  • MARKING 35 YEARS OF LOVE, ACTIVISM AND LEGACY
On June 11-12, 2022 the National AIDS Memorial displayed 3,000 Quilt panels in Golden Gate Park, marking 35 years since the first panels were made. Our cast was honored to be asked to take part in the unfolding of these panels for display.
They did so proudly wearing their leathers. Watch as Race Bannon and Graylin Thornton tell us what this moment meant to them. To learn more about the history of the AIDS Memorial Quilt watch our full interview with Cleve Jones. • WHEN WE QUILT // On Gu...
This historic event honored the lives lost to AIDS whose names are stitched in the fabric of the Quilt.

Couldn't keep myself from crying. Thank you so much for sharing and educating. Im extremly thankful for everything your generation did and is still doing and i cant seem to find the right words to express it. I hope that other generation can one day look back at mine and say the same about it. Again many thanks out of germany and i still cant express how thankful i really am

Seeing how big the panels are in person (on video) and then zooming out to the entire quilt. I started bawling. These are so many stories and memories that I’ll never get to hear, from people who should still be here today.

I am totally bawling my eyes out. I grew up in and came out in the mid 80's. Went to my very first gay bar in 1985. I truly believe if I had been born just a year or two earlier, I wouldn't be here today. I LIVED through this and saw friends and acquaintances die on a weekly basis. My dearest friend and roommate gave up because the treatment at the time was worse than the "cure". I saw him waste away like no other human should ever have to endure or another witness. All because of stigma.
Why am I still here, will always remain a mystery. THANK YOU!!! For this. ❤. The "kick in the rubber parts?" Much of Covid vaccines that saved millions during the pandemic was exactly built on the shoulders of the science of virology from HIV/AIDS research. Can you imagine if we had that much effort and resources funded into HIV/AIDS in the 80's on how further along we'd be now? So many young lives lost that could still be with us. The talent, the knowledge, the sheer contribution to us as a species.....LOST. Yes, I'm crying now at this and such a brilliant tribute, but at the same time...still makes me so furious and angry on how hate won the day back then and still does today.

The UK had a quilt which toured throughout the 4 countries. I remember when it came to Belfast it was displayed in the Ulster Hall. The queues to see it stretched the length of the street. We queued for hours, and when we eventually made it inside, I was stunned. It was like entering a church...the people were awestruck. It was laid out in such a way that every panel could be read. I understood why we had waited so long to get inside. People took the time to read the messages, stitched by loved ones so that the person they had lost would be remembered. It was very interesting to see the faces of the people when they exited. It was obvious that every visitor had been touched by grief. They might not have known the people who had lost their lives but they had certainly touched their hearts. This was at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland but people came together from both sides of the community to honour the lives of those who were lost too soon to this terrible virus. Parts of the quilt were feared to be lost a few years ago but it was displayed in London in 2021. I would love to see it make a return trip to Belfast. The only other similar display that I've had the privilege to view was a 9/11 memorial. I was in New York in 2012 and we had headed down to Battery Park via Tribeca. We came across a chain link fence that had several thousand ceramic tiles that were made by friends and family of the victims of the attack. I spend a couple of hours reading and photographing them.

I'm saving this to add to my educational resources on these topics. Thank you for making this video and all the other On Guard videos - I'm so grateful to have these perspectives available, especially as a zillennial queer person.

Ah, the end- it just kept zooming out. Nothing will undo what we've lost.
But I'll always remember you, as loving me.

Hi guys. Thank you for this video. The younger generation must know what the HIV community went through in the 80s & 90s. My partner and I were diagnosed in 1992. Sadly my partner passed away in 1998 because there was no more meds to try. I just celebrated my 30th year of living with HIV. I have now outlived my friends and family. Glad I am still here to enjoy my 4 grandkids who I never thought I’d see. Again thank you for bringing this video to the public.

You guys are helping me with phrases and rhetoric to talk to homophobes like my dad. I wish I remembered all your names to thank you individually. There will always be controversy. As long as we communicate there's hope. I'll keep watching. Plus I'm comforted by educated people ;)

Thank you to the On Guard Salon team and the people who maintain the quilt panels. This is very personal to me. My godfather was a gay man who we lost in 1984 or 85 to AIDS. I only met him once when I was very young (maybe 4 or 5). Based on that, I believe he may have already been HIV+. Now, as a gay man myself, I wish I could remember his last name so I could see if he has a panel, and if not, I would love to create one to honor him.❤
