  • Here is how the good people of Kaunas came marching into the 2018 Dainų Šventė (Song Festival) in Vilnius, their rival city. Simply awesome.
The next such festival is this year. Let’s decode a few of the elements.
The singers begin the Day of Songs (this year, 20240706) by marching from the Cathedral to the festival grounds.
It starts with the majorettes and they command attention. Related to USA cheerleaders? Rather the opposite: A parody of a Prussian cavalry officer - hence their impeccable uniforms, vestigial epaulets, stylized riding boots, goose steps and imperious, fussy bearing. The Germans have a word for this type of carnival dancer: “Tanzmariechen.”
After the majorettes and their marching bands come the real stars. Every one of those thousands of singers is not just a beautiful person in a beautiful outfit, he or she also is an accomplished vocalist. Every one of them, from seniors to kids, as part of their choir group, beat out fierce competition for the honor.
This clip ends with members of Kaunas college choirs - elite talents - spontaneously demonstrating their impressive power of song, in perfect pitch and three-part harmony. They sing a fragment of a wedding song, “Ant Kalno Mūrai."
Conspicuously absent, for a New Yorker: Uniformed police, barriers of any kind, and TV commentators to decode it all for us.
