Hemlock Springs suddenly became one of my favourite artists and I can't get enough of her
Her DellaOXZ and Willow are unstoppable tbhh🫶🏾🫶🏾
Like FR FR!!!
SAME
Yes
FR FR!!
Holy fuck the animated backgrounds are amazing, the whole music video direction too, it matches so well with the vibe of the song too
RIGHT!
it's like a fantastical version of take on me
Lyric:
Where were you my lady?
I've been in the basement
She tied up my ankles
As a mere defacement
It's so charming, charming
He'll find a replacement for me
He wondered what I liked
I see the flowers in his hands
Bluebells and dahlias
Tied with a white ribbon
They are my favorite
I heave a sighing breath
Hah, hah, hah, hah love is miles away
Will I still wait here for you?
It will get cold in the dark
With those listless days at bay
And the pain, I'll always hide
But the hurt, well dare I say it?
So loathesome
Who said I was a fool?
To think in ways so grand?
You see, I'm no Snow White
The fairest of our land
I heave that sighing breath, my cavity expands
Hah, hah, hah, hah love is miles away
Will I still wait here?
Hah hah, hah, hah my heart is yours to take
But I'll still wait here for you
It will get cold in the dark
With those listless days at bay
And the pain, I'll always hide
But the hurt, well dare I find?
Love is miles away
But I'll still wait here for you
Hah, hah, hah, hah love is miles away
Will I still wait here for you?
Thank you!
TYSM
Thank youu!!!
These lyrics are fucking amazing. Hemlocke is a wordsmith
I LOVE
As a Black Renaissance re-enactor I heartily heart this and give Milady Hemlocke a rousing huzzah! I love her voice, like a modern Kate Bush mixed with Lene Lovitch and a dash of Dale Bozzio (lead singer for Missing Persons).
OMG I LOVE those references!! YESS no wonder I love Hemlocke
Well met good sir and heartily agreed!❤
Even got the Wuthering Heights red riding cape and sweet moves.
Huzzah!
So over delighted to see a black artist do her own thing and dominate her own lane with such original ideas and songwriting. Nobody I can think of earns my respect, whether or not the songs fit my taste, it’s so exciting so see this brand of music making strike a chord with people - literally! 😄
It's so refreshing too.
You ever hear of Kara Jackson, buddy?
Except it’s basically Kate Bush combined with any modern “alt” singer songwriter
@@lewiscarrington1777 oh buddy wait until you listen to other music!
I honestly thought she was white when I first heard her 😂
i can already see such a good brand for her. she's nerdy and theatrical and she's dipping into those themes like renaissance, kingdoms, hecklocke grove, fantasy and dungeons. its dope.
She's really meant to do this! Can we talk about the diversity in style in her music though?! We will never get bored!
This video reminded me so much of Kate Bush and Bjork. All so talented and creative and I can definitely see Hemlocke being one of the greatest artists of our generation.
Yes!!!
Is it not, 'cultural appropriation'?
@@Scotty-P I will eat your soul
Something about hemlocke springs' aesthetic just reminds me of me and my geeky friends running around with our camecorders and taking weird Polaroids in the 00s. It embraces being weird and having "low production values" but compensated with awesome creative vision. Her bops are always catchy too. Huge fan and excited to see where her career goes.
Yea! Hemlocke Springs gives me early 2000s indie sleaze vibes. Before music videos were only about showing off riches, and actually had character to them! There were so many “low production” music vids in the early 2000s that are iconic because they showed off the artists’ creative talent instead of flaunting money.
There's the good comment I was looking for
Kate Bush would be proud.
Hell yes. Beginning is giving Wuthering Heights vibes.
I literally just realized she was waiting on the girl to save her, not the king 😭 I was so distracted by the vocals when I first saw this lmaoo
I need an entire album with this story line
Totally agree, an aesthetic
I hope her next album includes this song since going going gone had Girlfriend!
