    Lyric:
    Where were you my lady?
    I've been in the basement
    She tied up my ankles
    As a mere defacement
    It's so charming, charming
He'll find a replacement for me
    He wondered what I liked
I see the flowers in his hands
    Bluebells and dahlias
    Tied with a white ribbon
    They are my favorite
    I heave a sighing breath
Hah, hah, hah, hah love is miles away
Will I still wait here for you?
It will get cold in the dark
With those listless days at bay
And the pain, I'll always hide
But the hurt, well dare I say it?
    So loathesome
Who said I was a fool?
To think in ways so grand?
You see, I'm no Snow White
    The fairest of our land
I heave that sighing breath, my cavity expands
Hah, hah, hah, hah love is miles away
    Will I still wait here?
Hah hah, hah, hah my heart is yours to take
But I'll still wait here for you
It will get cold in the dark
With those listless days at bay
And the pain, I'll always hide
But the hurt, well dare I find?
    Love is miles away
But I'll still wait here for you
Hah, hah, hah, hah love is miles away
Will I still wait here for you?

As a Black Renaissance re-enactor I heartily heart this and give Milady Hemlocke a rousing huzzah! I love her voice, like a modern Kate Bush mixed with Lene Lovitch and a dash of Dale Bozzio (lead singer for Missing Persons).

Something about hemlocke springs' aesthetic just reminds me of me and my geeky friends running around with our camecorders and taking weird Polaroids in the 00s. It embraces being weird and having "low production values" but compensated with awesome creative vision. Her bops are always catchy too. Huge fan and excited to see where her career goes.

    • @asiajones5798
      @asiajones5798 ปีที่แล้ว +40

Yea! Hemlocke Springs gives me early 2000s indie sleaze vibes. Before music videos were only about showing off riches, and actually had character to them! There were so many “low production” music vids in the early 2000s that are iconic because they showed off the artists’ creative talent instead of flaunting money.

    The fairest of our land
    I heave a sighing breath
My cavity expands (ha, ha, ha, ha)
    Love is miles away
Will I still wait here? (Ha, ha, ha, ha)
My heart is yours to take
But I'll still wait here for you
It will get cold in the dark
But those listless stays at bay
And the pain I'll always hide
But the hurt, well, dare I?
    Love, love is miles away
But I'll still wait here for you
    Love is miles away
Will I still wait here for you?

Hemlocke is taking me on an epic quest. First she summons Kate Bush then twists it into a 80s synth pop renaissance piece. Brilliant, love her. Every song is a nod to the past but truly original at the same time. Love

So my interpretation of the story is that the king had been married to the woman in red but got tired of her and locked her away because she's "no snow white" ie he found someone prettier. Then the new wife (the waman in white) fonds out and kills him and goes to free the woman in red.

Bluebells and dahlias are poisonous, particularly bluebells to humans in large quantities. The antagonist poisoned the family using the same ingredient. The protagonist recalls the scent from a past memory, and knows what's about to happen.
Im not clear if the red-headed protagonist that Hemlocke portrays is intended to be the same man mentioned earlier in the song, or if it's a sapphic line just recalling a nostalgic memory, and the idea of him finding a replacement is just a way to lean into the portrayal of the protagonist and the heroine in the dungeon as love interests, but an old memory reminds them of the poisonous scent.
Hemlocke playing both characters could also just be a form of duality someone experiences when they're betrayed. The revenger and the revenged, the hero and the victim. The betrayal occurs from the same person, the current wife.
Anyway, love the song!! Love the throwback of the music video as well, very A-ha!!!

Looking at the lyrics vs. the video - the lyrics seem to tell a story about a jealous woman (Lady Lyria) tying up her lover's mistress (?) in the basement "She tied up my ankles as a near defacement". But the video turns that on its head - instead - Lady Lyria, the wife of this royal man (The Aristocrat) seems to come to the rescue of the woman trapped in the basement at the end of the video. Instead of this idea of a woman punishing her husband's mistress out of jealousy (common trope) - we see this idea of the Lady Lyria punishing the person who had the most power in the situation - the Aristocrat. It's entirely possible that the situation isn't what it appears to be, that the "mistress" was never actually into the Aristocrat, or that even Lady Lyria's heart belonged to the supposed "mistress" all along (Lady Lyria fought against the Aristocrat in a sword battle and won, and the Aristocrat was not at all surprised when she tried to poison him). I love that there's a couple different possibilities from that - but the idea that Lady Lyria was in an unhappy marriage with a cruel Aristocrat who locked the person she truly loved up in the basement (They're both seen singing the line "Love is miles away, but I'll still wait here for you") is my favorite.
Add that to the 80s synth and the effects of the video and you get this lovely, dreamy sort of video. 10/10.

with country and rock being stereotyped as 'white music' and rap being stereotyped as 'black music', THIIIIIISSSSSSS is why I keep telling people to expand their horizons. So much music, made by ALLL KINDSSS of artists, so much to be appreciated in this world if we all could just STOP seeing color and putting music, entertainment, and OURSELVES into boxes. THIS is talent....no matter how you cut, slice, or dice it...and that's a FACT!! I just found this video in my recommended, and I'll be sharing this, and Tanner Adell (please go check her out if you like country music) all over the place, to all my friends. Music is its own language and is universal. Never limit yourself to a genre...give something new a chance, and you just might be pleasantly surprised...I know I am.

The music industry has long boxed artists into genres based on color. "Race records" were a real thing in the 1950's and sadly continues to this day. There are so many examples of Black artists pretty much railroaded into r&b/hip hop because the industry thinks that all Black people want to hear (not true by the way, lol). Thankfully the industry can't sustain itself the way it used to and independent artists like Hemlocke Springs are bypassing traditional means of releasing music which is great for all of us. Also, don't be so quick to judge folks. There are plenty of Black Paramore fans, lol. The seeing color part isn't the problem. We're all beautiful in our glorious hues. It's the judgy part that needs to go. Peace.

Which is insane because black folks literally created rock music and originated country music as well. And techno and some other genres. So, I'm of the theory that, in 10-15 years time, we will become unwelcome in hip-hop and R&B as well if we keep letting ourselves be marginalized in the things we create.
