  • In 1942 Edna Brice was 17 years old and was called up to serve her country. She joined the WRNS on her 18th birthday and served near the Naval Dockyard in Kent. Her husband was a soldier, and after he died she came to live at our Ovingdean centre in Brighton.

    5:25 My grandad (John Joseph Folan) was a stoker in the Navy during the war. He was born in western Ireland and was very much working-class and I suspect at least one of those things was true of all of them, hence why they got paid less for doing more work.