Like a runaway type short film album ting omggggg
Asap
SAME!!! I've been patiently and desperately awaiting some sequel songs
THIS WAS SO BEAUTIFUL!! GREAT JOB TO HEMLOCKE, ALL OF THE ACTORS, AND ANYONE ELSE ON THE TEAM!! LOCKETS RISE! ⚔️🌠💫
is that our fandom name!? :D
okay lockets is a really cute name
This 80s beat with the story-esque music video is absolutely what I NEEDED. I LOVE THIS.
Holy fuck I came here because I've heard Chappell Roan talking about her in a podcast and I'm loving every second
Same. This hits the spot for my love of 80s electro-pop. Heavenly.

P.S. this kind of reminds me of old mew (frengers album specifically, not quite friends not quite strangers) 💕
Though not quite..! This is so unique nothing is like it exactly!!! I’d love other recommended bands here 🤗
Thank you, this song has been in my head for the past week.
@@tessarae9127 omg you know mew? 🇩🇰 This does totally resemble their older work. Her vocals also sound a lot like those of mews lead singer 🙌🏽
@@lineavictoria2631 yessss omg they were my favorite when I was in high school 🥰 and ofc an all time favorite group of mine!!!
Why THANK YOU 😉
Hemlock has gone 3/3. Her melodies, storytelling and visuals are so great. Truly a breath of fresh air rn. Truly magical.
This is giving me Kate bush vibes! Though they're their own unique thing, this track is going in rotation for sure! ❤
I WAS JUST THINKING KATE BUSH
I was looking this comment! I LOVE it!
This would make an excellent karaoke song
Yes!!!! Same thought - hauntingly beautiful
YES IT IS SOOOOO KATE BUSH! THE VISUALS AND AUDIO
it’s incredible how you can perfectly recreate this very particular 80s sound, it could’ve been released at that time! Contrary to more mainstream artists who want to recreate the 80s vibe but always feel less authentic!
Keep going Hemlocke, you’re doing amazing ❤️
I love when people don’t make the music people are expecting them to make. This music is like fairy tale vibes and I am here for it 100%. I’m certain you’re inspiring other young people to do what they want in spite of other people’s opinions. I don’t think this music even has a genre yet. lol it reminds me of 80s pop. It’s so good.
Kate Bush for sure
This song, the way it builds, the beautiful artwork, the sapphic undertones... God, I am so fucking enthralled. Every single time I rewatch this video I find more to love about it and more about the song that draws me in for another listen. I genuinely can't explain how beautiful this whole project is.
these are sapphic OVERTONES!!! IT IS SATURATED WITH SAPHO’S SPIRIT!!!!!!!
I feel the exact same way! The timing of the shots with the music is so delicious, the queerness, the intrigue, it all hits.
Simply perfect, I love how her songs sound so unique and original but also familiar and nostalgic!
Couldn't have said it better
As I started listening to the song I was hearing Kate Bush and as it went on I found her own unique aura
@@mehrdadfarzan9271same for me! Super cool artist!
Yesss!!!
It reminds me of Kate Bush mixed with the electronic dance remixes that were popular on AMVs....
Hemlocke, this is the best new music I've heard in years. And I'm over 50 year old, a musician myself, and listening to many genres from electronica through progressive rock/metal all the way to modern jazz. You have some amazing talent, heart, and you're beating all current money-driven artists by far. Just keep doing what you're doing, please!
Exactly my thoughts lol. Spotify randomly started playing this today and I immediately thought that this is one of the best and most timeless pieces of music I have ever heard and how I had not heard this before
Facts ❤
Song of the year for me. Elder goth. Respect!😊
@@dharmalemonlime Seems it appeals to goths a lot! :D I've considered myself a goth for many years, too and still go to goth festivals :D
The anticipation I have for any release by her is UNMATCHED, so excited
This is so wonderfully refreshing omg. It's fun, it's pop, it's artistic, it's layered, it's retro. She is absolutely one to watch. Such talent right out the gate omg
I'm honestly in love with this song for capturing the fantasy/medieval feel. I heard it first without seeing the video and thought the melody in the chorus sounded a little medieval, and turns out the video is that way too! This is on repeat right now and I can't get enough. Well done!
