That 1973 copper half dollar that has the clad missing is an error called "missing clad layer", basically were the layer of nickel dye was not added for some reason, that's your answer.

I would say it's a missing clad layer than an environmental toning
1980 platinum plated probably. They had a run of platinum plated quarters.

I'm on the South side. In 2023 I went 22 boxes before finding silver. Off to a better start in 2024. Maybe we just need to stay the course sometimes.
I can tell you 2024 is off with a bang... next half dollar hunt coming soon.
So the question is: how does silver make it into circulation. I am guessing that someone turns their coins into the bank not realizing they are turning in sliver coins. Those coins then go to Loomis or Brinks and get rolled. Since their collection came in together it also leaves together which would explain why you find multiples in the same box. If this theory is correct we are all just waiting around for someone to make a mistake. Brinks may be pulling from a wider range than Loomis which might suggest why they sometimes seem to do better. But Brinks or Loomis, we all have dry spells which would be explained by a lack of people depositing silver halves in the bank. What do you think?@@GASilverHunter

I hope so! The silver was slow and steady last year and it was kinda nice. That said 2 years ago it was nice to have a couple of HUGE booms that I didn't have this past year.

Nice hunt my Friend. I would hold on to the 1973. It looks as though the coin never got the outer clad layer. It could be considered a mint error?
Thats my hope. Not sure though. thats why I am afraid to mess with it (dip it) or try to wash it off. Want to preserve it the way I found it.
I have found something similar to that 1980 half. Though mine just has the letter W stamped into it.
I have seen other counter stamps before as well. First time to find this one.
That insane amount of NIFCs could fill your NIFC books many times!
I would buy multiple of the same folders for coins dated 2000-date and fill as many as you can!
Anyway, congrats on breaking your skunk streak and it’s nice to see the silver still out there!
I already have 5 sets filled out. I upgraded a few and tossed everything else back.
Are the NIFC’s worth more or do people just collect them?
@@jbarkley5154 some people will pay a premium for them. I do make a few extra bucks selling them as a complete set. Some people collect them. Most coin roll hunters either don’t… or they do for a little bit until they realize they have $1000 worth of them in the house and they start turning them back in.

I used to hunt them and still get them from time to time. Issue was I would get like 1 40% every 20 boxes. Brinks has its lulls but not like that. If you go back to the beginning of my channel you will see nearly every box was Loomis.
Wow great hunt. A bit of silver and an insane amount of NIFC's. I never had seen that many NIFC's in a single box before this. Keep up the good work.

Think it would be neat to keep a running tally of your silver/proofs/NIFC throughout the year and maybe update at the end of each video. I would enjoy that. Love your videos and looking forward to a big 2024 for you and your channel
I actually went back and did that for last year;s half dollar hunts and started doing it at the end of my half videos either last year or year before. A lot of people already FF to the end. Giving full tally's increases this number significantly so I stopped doing it. It's also why you will see me, from time to time, not do a full video recap. So if you skip to the end and see 5 finds... I might have had 40 finds on a box earlier in the video.
5:30 i just recently got one of those coins with the same dates stamped into it in the same spot but it was gold.
The ad I showed said they were gold. Mine has a goldfish reflection in the nooks and crannies. But it reads more silver. I am sure you have a coin like the one in the ad.

Now I am wondering.....About 2 months ago, I got the same 1980 half, bright silver edge, and the exact dates stamped. I dumped that month in Savannah,Ga while traveling to South Carolina and Northern Georgia for my nieces wedding. Could that be the same coin? Guess we'll never know .....very interesting indeed!
It could be. I figure it takes a few months to get rerolled and sent back out. Its a neat coin... no value though.
I only ever found 1 box loaded with NIFCS...all were 2010, P &D. Ended up with 117 of them!
I have hit the motherload of NIFCs quite a few times now. I remember when it was a thrill.

you finding a lot of nifc in a box really cool, I just did my first ever half dollar box ever and found a like 5 lol.
I didn't misunderstand... I was just letting you know lots of people say I fake my stuff and I really don't. And those big boxes of 20-30 walkers do happen from time to time. Check out my epic playlist. I have some doozies. Dad's Spare Change last year or year before had 2 boxes from the bank that had like 800 walkers in them combined. He opened every roll on camera and if I recall opened the sealed boxes. Mad Stacker last year had a box with like 240 40%ers in it.
I get the big NIFC dumps once or twice a year.
Some nice finds, GA. If shipping wasn't so much, I would get a set of those NIFC'S from you since I can't afford to hunt myself at the moment. Definitely a nice way to end the skunk streak.
Yeah... its heavy. I could probably reduce it a little because when I priced it originally you had to do Priority mail for insurance (and due to weight). Since they have introduced their new ground tier I might be able to get shipping closer to $5... Will take a look.
Congrats on ending the silver skunk!!! I just got “four” box’s of 2023 half’s!!! That’s 16 box’s with no silver. I’m getting frustrated. lol. That copper coin is interesting. Hope it’s a goodie.
The skunk is real... and it does stink. I am just hoping I hit a some silver for the next few weeks before I go back to the dry spell.

