I'm sitting here in Michigan with my hat on and wrapped up in my blanket watching these videos on camping and ran across your video which is very informative but also entertaining.. Cold weather camping is amazing and a must try if you've never done it before.. God bless and thank you
I used to fish a lot at night. I would heat stones by the fire and then put them in my pockets. Bigger the stone the longer it stays warm. Don't use flint
Good video. One addition. I camped last weekend. Small tent, but I laid a towel over the vent then put on the fly. Drastically cut down on warm air loss while allowing some ventilation. Stopped the wind. It works. You can even add a cheap, thin tarp under the towel. I’ve never had a problem with moisture as I always unzip a window an inch. Go camping!!!
I feel very stupid that it didn't occur to me to simply unzip the top of the window. I have the big agnus bunk house 6 man tent and the big gripe with this tent is there are no vents. But there are huge vestibules on both doors. That's an easy fix...

😂😂 That's hilarious, but you should go camping! It's super fun if you bring friends that you love spending time with. And all food tastes AMAZING from the campfire.
I've only really-cold-camped once. I checked maybe half of these points, so I didn't die, but I wasn't especially warm in the night either. I had the weirdest dreams of my life on the coldest (first) night! If I ever camp in conditions like that again, I'll be much better prepared! 😁
To add to that, add a bivy bag/emergency blanket around your sleeping bag, Also, I personally found that consuming lots of animal fat helps the body with fuel for staying warm. And be sure to wear a neck warmer in addition to head cover.
I do appreciate videos like these. Every winter I include watching prep videos as part of shtf and I'm stuck in a remote area to survive. I include non perishable food like boxes of packs of tuna or homeeee made beef jerky that's been cured and prepped for an unfortunate winter "oh shit" situation.
I prefer sleeping in minimal layers when winter camping. I tend to sweat in my sleep if I’m wearing more than a base layer. Makes for a miserable next day if I don’t have dry clothes to change into.
The rating on the sleeping bag means it will keep you alive at that temp, not warm. I learned that lesson the hard way. We love to bring our big wool blanket with us, fold it in half and sandwich our sleeping pads inside them. Helps insulate and stops them from sliding around throughout the night. And for sitting around the campfire before bed, I highly recommend bringing a snuggly doggo to sit in your lap and keep you warn.
I recently slept outside to raise money for the Covenant House which provides housing and services to youth experiencing homelessness. I was in my 30F bag with my sleeping bag and lots of layers and it was so hard to stay asleep through the night. Just a reminder that we are so lucky to have these camping privileges but many do not! If you see this, donate to your local homeless shelter to help keep someone housed this holiday season. :-)
The temp on a bag is what it will keep you alive not warm it’s good to have another way to stay warm poncho liners work well and there’s some other great things as well ti double up in the bag also want to sleep in the most minimal amount of clothing since your body radiates heat so if you put on a million layers your bag won’t warm up right and putting a warm bottle is a bad idea since it will sweat and cause moisture in the bag it’s also great to leave your clothes and other items you will have on you in the base of the bag to keep them warm as well
Great little ad. My 3 main tricks for staying warm (in addition to what McKenzie says): 1) loose-fitting smart wool socks; 2) 2 disposal handwarmers. I throw one down by my feet, and one on my upper body. Must not let touch skin directly, but those really help-especially the foot one. 3) If I’m car camping, a Buddy heater.
We snow camped in Alaska many times over 30 years while living there. We wore balaclavas to keep our faces warm. I also cut and taped Reflectix (Mylar coated bubble wrap insulation) for our tent floor footprint. That went under our pads. Air mattresses are super cold, as she said. Using foam and blankets between you and your air mattress is helpful. If it’s super cold I would consider a Mylar emergency blanket on top of the air mattress, then foam, then a blanket. I also made water bottle cozies using Reflectix and duct tape. It kept the water from freezing overnight. Have a high calorie, high fat snack before bed to help you make energy to stay warm. Wool and synthetics keep you warm when wet. “Cotton kills” was the byline in Alaska. Any moisture and cotton acts as a swamp cooler keeping the cold next to your skin. Down doesn’t keep you warm when wet either. So if you have a down bag, make sure to turn it inside out and let your accumulated body moisture dry out during the day. If it’s super cold you can let it freeze inside out then shake off the ice.
Yep. None of these people have even tried using an air mattress in freezing temperatures. If they think an air mattress is going to be nice and pliable to inflate they got another thing comin. 😆 🤣
Also take a pee bottle or a coffee can in the tent so you can empty your bladder when nature calls. A full bladder robs your body of the heat that it takes to keep it warm as long as you hold it. Go as soon as you have the urge so you can use the calories to keep yourself warm.
