I was four years old when hurricane Gilbert hit Jamaica. It was very scary in Wilson's Run, Trelawny. BUT the people of Jamaica that I know are prayer warriors, we prayed all day and night for the hurricance to pass. Prayer works: As I sit here, Holy Father who are in Heaven please shine your loving mercy on this island of Jamaica, protect my grandmother, I profess in the name of the almighty God the bringer of life, the one in charge let Beryl pass over Jamaica, I say these words in Jesus name.

The fact that citizens believe they have to take chances with a hurricane because they have to be living day-to-day to feed themselves and their children should be telling the wider society and the government that something definitely needs to be done...
The economy in Jamaica is supposed to be booming according to the metrics being boasted about so there's no reason each and every Jamaican shouldn't be able to at least survive comfortably, once given the opportunity to have gainful employment and a standard of living that is attainable.
Leadership, role models, education, healthcare.

Regardless, most people would be making last-minute hurricane preparations. Also, most would simply be staying home and avoiding work.
What was worse is that there were reports of fisherfolk being out at sea until the last minute.

This reminds me of a Nigerian actor who just drowned in River Niger while crossing the river to shoot a movie without a life jacket. He even made a video while on the boat saying " Guys this is the risk we take to entertain you". He was even telling the guy that was riding the boat to please slow down because he is an only child and he has 3 kids to care for. He drowned the following day crossing the river the second time snd 3 other crew members too. God bless the people of Jamaica and we praying for a restoration in the land ❤

The gentleman selling the breadfruit said he has to work because his partner used some of their savings to buy groceries and he wants to make sure that if something happens to them that they have an emergency fund.

I am sure that they are perfectly fine. The storm did not arrive until in the afternoon, this was taped in the morning. Do not assume that because they sell in a market that they are fools. Every one has their plan for getting to safety mapped out in the head.
