The Number One Bass Player Problem Is NOT What You Think!

  • Today let's look at the number one problem I've seen in pretty much EVERY bass student I've had. It's as much an awareness issue as a technical problem and it can be very easily solved. So today let's look at how note control and duration can make even experienced players sound just plain BAD.
    We're going to look at bass technique, micro shifting, position shifting and large stretches in an effort to improve your overall bass playing. These bass exercises will help players of all levels in developing a more fluid movement around the fretboard and a better all round feel.

    Digging the background. Easier on the eyes than white.

    I really struggled with this too. One thing that really helped is noting where I looked - I would look at my hand (and tense up), but looking at the fret I'm aiming for helped with the tensing and my playing.

    I think this is the single most important lesson for us beginners. I’ve been using open strings as crutches because of the stretches I thought were required for legato notes. This will fix it. Thanks Mark! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      He taught the pivoting with the thumb technique in another video when I first started watching, swinging the hand from low register to high register. That was an eye opener and fun to practice.

    Thanks Mark. Good lesson and good reminder for even experienced players. It's nice to be reminded of technique or something you don't really think about as you play, just to make sure you are doing it correctly. And I am digging the new background. Thanks for sharing!

    Nice to see you doing real Bass. lessons, while SBS has descended into some kind ofmagazine chitchat,Gear freaky rocket science about Bass playing.its all very well but nothing really super informative like here---

      So agree with you! i have give up with SBS as you hit the nail on the head!, it seems to be more of a channel look what i can do with me mates. Marks channel is the best online for learning 1st class teacher, and as you mention in your post hope he never changes the format of how he teaches.

    Wow! Mark what a fantastic lesson as a newbie of only a year since i started, when i found this lesson i started laughing and thought that is exactly the problem i have and struggled to work out this problem even asking my tutor which did not solve this problem but watching and listening intently to your video, it all made sense to me how to do this and have gone to work on it straight away and within a couple of try's i was making progress. I can only thank you for highlighting such a simple problem but annoying problem i have been struggling with and now feel free from frustration. A brilliant and excellent lesson. Again thank you.

    I'm currently learning Hot Water by Level 42 (your lesson) and the shifting in the end of the fingerstyle intro from E to B on the A string is really challenging at the actual tempo. So I think it's better to play the B on the E string so you shift 1 fret less, from B to G on the E string.

    I never suffered from this and I wonder if it was because I was playing guitar chords and solos before bass, trying to sound like other seasoned guitarists. On guitar you had to learn to hold down strings because this technique failing would have sounded even worse on the six string instruments.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hence my use of the term legato. But this video is concerned with unintentional staccato notes or held notes with a tiny pause due to deficiencies in technique. Note duration of any amount should be controlled by the player. It shouldn't be due to bad technique.