Shut up lil nga 💀
the chorus.. the visuals.. this scratches an itch i didn't even know i had. the absurdly peaceful discomfort of the video. the exuberant fantasy. it's everything i love. swordfight. wine. war. abstract allegory. aaarrhdhdh
This might be your best track yet, but I guess I've thought that every time. Fantastic work.
Ikr it just getting better and better!
After only 5 months Hemlocke Springs has solidified herself into my top 5 favourite artists, she is so damn fun and talented!!! Another banger for the playlists
You are literally one of the most iconic, interesting, cool, and beautiful people to ever grace the planet lol it's so weird
I see you everywhere! Lol we must have similar tastes
I get so excited when I see Black artists in such unique genres! This is such a vibe!
not the compliment you think it is
@@nofapobamaIt isn't a compliment to feel happy about Black artists expanding into different genres of music?
@@etoileshine1011 in a world where white artists can branch into any genre without the "such unique genres" rhetoric - no. This kind of rhetoric is quite damaging societally and ultimately on the artist's overall output
@@nofapobama I don't think Hemlocke would mind this comment and besides it's nice to see a Black person who makes Alt music since it's not a popular genre choice.
@@etoileshine1011 through work I happen to know a lot of black artists who make a similar style of music to Hemlocke, some quite notable and they hate the constant comparisons and laser-focus of their race within a certain genre in comparison to their artistry. There's also a reason why you constantly read or hear about black artists in the metal genre (and beyond) who are very vocal about their distate of these comparisons. I'm not sure why you'd assume Hemlocke is any different? That's ignoring the fact that it's just a generally distasteful thing to do.
Girl, you are IT. One to watch. Obsessed with the aesthetic and sound. From the 00s bubbly Computer Graphics to 80s Renaissance Opulence LARPing mixed with just out-there vocals. Never change.
Amazing song and a fantastic video giving that playful Little Dark Age, Invisible Light, and Green Knight use of 70s style camera and gothic medieval debauchery
CRYING, CHOKING, STIMMING THE HOUSE DOWN. This song is EVERYTHING 🥹🫶✨
'stimming the house down' i love that lol♾
YES
I too am stimming the house down
STIMMING THE HOUSE DOWNNNNNNN
Upset that none of her other songs really match the aesthetic of this song and if we had an entire album with THIS vibe I’d probably die
That's kind of the point of variety
Im happy Chappell brought me here 🖤
keep coming back!
Grimes found jobless and bald
The song is 2:54 minutes long but it took me 10 minutes because I kept rewinding every few seconds.
Her songs always get me in such a good mood... they don't sound like music that is strictly trying to be "good music", she just wants to sing and say something, and she does that. They sound like passion projects. They have soul and personality. I love them.
You must have put crack, fent, heroin, and every other drug into this song because I can't stop singing it 😩
I accidentally stumbled upon this Earth Angel. ❤😂
Came because of chappel roan and ur my favourite artist's favourite artist

THIS SONG IS SO GOOD! THE VIBES, THE VOCALS, EVERYTHING ABT IT IS AMAZING!
Hemlocke is taking me on an epic quest. First she summons Kate Bush then twists it into a 80s synth pop renaissance piece. Brilliant, love her. Every song is a nod to the past but truly original at the same time. Love
most of those views are from me tbh 😅
Was introduced to hemlocke Springs a few days ago and this is my favorite song so far, REALLY digging it. Like a new Kate Bush!
One day I will get my own tv show based off of my book series and pay this beautiful soul a million and see some more just to sing. She gives me hope that I too can achieve my dreams as a black nerdy fantasy loving person.
