  • How I float a shower pan. I use a piece of redwood lattice 1/4" thick by 1 -1/2" wide to slope a deck mud dry pack shower pan for tile. This is an old school pan liner installation.
    For the video on the pan liner installation here is the link:

    Awesome. Bought a book decades ago to learn how to do this, but never fully understood how to. Your video have made the difference. Love the positive vibes at the end. Peace back to you.

    You're killing me with the square edge trowel! Finish up with a round edge trowel and cut that time down !

    I made a 30" level out of a 6' that got bent on the end. It is great for so many things, especially doors.

    Nice float, but you really need your curb lath before the float so it ties in with the deck mud. Curb mud is thin & weak in comparison, and the step up creates an additional load, so it really needs to tie in there.

    Great video! Old school all day but i do like the Redi-Tile system because everything is so much easier so its lot less thinking, lol . Thick or thin tile no problem just adjust the drain.

    For the new guys! An exposed liner and a well-used trowel, you can cut the liner and never know it when troweling the mud along the wall and curb!
    I cringe every time I see someone use a level as a screed or someone beets on it ! Have multiple size straight edges for screeding in your tool kit!
    Stablia makes a specific masonry level to beat on! It's not this one!
    We used to lightly pack the mud like Isaac only when we would install tile wet same day and beet the tile into the wet mud! Today we don't set tile like this so I tend to really pack the mud alot more than how Isaac shows in his video! The more it's packed the stronger the final mud bed!
    Isaac ever used a figure 8 pattern with your straight edges to establish the perimeter screed instead of beating your level into the mud?

    Anyway it Pans out, he's got you bro 😎
    Itd be dope if they made retractable tile guy levels for pans, perhaps the ingenuity would be accomplished on the top of the the level to avoid making scratch marks amongst the pan. Have you thought about making products of your own after having done tile your entire life?
    Maybe these should be called tamPans instead of drypaks😂

    Can you build a box (upside-down) to the size of the shower floor and form the waterproofed shower pan before putting it down?

    Can you just add mason sand to a 4:1 mix to lean it out? For instance 1 premixed bag to 1/4 mason sand.

    What did you put under the liner? If placed directly on cement can you do same with OSB or is there another step with osb flooring?

    Drywall contractor in Jersey here
    Replacing my own shower now. Installed Hardibacker and taped seams with straight flex tile tape with thinset. How should I waterproof the boards before tile ?
    What are you using these days. Thought about a membrane and or some trowel on waterproofing. Have you ever installed a membrane using laticrete ? Or any other combination. By the way if you sprinkle some Portland over your mud pan it will stiffen it up !

    Sorry might be a dumb question but you leveled it out the the tile height, no room for grout? Not criticizing just want to learn.

    i think your notch for drain turned out a bit lower than anticipated, so you had to use a bit more thin set on floor tiles to make the difference. the notch is right but doesnt allow for slight tamping the dry pack. nice work my friend

    • @TileCoach
      @TileCoach  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You are correct! I had to build up a little more thinset around the drain. Thanks for noticing the small details!

    • @fctazz
      @fctazz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TileCoachyes I seen how gently you were tamping sheets down into the thin set, trying not to get thin set up to far in joints. Happened to me a few times for sure when I did liner pans. Appreciate all you do my friend.

    How you do shower pans is don't do panliners. I'm in dallas tx. Everyone only uses panliners. I learned shower builds years ago in California I have my cti certified . I'm maybe only one don't use panliners. All my jobs are redos from failed panliners. I use laticrete membrane or hydroban and my showers will last 40 or 50 years what a real shower should last. I learned my tile trade in Sacramento California 18 years ago. Texas is the worse state when comes to shower builds. Bunch of contractors here do not know how to really build showers. No inspection here or nothing no flood test either crazy. I live in texas but California builds are by far more Superior
