I have had my President McKinley for over a year now and it continues to be a great performer. And their service is second to none. I had to have my speaker replaced and there was no questions asked. Mike's Radio Repair did a quality repair. I have talked all over that country and to Canada and south America with skip.
@@RobertBeckk same with me in my Fiesta it's just stuffed between the sender console and the passenger seat. I don't like making holes in things even if there was somewhere out of the way to actually mount it.
@@FarpointFarms I think you will love it. I use a President antenna and my SWR is flat or a Wilson Little Will and it's a 1.2 across the band. The SSB receiver is outstanding. I find myself having to turn the gain down for local use on AM or SSB.
Hi Erik great video - can't wait to see how you get on with the McKinley! Over here in the UK we are eagerly awaiting the launch of the EU version with FM / AM and SSB
I installed this in my Tacoma about two weeks ago after using it as a base for about a year or so. It works well as both a base and a mobile unit. The front-firing speaker eliminates the need for an external speaker for my set up. The ASC (Automatic Squelch Control) removes the need to constantly adjust the squelch while driving. It doesn't work on SSB though but really helps when monitoring AM (channel 19, for example). The fine tuning for SSB is solid too. The SWR meter/system is great. My antenna is at the tailgate of my truck so I simply set it on SWR, turn up it's volume, then start tuning my FireStik by listening to the beeps. The faster the beeps, the lower your SWR is. The short chassis is perfect for my installation. Anything bigger would have been difficult to find a mounting place.
President is knocking it out of the park with these new radios. I just got my president Ronald a few days ago just waiting on my 1k ohm resistors to get here so i can convert it.
You do a good job with explaining the features of CB radios. My friend & I have been trying to establish CB radio communication between our houses that are six miles apart. We tried using a couple of used AM radios, yet, I could hear him and he could not hear me. I purchased two radios like the one in this video via Amazon for about $175.00 each. Both of our antennas are 30 feet in the air. I hope the extra power with SSB will allow both of us to hear each other. Crossing my fingers.
After watching several of your videos on CB and SSB radio's I found one of these for my 41 year old GMC motorhome.. a New Old Stock Ray Jefferson Marine Mobile CB-740 CB/AM Transceiver was looking for something well built and old style looking..lol thx.
Eric, I’ve had a President McKinley for about 2 weeks now and I absolutely LOVE it! I took it to my local radio pro the first night and he was able to get it tuned up to about 18w on a.m. and 15w on s.s.b. I had the radio mated to a Radio Shack 102” whip until last night. It did pretty good and I’ve had some multi-state conversations when skip was rolling. I have, however, wanted to get a President antenna because I wasn’t all that thrilled with the erratic SWR readings I was getting with the 102” whip. I did my homework and called President Electronics USA in Florida last week and asked for a rundown on the best antenna available for the McKinley. The gentleman I spoke with recommended the President Texas as the best for range. The Texas is a 7/8 wave radial whip that sits at about 83”. I happened to stop by my local radio pro’s shop last night after work, and low and behold, he had a shiny new Texas hanging from his shelf. I asked him what he thought and he said that he had been running one on his vehicle for awhile now and he loves it. I picked it up and installed it in the parking lot before heading out. Once I put the top part of the whip in the center load, I checked the SWR on channels 1, 19 & 40... FLAT as a pancake on all 3 channels, none of which registered less than a 1.2 on any of the afore mentioned channels. The radio shop is 30 minutes from my home and I got 3 very positive reports on my trip back. The other thing I noticed is that the noise floor is half that of the 102” whip. A local guy that I’ve conversed with in the past said “you’re blowing my doors off” and he was sitting at his base station about 8 miles away. I’m anxious to see if I can get some good skip contacts in the next few days, assuming that propagation cooperates with me. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents worth. I love your channel and I’m looking forward to parts 2 & 3.😊
I look forward to this series of videos and how this radio performs for you. I’d also enjoy a thorough look at SSB etiquette sometime. I’ve been using my 980 SSB a while now, and it seems there are a couple of sideband cultures, each with unique jargon and vocabulary. From here in Texas, I’ve spoken with folks in Wisconsin and Utah. Enjoy the SSB!
I ordered this because of your videos on this radio. I am a greenie. You should do a video on just how you install a radio, and everything that goes into it.
Can't wait to see how these work. We also run cobra 18s in our trucks. Combination of front firing speaker/weather channels and scan is unbeatable. Weather channels are very important to us in our construction business along Lake Erie. The 18s are gettin old and beat up. Perhaps it's time to try something new?!
If you have a watt meter ,, I’d be interested to know the stock PEP (Peak Envelope Power-Swing) on 13.8 volts versus 24 volts . And if all those stickers don’t end up stuck to your vehicles ,, save me a couple ! I have a rare , like new Uniden President HR 2510 I run in my Jeep , pushing a Texas Star HD 350 .. it’s a skip talking beast ,, when the skip is in !! I’d like a sticker for the back glass !!
The Midnight cafe will return soon! It's just super busy here at the farm right now, and I've been battling some medical issues. I had surgery last Monday and hopefully that will be the last of it. I was amazed that President reached out to me for this and can't wait to hook it up and do the long awaited SSB vs AM range test so many folks have asked for.
Shoot me an E-mail with your address and It's on the way! I will have to check if the tekpower can crank up to 24VDC. If it does I'll try it out and let you know.
Well i finally dunn it, and it's all you your fault! This week I purchased Pres McKinley radio to get back into CB. I used to be trucker and miss having one for road trips. Really liked the DIN size, front speaker, SSB (something new to learn!), and scan on this one. You, 741, DX commander, MikesRadioRepair, and cbradiomagazine are all to blame ;) Thanks! And make sure to let Pres know so they send you more stuff to play with ;)
I've heard these are very good radios. The front mount speaker is great for audio in vehicles with high road noise. One of the problems I have found with other brands such as the Galaxy 929, is the osc stability with temp variations. I still have a couple of the Uniden grant series from the old days. Hope this is a good one for you. All the best.
The reason(s) I bought the President McKinley are 1) DIN size, 2) front speaker, 3) 2year warranty when purchased with an antenna. Have had it installed now for about two months now, and am very happy with it.
Still have it? Holding up? Long term review? Really thinking about making this my first cb. Or was thinking of getting an am/fm for cheaper. Looking at the harrison vs fm cobra 29.
Eric - thanks for the great presentation, I've learned a bunch. I bought this President SSB CB thinking I could power it up using my apartment current. What can I get to convert 110 to the proper voltage and would be an easy connection to this radio?
I've heard good things about this radio. With a 102" whip it should be a great performer. Do you have any plans to hook it up to your Antron 99? I hope you do! Thanks for the Saturday morning videos, Eric.
Eric, if had to choose just 1 radio (am / ssb) what would you choose to use both as base and mobile? i'm looking to get a new radio, wan't a am / ssb so looking for opinions.
I would look at this model or the Uniden 980SSB both are great radios, with the McKinley being a little more advanced and having a little better receive.

I was wondering about the clearance in the rear of the unit. It does look shorter than a regular AM/FM radio so I hope it will be fine.
