Hope there’s more to come soon, I absolutely love hearing John get lost in his wisdom and mastery of photography like this and other videos. So inspiring, this information and knowledge expression is that of any lecture!
John and Deeno, thanks for making this video. John, I tuck your wisdom inside my head every time I listen to you. From this video I’ll remember; “Sometimes photography is crazy magic like that.” And, “I try hard not to take pictures.” Thank you!
Hello John! Your channel is pure gold! I'm 16 y.o. and started shooting on film two years ago. Your channel helps me staying inspired. Thank you! Stay healthy!
Thanks Oscar.Making the photos was a whirling dance with myself and a lens in a special place made more special by a hungry heart and a camera as a friend.
“Crazy magic” indeed. But it also takes a great eye and technique and you have it in spades sir. Loved this 💚 always a pleasure watching and learning from you. Feel like I’m in the steam and smoke. Thanks a million for sharing. More please.
Your photography advices (in this and other videos) are probably the best ones I have ever heard, John. Many of them are indirect but so valuable - like a delicate scent that presages something amazing. Like in childhood, once you catch the smell of cinnamon coming from the kitchen - you know that there will be an apple pie for dinner. Thank you, John, thank you Deeno.
Thank you. Yes the smell of skunk cabbage in early spring and bacon frying. I am happy in my darkroom today and your thoughtful comment makes me smile. Photography is a tonic.
That's for all of the valuable information over the years John, you have been a constant source of inspiration for me, even in times where I have none! All the best, keep well.
Wonderful shots....and your teaching method...inspires that inner child to want to take wonderful images like these. Thank you for putting the video together.......you andDeeno
I just discovered this channel and it is absolutely refreshing. I enjoy hearing about your approach especially vis a vis being prepared and unafraid. Please release more! Kudos from Sri Lanka 🍺
@@billpeck9489 Thank you Bill. Lots of wasted paper to get one decent print. I think it adds up to about twenty thousand prints I have made in 51 years.
The Orient Express was a train that ran from London to Istanbul. It connected the west with the east and was associated with glamour and political intrigue. Consequently it featured widely in literature and film, everything from Dracula, to murder mysteries and political thrillers.
Thank you. I wish we could call this wonderful top of the heap medium in documentary photography. What was known as "Straight" photography was somehow dragged into the street and gutter. No I do not make pictures of dirty streets. "Straight", meaning nothing posed or set up. Taken from from real as it moves life anywhere, but unaranged and at 1000th of a second.
"used to be"??? dude, street photography has not changed. it is today what it has been since the beginning. the only thing that has changed is your perspective.....
I've just looked up the history of the Merchant Navy Loco 35028, it's still in use, don't know whether it pulls the Orient Express any more though, but it's definitely still around. Great story telling through your photographs, thanks.
Sunny 16 is good, but I use the Nikon F3 which has a built in meter. I also use Ilford XP_2 film which has a wide exposure latitude. With this film, exact exposure is not required.
@@JohnFreePhtography Thank you so much for your quick answer. I also have an F3, but I worry that the little lcd-screen will fail on me soon - the camera's Achilles heel. Do you manually set your settings or do you use the aperture priority automation?
I realize it's digital... Nevertheless, the lesson applies. I have a series from last year that I shot at 0730hrs, shot maybe 24 or 37 shots in 10-15 minutes of workers walking to work in the rain. I got more keepers in that series than I realized, it was only years later I looked back and realized how good most of those shots were in comparison to my usual hit rate.
I love listening to this guy talk about photography and his work
that mood shot felt like a scene in a movie. crazy
Thank you Deeno for making this. Se how much fun Johnny has.
It is so good to see another video from you Mr. John Free. You are a true inspiration. Greetings from Finland.
That's one amazing roll of film, mostly keepers!
Yes, it is great fun to dance with time and a camera. Watch this magic time I had on a Christmas eve in London many years ago.

This is such an inspiration! Shot only 5 rolls of film in a workday... That sounds like crazy in 2021!
Love it! Great advice, thanks John!

Six minutes of what true street photography used to be and how it was properly done.

Thanks for the awesome videos, John and Deeno - I have learned a lot! But I'm wondering: how do you go about metering? The good old sunny 16?

Good info shared by a heavyweight of photography!
Thanks for watching!
Love them!
Dropping wisdom. A great six minutes
Beautiful! All 50mm lens?
I think so, but I also had a 28mm lens with me at that time I think. My memory is not that sharp after 25 years.
Excellent as isual
Usual
John almost 5000 views & no dislikes
Excellent going so far
What film was these photos shot on?
"Not just click-click" - that alone speaks volumes about street photography.
