Yes its so stupid. Most trees react to topping by shooting up several leaders that grow twice as fast and also have more tendancy to break and fall down. Its also a open door for fungi to attack the tree shorting its life. And maybe most important of all the tree looks like shit.

    From the city Arborist
I went to the property and spoke to both the contractor and the owner. A photo of the tree is attached.
The contractor was operating without a license to work in Saratoga, and came in this morning to apply for a business license. Lori was unable to take in the application because the contractor did not have workman’s compensation insurance. The contractor left with an understanding that he needs to obtain a workman’s compensation policy in order to work in Saratoga.
The owner was given an application for a permit after the fact. He said that he was responding to a letter from the fire department that said his redwood was touching his roof and needed to be pruned away from it. I’ve asked for a copy of the letter. He has come in to apply for a permit after the fact. His conditions on the permit are to put a security deposit on the tree for one year in the amount of $4,150, and to have an ISA-certified arborist evaluate his tree and provide conditions of approval. The owner will provide me with the recommendations and I will determine his mitigation protocol.
I explained to both the owner and the contractor Saratoga’s rules for tree pruning in the city.

Are you saying that the home owner has to get permission from the city to have work done on his or her tree? Say you want to add on to your house and a 100ft redwood is in the way at that point do you have to get approval from the city to remove it?

I most strongly suggest to all owners of any tree(s) of importance to themselves, that they NEVER ALLOW any pruning of any kind to be done to those tree(s), without their direct personal or that of a knowledgeable and most trusted person's supervision; and this CANNOT be anyone from the company doing the work.
My story: After several difficult but ultimately satisfactory, yearly professional pruning sessions, (I did several smaller prunings in between), disaster befell my beloved 2 Brazilian Pepper, (shade for the house), trees - Schinus Terebinthifolia. Alas, important legal family documents with eastern family members were being finalized via email, and time was short. We "spoke the same language", so I felt comfortable in going back inside. They quietly lowered most wood to the ground. When I was able to break free and go back outside - "What the Fffiretruck!!!" went through my mind! All the years of careful "grooming" of these 2 trees to look natural, plus their copious south side and south rooftop shade were gone!!! The 2 trees were "lolly-popped"; almost "lion tailed", and would not provide vital shade for over 18 months. Now, 2 years later, the trees are woven with water sprouts and long narrow, near vertically hanging, weak branches. With physical restraint and mental caution, on relatively low windy days, I had no fear of climbing these trees in the past. They were grown to have strong branches next to the trunk and there, be climbable - not any more!

And even in Australia now I have homeowners terrified of trees. These same trees that provide shade and homes to endemic marsupials, birds etc etc as well as refuge from feral cats and foxes who place unbelievable pressure on native populations. Hacks should never be allowed to run a saw, spurs are for use on total removals ONLY, never ever on a live tree. Homeowners don't seem to get that the cheapest quote is usually that way for good reason, ask what they're willing to stand behind, who their insurers are and what their diploma/degree is and who did it, then do some google research at the very least, as I can guarantee that guys that will do work like that wont be there when your tree smashes through the neighbours roof!!
Again even in Australia I see stumps that where once trees, and reading that stump tells me no one had a clue how to even fall the dam thing.

  • @sir_urx
    @sir_urx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Seems the basic problem behind the issue is wrong type of tree. So they want to modify tree to be something else and tree fights back. The result is ugly. Another aspect there is that city laws forbid the removal of tree. So there is no way of getting rid of it and they fight until tree dies out. Maybe it's more wise to allow removal of too big tree and replacing it with suitable form or forbid also trimming if keeping it is very important.

I would like to have a consultation with you. I am very worried about several redwood trees in Palo alto. They look in bad shape. I believe half of their branches look death of extremely dry. I was told it could be that they need more water. Redwood trees need high humidity to provide their own water needs or large roots to get it from the soil (deep parts of the ground). I want.to do anything in my hands to rescue those trees.

I have a bunch of redwoods on my property and about 8 of them are right up to the fence. I've seen companies trim the branches of the bottom pretty high up. It seems common sense to me to trim the lower branches just above the fence off so they do not damage the fence or my house. I have 4 that are going to cover my pool in complete shade. Is it bad to top them so they dont grow too large? what damage is done by topping. I have one redwood tree that my citie's power company topped because it was going straight into the power lines.

Wouldn't that go against everything in any pruning manual? Seems like that would be more than 1/3rd of the trees crown, which I would consider improper practice, hence the city should penalize both home owner and the hacks that did it! Even in a small town that I live in up in Maine, towns are starting to hammer landowners and companies...

People do odd things thinking it looks good then ask how to fix it when it ether kills the tree or the city tells them to fix it.
One of the houses I pass they cut back a tree so hard so often it has round growths of scar tissue from where they cut it year after year. They think the tree looks great but all I see is a 30-40 year old tree in the desert that they are starving as they cut its limbs off.

I would rather a tree company destroy a tree and do it safely instead of a home owner doing it on their own whilst having no proper training or safety equipment. I could see a lot of home owners trying to trim their own trees if tree company's were enforced to abide by ISA standards.
