Franz Wagner Was Closer to Rookie of the Year Than You Think

  • Franz Wagner had one of the best rookie seasons for the Orlando Magic in the NBA last season. Wagner, who comes from Germany and played for Michigan in college, was a top 10 pick in the 2021 NBA draft. Since his rookie season, he's been given a wide array of expectations. Some question whether or not he's capable of becoming an All Star caliber player, so I wanted to take a look at Franz Wagner and what he showed us last season that gives me reason to believe he's capable of reaching that star level of play.
    With the Orlando Magic coming out on the other side of their rebuild, securing Paolo Banchero in the 2022 NBA Draft, Wagner is going to play a key role in their success going forward. Around their core of Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, markelle Fultz, Wendell Carter Jr., Jalen Suggs, Cole Anthony, and Mo Bambo, they're poised for success.

      I can see it and that's prolly the best comparison i heard so far for him that's not another white guy from across the way lol Franz just gets his buckets. • @grapeape1965
      @grapeape1965 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Way better passer and point forward type when he’s optimized. Middleton is great and a;elite #2 is still correct, but franz if he reaches his attainable level (from what he’s already shown and grown) is that he can be a part of initiating the offense for himself and others. Which is a major thing to hav win your number 2 so you don’t need a third huh dollar player as that secondary ball handler when you’re number 1 usage star goes out. He’s got very good vision as well, issues his surprising height to see the floor well and actually fires the passes

      Not in that draft. But just bc of that draft class. It’s up there with the best ever as far as top tier prospects. Could be said about other classes, he just isn’t in this one. Cade and Mobley definitely more complete at higher levels and Barnes and franz next. That’s incredible company though, and just the luck of the draw of the class he was in that makes it where you can’t say stuff like that and it be true. He was not the most complete player in that draft and real analysts love him and see him and aren’t overlooking him etc etc etc!and there isn’t even an argument to make that statement true. I think, to your point about Wagner's perception as a playmaker, you have two guys (Barnes and Giddey) who are just as big as Franz and score at a similar clip who have more assists which is how people measure playmaking even for wings and bigs. He didn't get the love for ROY because he was do it all, just like Barnes, but was behind him in stats in nearly every per game category while guys like Cade and Jalen Green were explosive scorers and Mobley had his already all nba level defense and the conversation became do we reward a guy who does everything for a winning team, or do we reward guys who are excelling in single (but very important) areas of the game. Franz being the worse do it all guy on a terrible team was never going to enter that conversation.
