I think pop fans nowadays are missing a lot by just looking at late 2000s pop.. THERE'S a lot of pop groups in 80s especially 90s where choreo and singing come together. Backstreet boys, Spice girls, Nsync, britney spears etcetera
I saw Fifth Harmony and clicked immediately. It’s amazing to think of how much of an impact they left in just 6 years. Them and Little Mix completely dominated the 2010s for western girl groups. Always impressed by how young 5H was too. It’s crazy to think with all their hits that 4/5 of them were teenagers for most of the duration of the group.
I feel like the concept of an actual "Pop Idol" in the west stopped in the mid-2000's. The only equivalent to an idol opposed to a regular artist in western music might be Britney Spears, Samantha Mumba, Hilary Duff, Justin Timberlake, etc. There used to be a show called "Popstars" which formed a bunch of groups back in the day, so that might've been another thing to talk about.
I hope these girls , will try to explore and listen to other POP GROUPS / POP IDOLS from other ASIAN countries. specifically from ASEAN countries. who are equally talented too.. Go ASEAN POP !!!

I think what he is trying to imply is the one in K-Pop and P-Pop where company follows a rigid training system and idols are trained for years or months before debuting. I don't think the West has that. Usually, Pop singers in West are selected in a reality talent competition or if you're discovered by a talent scout then you're offered to have contract with a talent agency or somethin. It is also base on popularity in some ways. Whereas in the Asian pop industry, companies mostly select these talents through trainings or survival reality show that usually runs for 100 days that highlights their pre-debut scenario and eventually aiming for that chance to be included in a pre-created boy/girl group of a certain company (MLD for example) that will have an official debut on idol stage like MNet shows.
there is a british artist named Mae Muller who is actually quite famous in Korea and a lot of idols listen to her music! she represented the UK at this year’s eurovision
there's another 'western' group that it's actually a global group called NOW UNITED where each member represents a country and they sing and dance more similiar to what kpop groups do and they also had for like 5 years the same choreographer that BLACKPINK had kyle hanaghami and the same as BTS for Dinamite Nicky Andersen, they mostly popular in Brazil, Portugal, the phillipines, UAE and some African countries like senegal and others

Agreed but that's what you get when the ones talking only have general knowledge about the topic. It would be interesting if they invite "experts" or someone with deeper knowledge in this topic of western pop and asian pop.
They should have specified the topic to POP GROUPS, if the other side will only be talking about pop groups then the other soloists + pop groups. Because both pop soloist and pop groups exist in both western/asian pop. They should've discussed the main elements that makes the music different, but first of all i think it's the language. English being the universal language is an advantage to western pop. It's easier to relate to and debut globally because at least everyone knows english. On the other hand, asian pop/ kpop have to "dress up" their sound for people who don't speak the same language to give them a try. But in general they are the same just different origin because they still fall under the POP category.
When she compared BTS to 1D in terms of choreo, my first thought was "One Direction was the boyband of my time who were great singers but terrible, terrible dancers" 😂 if you're directioner, you'll understand this reference lmao (i miss my boys 😭) Also, yay for including SB19 here! I would say that there was little time for a proper conversation about pop and k-pop, so everyone named their favorite performers or mentioned those who are among the most famous, so there is a chance that even on the other side of the globe they have already heard of them.
