Pie Bird or Pie Funnel on the Wheel

We had two students within days of each other requesting a pie bird and a pie plate demo. So we had to do a little digging. We knew what a pie bird was mildly. We knew it venting the pie, but we never thought about the part inside the pie. From what we gathered there are mini arches to allow the steam out. They are a place for the steam to collect the moisture from the pie filling on the inside preventing the filling from boiling out of the pie. They also had non bird shaped versions called pie funnels. This is a pie funnel made on the wheel with a nod to the Pie Bird with a mini hand made bird transfer.