Noooo winter tent camping for me... but we do start camping in May/June and finish up in Sept./Oct., which can get quite chilly at night! Thx for sharing your tips! 👍🇨🇦
I bought what said 11 person tent 7' tall and sets up in 90 seconds just for myself lol. Plus my 22" tall queen size air mattress. Never had a problem.
Yes l.l.Bean is 1 outdoors company for all your outdoor clothing rugged camp hiking work , and much much more thank you for standing beside your name and standards
I'm used to camping out in the snow and I love it but I got a kiddo now and I got to think about that too so I got to keep them warm I can't do too much camping in the snow no more
I live in a tent that is based upon a pallet base in my backyard. I have an extension cord and a little space heater to use when it gets to cold. I wrapped the inner layer of the tent in Mylar emergency sleeping bags . I’ve been sleeping in it for 14 months and I don’t think I am go back to living in a house as well.
And never leave a cooler full of food outside. Last time I was camping just south of Yosemite, and left the cooler on the picnic table. I woke up the next morning to find that a bear had knocked the cooler down, and helped itself to a pound of butter, and a pound of bacon! Something spooked the bear, and it ran through the campsites, with the only casualty (besides the food) was our neighbor's lawn chair, that looked like it was run over by a truck!
Love your videos❤❤❤great information and love the instructions with a sense of humor 😂😂. I usually get bored wirh instructions, but this is tge 2nd one that I've watched and learned a few things
Thanks for the tips. It's 40, windy & rainy. I used the hot water bottle trick for toasty toes. My sleeping bag liner was over a year old (I've been full time traveling for over a year) and just ordered a new one. The exact one you show. So tonight I'm wrapped up in two liners. Next step is a new sleeping bag. Something you didn't mention that I always have are Smart Wool socks for cold nights. Not to be fresh, you look like you would be fun to camp with, but I don't know about the dance moves, definitely in for the some mores though. Fun video and adding it to my playlist.
Keep a large plastic convenience store cup with lid around for middle of night peeing. It is flexible/fits close to body. Can squat over it away from the mattress Cover. Dispose of contents in AM. I made this discovery when I was stuck in a tent during a heavy storm.
I used to put on a sweatshirt with my face through the neck, then tie the sleeves under my chin. This made a hat that also covered my neck and shoulders. A quick "hat" when you're trying to sleep.
Absolutely never sleep in layers sleep naked or as close to as possible in a good sleeping bag, put tomorrow's clothes under your bag you will be colder the next morning if you sleep in your clothes. Layer your sleep system. Always have clean dry socks and extra clean dry socks. If you have a significant other even better two naked or mostly naked bodies in one bag is gonna be warmer and is the recommended way to warm someone up close to hypothermia if other methods are unavailable.
After years of cold winter I learned one technique that always worked. Pack sandals and a bathing suit, GO TO Florida or islands!! Camp by the beach! Always better!
I grew up camping in a colder environment. I made the mistake of trusting that my husband understood we were going camping (our first camping trip together) in a cold environment when he offered to pack the sleeping gear. We get there only to discover he didn’t own a sleeping bag, as I had assumed and he only brought our typical blanket from the house. It was far too cold for that mess and we ended up sleeping in our car having to intermittently wake up, run the car for maybe ten minutes to warm it up, then turn it off again. What a mess! Now we have really great cold rated sleeping bags and even our air up mattress (super comfy despite not being super thick) has the coldest rating available for a sleep mattress. Definitely not making that mistake again 🤣
Omg love it I miss the winter camp with boy scouts in the woods all ways had one kid who would wake us up at 2:30 so we got a fire going to warm.up and all the other would be out cold and of course one leader leaving the front fly open so I was freezing and could not figure out why till I woke u
Layered clothing. Don't over exert to the point of sweating. Remove layers as necessary to prevent sweating. Wear long underwear to bed including cotton and wool socks. Bag should have hood and drawstring.. The most important thing is a sleeping bag rated warmer than expected air temps. Critical! Unlace your boots and open up wide before bed so you can get your feet back into them in the morning when temps are below freezing. Condensation in them will freeze them overnight otherwise and may be difficult to get your feet into them in the morning.
I make a lean-to with cardboard and spray vegetable oil over top. The rest is just preserving my body heat. Stay off the direct ground and keep the wind out.
I know this is an ad but I actually really enjoyed this and found it really informative. The presenter is also really clear and nice.
Thank you.
You state it Better than me!
I concur
Ikr, it's not obnoxiously loud or intrusive at all, I originally thought it was a video lol. Why can't all ads be like this 👍
She’s adorable