I’m so excited to see her trajectory and can’t wait for when she finally has an album out!
omg my body’s not ready for a full album
nobody talk to me when hemlocke puts out a full album. i'll be too busy listening to every song 400 times
@supermouse73 LMFAO 💀 no but same
the hemlocke springification of the medieval times
hi!! your comments during the premiere were super sweet and made me so happy!
I'm completely stricken
Is there a 1hr loop somewhere please help its my new hyperfixation
HEMLOCKE SPRINGS YOU WILL BE BIG
This is the different type of music I’ve been looking for. Finally!!
Found this a year after release... and it's giving me life!
This track is as hot as a dragon's breath. Dope beat hits like a raging barbarian. The lyrics slap like a damsel who's tired of being in distress. Turning this song up for my merry men.
So my interpretation of the story is that the king had been married to the woman in red but got tired of her and locked her away because she's "no snow white" ie he found someone prettier. Then the new wife (the waman in white) fonds out and kills him and goes to free the woman in red.
OH MY GOD IT'S COMING
Omfg im so happy she took the demo and made it a song, like im 💃 rn
Bluebells and dahlias are poisonous, particularly bluebells to humans in large quantities. The antagonist poisoned the family using the same ingredient. The protagonist recalls the scent from a past memory, and knows what's about to happen.
Im not clear if the red-headed protagonist that Hemlocke portrays is intended to be the same man mentioned earlier in the song, or if it's a sapphic line just recalling a nostalgic memory, and the idea of him finding a replacement is just a way to lean into the portrayal of the protagonist and the heroine in the dungeon as love interests, but an old memory reminds them of the poisonous scent.
Hemlocke playing both characters could also just be a form of duality someone experiences when they're betrayed. The revenger and the revenged, the hero and the victim. The betrayal occurs from the same person, the current wife.
Anyway, love the song!! Love the throwback of the music video as well, very A-ha!!!
adding this to my “what you know about this?” playlist so my future self can blast it in 20 years to change the lives of the uncultured
I love this 😂 I need to start one too
Wow this came up as a recommended vid and I'm so glad! It's amazing!
Same for me! I'm obsessed now
Her wearing the red cloak turning around to look at the person who opened the door; thats an album cover right there
Live laugh love Hemlocke Springs
já é cedo pra pedir pra Hemlocke Springs vir pro Brasil??? venha!
Nunca é cedo
querooooooooooo
Ugh I loved this video so much and the song is MWAH magical and moody and marvelous-can't wait to hear more from her soon!
holy shit this is so fucking good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm literally the biggest sever the blight enjoyer you do NAWT understand this song is so serious to me
YES. YEEEESSSS!!!! Thumbnail alone looks sick! Omg shaking quaking throwing up 😳
The deep synthesizer swell right before the percussion section kicks in is just so great. It sounds like a pipe organ, it's dramatic and it swells with such power. It's so authoritative! Fantastic sound. I knew from the moment it hit that section that I was going to wring this song out for every drop of serotonin in it!
I've literally been so obsessed with this song ever since it came out, its so good 😭 definately my favorite by her
So it's nobody gonna talk about how eurovision this is?
No we're not gonna because it doesn't lol
Please make more music! I really love this a lot. Please!
1:10 anyone else got flashbacks to the blue/gold dress debate?
her voice is so angelic in this song, I am so obssessed!! And i love that the music video give MGMT Little Dark Age vibes
doja cat
I love her style so much, the melodies in this song have me in a trance.
here cuz of doja
Looking at the lyrics vs. the video - the lyrics seem to tell a story about a jealous woman (Lady Lyria) tying up her lover's mistress (?) in the basement "She tied up my ankles as a near defacement". But the video turns that on its head - instead - Lady Lyria, the wife of this royal man (The Aristocrat) seems to come to the rescue of the woman trapped in the basement at the end of the video. Instead of this idea of a woman punishing her husband's mistress out of jealousy (common trope) - we see this idea of the Lady Lyria punishing the person who had the most power in the situation - the Aristocrat. It's entirely possible that the situation isn't what it appears to be, that the "mistress" was never actually into the Aristocrat, or that even Lady Lyria's heart belonged to the supposed "mistress" all along (Lady Lyria fought against the Aristocrat in a sword battle and won, and the Aristocrat was not at all surprised when she tried to poison him). I love that there's a couple different possibilities from that - but the idea that Lady Lyria was in an unhappy marriage with a cruel Aristocrat who locked the person she truly loved up in the basement (They're both seen singing the line "Love is miles away, but I'll still wait here for you") is my favorite.
