Just started BJJ, 4 classes in. I want to do a tournament ASAP but I was a little hesitant because I don't want to embarrass myself. Seeing you go for it is motivating me to try it. Good luck out there!
Thanks for putting yourself out there, i am a 51 year old, white belt 1 stripe and this was really helpful I have subscribed and excited to watch your journey Thank you Simon
It takes a lot of humility to post a video showing your first time competing and losing. I GREATLY APPRECIATE YOU and thank you for allowing us to learn through your experience.
Totally agree! Thanks for posting this! I feel like a lot of commentary videos are, "I've been training for 17 seconds, and you can see here how I nail the flying armbar against someone 200 pounds heavier than me, I think he was a black belt too." (Obviously joking, but it is very intimidating to only see extremely lopsided wins from very skilled white belts.)
Respect to you for putting this up. It takes alot of courage go into a tournament with only 2 months experience! Thanks so much for sharing your experience 🙏🏻
This is inspirational for my own first tournament. You lost both matches convincingly and still shared it. Makes me understand how little a loss means! Thank you
Thanks! I have another tournament coming up in about a month. Ill be posting more and will upload that tournament too. I have improved a lot and just enjoying the journey.
I love it man. I've been training for almost 6 months. I registered for my first tournament but had to dropout due to no opponents and didn't want to go down an age group and up a weight class. Lol. I can't weight for my first comp!
My first tournament was 2 months into training and I never looked back. I will be going to my 5th on July 9th and every time I comeback better. Its not about winning, its about testing yourself and always pushing forward. Just get good sleep the night before and stay as calm as you can. I want you to think you have won before you step onto the mat and do your best. If you record your roll please send a link. I would love to check it out. You got this!
Let's go! Just don't give up and have fun. I have been going 3 to 5 times a week for about a year and I have never been stronger. If you ever record your rolls please send me a link.
Good luck! Get good sleep, and keep the game plan simple. The nerves can be hard to handle, just remember you are there to have fun. comp will push you faster than class, so I think its always worth it.
Honestly you did pretty good for only 2 months into your BJJ journey. I don't have any pointers other than train a whole lot more. Doing competition this early on can be a big help to actually see how you react during the match when it's "for reals". And it's great to be able to roll with people you have not rolled with before. I did my first tournament when i was 9 months in. Looking back at the videos of the 2 matches i did, i could have won the 1st match on points if i would be a bit less nervous. The ref said, if you've waited a couple of seconds longer you would've gotten points for passing. The 2nd match i lost 19-0 to someone who had been training for 3 years. For me it was a win because i did not get submitted. Anyways thanks for sharing the videos and have a great time on your future matches.
You can be proud man, that you’ve stepped into a tournament with only 2 months of training. Keep it up, enjoy the journey, I will be watching as a subscriber 🤙🏽
I really enjoyed this video. Loved the set up and commentary. You haven’t made one in a while and you should. Would love to see where you’re at. Hope you’re still rolling. 🙏🏼❤️
Great video mate! I love the idea of using this platform to track your progress and reflect on each competition. Bravo for sharing this with the world. I'm inspired to start doing the same 🙂
My first BJJ instructor was pushing me to sign-up for a yearly local tournament, mostly put on by my club, about two months after I started. Like you, I am a big guy, so I was destroying my fellow white belts and any blue belts I was encountering. However, the reason why I declined to enter the tournament was because I didn't really know any BJJ after only two months. I "knew" some positions, submissions, and takedowns, but I hadn't practiced them much and wasn't comfortable doing them. I respect that you went into tournaments this quickly, as it must have been terrifying and confusing.
I like to jump in with both feet. I think its smart to wait until you are ready. Most people wait until they are almost a blue belt before showing up so its hard to win and that can cut the wind out of your sails. At the end of the day as long as you keep showing up to class tournaments are just open mats that cost $50 a roll lol.
I’m 2 months in as well and I start my first tournament in 4 weeks! Watching this has inspired me yet intimidated me at the same time lol. I’ll definitely be following your progression. Keep at it brotha! 💪🏽
Hey big boi Bjj, Thanks for the video. The honesty is awesome brother. I’ve been doing Bjj for nearly 3 months and have my first tournament in 3 weeks. Hope to keep seeing more of your vids and keep going man.
alot of respect for you not being afraid to sign up and compete. now you know to start drilling some mount escapes/reversals. keep grinding dawg i got my first tourny nov. 18 after 3 months of training.
Thanks for sharing, bro. I’m a big guy myself. 328lbs. Doing Jujitsu for two months also. 44 years old. I was thinking about competing myself maybe down the line.
New subscribers her. I love that your are honest about the struggle and the journey. Your video her was your video here was inspiring.. keep the good work.. 👍🏽👍🏽🔥🔥
Thank you for the kind words and this channel is like my bjj journal. I am trying to seek improvement from a 3rd person perspective and recording myself is just the best way to do this.
My coaches tell me that all the time. I am constantly trying but it hasn't really clicked yet. Starting out I was worried I was going to hurt someone by falling on them and the more time I spend on the mat the less I feel like that.
@@bigboibjj8507 you have to remember, this art is meant for the little guy to work it out on the big guy. Do not be afraid, use your weight, but DO NOT use muscle. You will tire out faster
Keep on the journey 💪 nice to see videos like this. U should be proud of ur self, only 2 month bjj. Now i have to go bjj tomorrow after this video and really start doing that 👍 i have been too scary to go back there 😁
Nice work and good on you for competing so early. Just a FYI, on the first roll where you were in mount and caught the leg we normally call that 1/4 guard (3/4 mount for them) and not half guard. Nice editing. I'll sub so I can follow your journey!
2nd guy did a duck under, down side to collar ties is that you leave that side of your body open and when opponent controls your elbow you're unable to stop them for the most part.
Bro, congratulations on getting out there and for your student mentality. I wish you the best on your journey. I started mine about 4 months ago. My first tournament is in about 2 weeks!
@@bigboibjj8507 It went pretty well. I'll post a link shortly. I've been meaning to get around to that. I like the idea of posting all the footage as we go. The good the bad and the ugly of the journey.
its a late comment ik but right now im also doing bjj and when u go for the single u dont want to just reach for it you have to shoot in like your knee is breaking a board between his legs just a little advise (im 11 and have been doing it for 4 years grey belt)
Congrats on the wins! I will take all the advice I can get and I will offer you some back. Dont down play your knowledge by saying your only 11. You are correct and my single is very weak, I have been working on it for the last 3 weeks in the gym. Good luck in your jurney and thanks for the advice!
Keep on the journey, it's all about the ride.
Right on! It's hard but super rewarding. One of the reason I started this channel is to watch my progress.
Amazing Job man! Really respect you sharing your journey - don't quit! I'm 11 years in now and can say it was the best decision of my life
Thank you for sharing and commentating, this is actually VERY helpful to us fellow white belts believe it or not. I appreciate it.

Go for it. Every tournament I have been to has been a positive for me. People want to see you do your best and win or lose you will be better for it.
Youve got to the first go around🤣 just go for it
I’m currently 3 weeks in to my jiu jitsu journey and this is so awesome to see man.

It's easy for people to post matches they won, not so easy to post losses. Good for you, man. Keep at it and you will absolutely get better.
Props to you for having the courage to compete after 2 months.
Great job brother! I have my 1st tournament next weekend and appreciate your honest take on how you did. I'll be following your journey!
Good luck! Get good sleep, try to find away to keep the nerves down and just do your best.