Wow this presenter is so good at her job. Really funny and creative. I watched this entire video even though i am not going to camp.

Oh my gosh, she is so great! Make more videos with her, loved the camping hacks!
Ok she is the best- we need more from her! :)
Wow, do I disagree.
Itm, don't wrap yourself in an polyester blanket next to an open fvre.
🔥🦊🚬I dare you to heart that.
The best sound in the world, to me, a tent Zipper being opened or closed

When people are stressed or have anxiety they often have odd dreams
The beanee hat is most important in cold weather !
To add to that, add a bivy bag/emergency blanket around your sleeping bag,
Also, I personally found that consuming lots of animal fat helps the body with fuel for staying warm.
And be sure to wear a neck warmer in addition to head cover.
I love camping in the cold
So fun. More videos with this lady. She had me cracking up. I've never heard that smaller tent trick. Great tips!
Public comment. Wonderful job helping humanity show they everything they need to know to enjoy life. Thank you so much.

Some people need to know these things for practical reasons, in today’s economy!
Mackenzie is amazing!

Heated jackets come in handy during cold weather camping also!
That's the wimpiest thing I've ever heard....
Lol 😂
Yeah, great idea, rely on batteries when there’s no way to recharge them.

Yeah, that buddy heater in the tent works really good if you want to die in your sleep from c.o. poisoning. NOT!

Should’ve mentioned comfort rating vs survival rating of sleeping bags.
She basically did without saying it. The "colder rated bag than the actual temperature" part was basically referring to that.
Enjoy ❤❤❤
Haha the second video from you. Funny as the kayak video. Ok i will follow :-D

Keeping feet warm in sleeping bag ,it's pre rating bag used to be good it's down filled.
The bottle one mademe laugh cause I was thinking of a hot watter bottle right before it came up.
Great My Friends
Thank you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Don't forget sleeping bag. I did
Get a winter bag
Great tips
Cold weather camping is the same as warm weather camping exept you sleep with your clothes on.
I make a lean-to with cardboard and spray vegetable oil over top. The rest is just preserving my body heat. Stay off the direct ground and keep the wind out.
I assume you use corrugated cardboard?
@@SoulDevoured yeah partly because it's a good cushion and partly for it's insulating properties.
Great basic tips. I have that Anorak jacket. Great piece of kit. Perfect protection from the elements and layers well.
She’s awesome !
Fill up your ten gallon fuel tank, inspect brake’s, thouroughly, for wear, and damage, both front and rear brake systems.
You can always get a hot tent with a tent stove
I wish this was a real video instead of an ad so I could save it lol
