I wish my penmanship was as beautiful as William’s. This was a sad video but insightful into the minds of the soldiers when they corresponded with their families.

These original documents put flesh on the bones of history. The war was fought by real people and their letters help us share their thoughts and feelings as if in the present. Great video!

The letter written by William Edmund to Sarah showed great compassion for his fallen friend and his family. This is so much more personal than the letters sent out by the war department just giving the barest of details.

I was born a Yankee but as the saying goes
“ A rebel by the Grace of God” I was raised on a steady diet of Southern Rock and spent my teens and 20’s on the ungodly hot 🥵 roofs of Florida working with in my mind were the last two true southerners in south fla. Circa 1979.
They taught me the trade and I earned there respect ✊🏿 like I earn everyone’s. By hard work 😓 and never ever quitting. Today at 60 I can still swing a hammer 🔨 and work with men half my age. I love ❤️ everything civil war. I am interested in hearing from you. Thank you

That was very touching and a look into a totally different time. You should do more like this one. It's a time machine back all those years to a horrible time in our past that I pray we don't see a repeat of in the near future. I had a relative who fought for Terry's Texas rangers, named Harold Simpson. The confederate museum at Hillsboro TX was named after him.. There's been Harold Simpson ever since the Civil War, each becoming a soldier.

Thank you for this upload, and more importantly for keeping a crucial part of American History alive despite those “loud voices” who wish to rewrite or erase it without full understanding of it. Being from and growing up in Charleston SC, and having lived down the road from “The Field of Lost Shoes”, New Market VA, I have had a very keen and deep interest in all things Civil War. My field trips as a student in Charleston were almost assuredly a local history lesson. I was so very fortunate to have a literal living history museum in my backyard growing up! I have visited nearly all Civil War “engagement “ sites throughout the US, and had a former spouse who, although a Yankee, but a decent military man, attended The Citadel and was very knowledgeable in particular ,the US Army positions and movements on many battlefields. We would often walk these now peaceful locations and use landmarks and battlefield commanders notes to get an accurate feeling for how close and intimately violent the combat conditions truly were. I would love to find like-minded Southerners, or even Yankees, all kidding aside; who wish to explore more about the real and truthful facts of this terrible chapter in our history! Knowledge is power and accurate information is vital in learning the hard lessons that wars and conflict can teach us all. Anyone who might enjoy a “laypersons” interests in and wishing to learn more about this terrible period, and some of the more everyday citizens experiences, please feel free to reach me on my TH-cam account msg. I’m very open minded to all opinions, with the exception of those that aren’t based in accurate information! ( Regardless of which side of the conflict it favors,) Again, many thanks, P

My great great great grandfather fought in the Pennsylvania 83rd volunteer infantry. He was wounded on the third day on culps hill shot in the lower leg but continued to fight after that until the end of the war. He fought from the very beginning of the war until the end in every major battle. I have no idea how he lived but he was extremely sick after the war. Stomach problems they had no idea what it was then. Probably Crohn's disease or something like that. He couldn't go anywhere without his bottle of Laudlum. My great great great grandmother fought the government and took 20 years to finally receive his pension long after he passed. It was unbelievable 1 dollar a month VA check.

@@BirdDogg Well, it is audio *plus* video, so perhaps published on a DVD. Market it like you would your music CDs. Maybe make a small "vanity" run first, special edition, pre-order, autographed, limited edition artwork, &tc, and see how well it's received. If it's well-received, more could be (more cheaply) made, but only the first run would have the special things... I dunno, something like that, which people could put in a DVD player, might be nice. 😊
