SM64 - The Big House in the Sky - 0x A Presses

- I collect the star The Big House in the Sky in Rainbow Ride using 0 A presses.
This video is an improvement from my previous video in which I collected this star in 1 A press. You can find that video here: • SM64 - The Big House i... . Since then, I worked out a new route that gets past all 4 glass blocks without pressing A.
Here is the route. I first make my way onto the ship using the lakitu bounce. I then blow up the cork box below by dropping a bob-omb clone onto it. Next, I clone a bob-omb and release it in such a way that it will ultimately walk off the ship onto a platform below, but only after a bit of walking time. During this walking, I quickly bring another bob-omb off the ship and into the teleport on top of the red coin maze, and leave that bob-omb there. Then, I make my way back up the carpets and grab the bob-omb that finally falls of the ship. I use this bob-omb to clip through the first glass block, and use vertical speed conservation to get over the second one. While in the big house, I store vertical speed as well as get close enough to the teleport bob-omb to reactivate him so that he follows Mario around. I use vertical speed conservation and the bob-omb's backwards momentum to get past the third glass block. And finally, I use the bob-omb itself to clip myself through the fourth glass block. After that, collecting the star is easy.

I like to imagine sometimes that Pannen’s controller’s A button is broken, so he has to find ways to beat SM64 without pressing A

E.g. the Pedro Spot. If it gets stable for minimum oscillations quickly enough, the RNG stuff gets just into the range of being theoretically possible.

But DR is supposed to be used lol. I find DRs more stable and easier movement then Long Jumps so I use them most of the time.

Why did you need a bobomb to break the cork box? Why not just punch it on the way up the first carpet? Unless that changes the way the bobomb walks
You caught me! I just _really_ didn't want to have to redo the lakitu bounce, since it's so precise and annoying to perform. So I decided to improvise and break it from the ship. Although, you could argue it's safer this way, since Mario has to move very fast during the carpet rides in order to beat lakitu to the ship, whereas there's no rush once he's on the ship. But anyway, I'll probably try to break it during the ascent during the 120 star run.

I really want to be able to do the trick you did at 2:55, but though I can move a little bit backwards that way, I can't nearly do any of the tricks you do. In particular, using a ground pound while being pushed back by a Bob-omb doesn't seem to work at all? I'd love to see a video on it, anyway...

I’m currently binging all these videos. Amazing work. Can anyone explain the reason behind all that crazy movement on the carpet that keeps Mario constantly twitching on the edges? I’m sure it’s a vital part of the strat but I can’t figure out how.
Its just pannenkoek trying to make the video interesting and not boring. He does that in every RR video. _It really is a required and extremely useful strategy._

can you do a video on the carpetless strat? if you didn't know, its getting the house star without using the normal carpet and could end up saving like 30 seconds in a speedrun
Even though it might be worth a video, the BLJ carpetless strat is so insanely precice that nobody - not even toadfan or xiah - did this in RTA. There is one carpetless strat that has one single time been performed using save states, but it's slower anyways.

Try it yourself. Get STROOP and set VS to 26.

Why do you pause the game at some points?
Terribrilliant Sometimes I want to dive and recover on two consecutive frames. However, since both of these actions involve pressing B, the game would think you simply held B for two frames instead of pressing it two unique times. By pausing, I'm able to get around this and press B on two consecutive in-game frames, since I can press them on nonconsecutive actual frames.