Nope. Mirror finish once gone cannot be restored. Scratches of course... also cannot be fixed.

Aren’t the SF mintage lower than the NIFC levels, therefore rarer?
They probably are... but circulated Proofs with the kinda damage we are talking about won't bring in much.
As for the coppery half missing the clad layer, I have come across dimes that were dropped into Coca Cola syrup, or Coke that had evaporated down to the sugary syrup, and it had eaten the clad layer off of it like your half. Also, someone leaving it in vinegar or some other acid would do it.
One of the dirty, nasty looking halves I bet was left in one of those polyvinyl plastic coin flips that leech the chemicals on the coin.
I was wondering why some of the rolls with the 2023 halves had Sharpie marks on Kennedy's eye?
So... some hunters put a mark on their coins so they know when they get them back... but I have a new theory for a few of the marks... and I may make a video on this. I believe some are using a maker that will disappear when dipped in acetone. But by "coloring" the coin on certain spots, makes the DDO easier to see under a scope. Just a theory though.

Superb hunt. Are these actually found in daily change or just through the banks?
Half dollars really don't show up in daily change any more... so I have to order from the bank or happen to find a bank where someone just dropped off some rolls.
I have a quarter that is all copper. It's either worth $.25, or $1,000,000.

Bet it must be nice to finally get off the skunk. I ought to get around and see how many silvers I could find here in SC, tho from what I've heard, it won't be easy. Great vid to kick the year off!

That copper 73 likely was used in a casino. I was a casino dealer for 8 years and we kept halves in our tray for blackjack payouts. Occasionally a player would spill a drink and we would have to empty all the halves and chips to be cleaned. Wine on a half dollar will stain it just like that. I've seen several....so that's my opinion.
Thats as good a guess as I would have. I don't want to dip it or clean it yet... just in case.
Here in Brooklyn New York my last 15 boxes were total skunks. I just stopped buying them and why all the 2021s I have so many of them.
Sometimes its worth giving it a rest and let new supply come through. The skunks are a unfortunately reality of the hobby.
Funny, I went to the bank after your video I said, let me try it again, but they don’t give out many boxes and then only you order them. It’s very strange it’s Chase bank once in a blue moon, they’ll sell me a box.
Nice finds GA! I just got a collection dump box, 57 40% and 5 90%. This was after about 40 boxes with no silver. It was an awesome way yo start 2024. I have a video of me opening the best ten on my channel if you are interested. I wish you luck too!

I think Loomis or a 3rd party company that collects coin for Loomis is pulling silver in the Atlanta area. Find almost none. Brinks is good for me though.

I think the Red Book just assigns the NIFC tag to anything new in half dollars, assuming it'll be accurate.
You could be right! I know that they did correct the 2021 and 2022 in the the 2024 book to indicate that they weren't NIFC and I believe the 21 and 22 books said they were NIFC.

The proofs, when scratched this badly, really can't be "fixed." Silver can be dipped and it can help a little to a LOT! And I know this... because I have tried what you suggested. It just doesn't help.
I get my boxes from a local regions, but they get Loomis boxes and i am lucky to get 1-2 silvers out of those, if at all. This week, someone dropped off a brinks Kennedy box, still sealed. The bank called me and asked if I would be interested in the box. In that one box, there was a 1899 half, a 1944 walking liberty in VF condition, 6 franklins all in MS condition, 5 1964 and 21 40%. It was XMAS for me. Thought maybe GA Silver Hunter dropped the brinks box off at my branch with me in mind….LOL
I also had one electroplate, 1983, but no counter stamp

I’m on Box 19 without a sniff of silver and I’m getting very discouraged. I live in Cleveland, OH now which is considered a coin collecting city. So I guess I will continue to have little or no luck finding silver. I’m originally from nyc and I have found many silver coins when I hunted there. I’m picking up 4 more boxes this Tuesday and if I do not find at least one or two 40%ers then I think I’m going to go on a half dollar hiatus. It just takes up too much time and energy to hunt these boxes.

If you are hunting all Loomis, see if you can find a bank or branch that does Brinks or some other provider. Loomis rolls in Atlanta (for me) over the last 4 years have been TERRIBLE so I pretty much only hunt Brinks half dollar boxes now. And yes... sometimes taking a break is the right thing to do. Hope your next hunt works out!

Actually, I mostly deal with two banks, Chase and Citizens here in Cleveland. My 19 consecutive no silver boxes (19!! It’s really unfathomable) were all brinks rolled boxes. I have never gotten a loomis half dollar box since I moved here in 2018. The only Loomis rolled boxes I get regularly are quarters.
Anyways, tomorrow is the big day. Will be picking up 4 boxes from chase. I hope for my sanity I find a darn 40%er! 😂

nice hunt, have to like the silvers and a proof! I think you should keep the super bad clad proof, the beat up proofs are neat.
I think I originally set them aside, but needed a few halves to finish a roll to be re-wrapped. Those proofs were BEAT UP!