Add that to the 80s synth and the effects of the video and you get this lovely, dreamy sort of video. 10/10.
The Black Kate Bush. A natural inheritor of the mantle. Story telling and adventurous delivery. Wonderful.
Simply one of the best songs
The quality of these music videos just get better and better without compromising the original tone and spirit of your older ones. They compliment your voice so well and the general vibe seems very unique and personal to your own personality. Can't wait to see what you do next!
"Who said I was a fool? To think in ways so grand?" So simple yet speaks volumes for our generation
genuinely this is one of the most beautiful music videos I’ve seen. Your music, artistry and vision are incredible I love you hemlocke 💕
EATTTTTTTTTT
But don't drink 😉
this is the catchiest and loveliest hook I've heard in ages 😍
Kate Bush collab when
this really had a kate bush/joanna newsom vibe to it... hope she will lean into that kind of sound more in the future!
Crazy that all of these videos were from the same director, they really stepped up their game so much each and every time!
Obsessed with this song showed my dumb boyfriend he said he didn’t know Kristen Schaal could sing. We broke up.
came from doja’s tweet. you’re so talented 💞
Him: Where are you Lady?
Me: I'VE BEEN IN THE BASEMENT 🗣🗣🗣🗣
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS SONG/MUSIC VIDEO IS REAL? THIS IS THE BEST THING IVE HEARD IN FKN AGES
It is. It’s on iTunes.
This would’ve been a top 10 hit in the 80s
with country and rock being stereotyped as 'white music' and rap being stereotyped as 'black music', THIIIIIISSSSSSS is why I keep telling people to expand their horizons. So much music, made by ALLL KINDSSS of artists, so much to be appreciated in this world if we all could just STOP seeing color and putting music, entertainment, and OURSELVES into boxes. THIS is talent....no matter how you cut, slice, or dice it...and that's a FACT!! I just found this video in my recommended, and I'll be sharing this, and Tanner Adell (please go check her out if you like country music) all over the place, to all my friends. Music is its own language and is universal. Never limit yourself to a genre...give something new a chance, and you just might be pleasantly surprised...I know I am.
The music industry has long boxed artists into genres based on color. "Race records" were a real thing in the 1950's and sadly continues to this day. There are so many examples of Black artists pretty much railroaded into r&b/hip hop because the industry thinks that all Black people want to hear (not true by the way, lol). Thankfully the industry can't sustain itself the way it used to and independent artists like Hemlocke Springs are bypassing traditional means of releasing music which is great for all of us. Also, don't be so quick to judge folks. There are plenty of Black Paramore fans, lol. The seeing color part isn't the problem. We're all beautiful in our glorious hues. It's the judgy part that needs to go. Peace.
@@geminigrrl66 agreed!!! Couldn't have said it better myself ❤️ take care, lots of love to you and yours ☺️
Which is insane because black folks literally created rock music and originated country music as well. And techno and some other genres. So, I'm of the theory that, in 10-15 years time, we will become unwelcome in hip-hop and R&B as well if we keep letting ourselves be marginalized in the things we create.
No not on the radio, they’ll become mainstream 😭 call me selfish 😂
who's here after doja's tweet?
We love a medieval girlie. Can’t wait to see you sell out concerts and stadiums. ❤
as a hemlocke fan THANKS SO MUCH DOJA CAT for putting more ppl onto her music!!! she’s amazing and deserves all the love!
