    2. longer, less walks
    3. encourage sniffing! - it's relaxing and enriching!
    4. be engaging during walks

Thank you! That was really helpful. My dog is very anxious and these hacks would definitely help her! X

To prevent bloat, it's best to wait an hour before and an hour after heavy exercise before feeding. Any dog can get it, but it's usually more common in deep chested breeds. Also, you can use parked cars or physical barriers to hide behind while the other dog passes or crossing the street if you can do so safely. Will try the scatter feeding for my food motivated dog, just not a fan of picking up stuff they might find on walks - possible parasites, etc. Have also used no bark or we're going home - your choice. That works like a charm if you follow through the very first time you say it so they know you're not crying wolf. Next walk, same thing. You can almost see the wheels turning - hmmmm, do I want to keep walking with Mom or Dad or do I want to bark? They almost always choose the walk. For dogs barking in their own yard as we walk by, will say, no bark, they're doing their job - that's his yard. You would do the same thing if that was your yard. Usually get one whine and we continue on the walk. And as always loose leashes! If the leash is tight, it isn't right! A tight leash adds to the reactivity. If the leash is tight, they never have to look at you because they know exactly where you are. Plus you need to step up and be a leader, get in front of the dog , so the dog doesn't feel like they have to react. Suzanne Clothier's automatic check in and Joel Beckman's Rottweiler named Creed video for loose leash walking and reactivity. You're not going anywhere until they're on your page. He also has little dog videos if you don't have a 110lb Rottweiler. He's one of the very few "balanced trainers" who says pain messes with their brains - so no prong collars, shock/ecollars, not even a slip lead. I believe he's actually helping people who live in countries where those tools have been outlawed. McCann and instructor Carol with the field Spaniel named Cheerio and the empty dish across the room. The dish represents anything the dog wants. 180 degree turns until you can get to the dish on a loose leash. Practice multiple times in places before testing it on an actual walk. When you put the work in up front, it pays dividends on future walks. They earn their way on the walk. Michael Shikashio also has awesome defensive leash handling skills video too. Hope that helps.

I rescued a highly reactive pit bull who is love personalized but cannot calm down enough for recall. I trained her night and day for four months after my Dad passed and trained her except recall was not really working. Then went home and several months later i had a power surge from the electric company fire. I saved my dogs but it was really hard for them and me. Now we finally have a place to sleep and a place to play inside a great property on the beach. I've been working hard on recall and its been so hard. She's such a sweet loving dog but just cannot calm down even after several walks and then off leash running on the beach to listen and return to me. I rescued her from a shelter and was told she was two years old but was six months or so. My wonderful vet said she seemed physically ok. She weighed 93 pounds then and had zero training so i call her my 93 pound puppy. Without any training it took four months but we got pretty close training wise except for recall. She truly gets so excited she cannot listen and runs and plays but even with the first training period and this one i still have no recall. I'm going to try and watch your videos to see if i can pick up some good tips. Ive trained my dogs all my life and helped my friends but my dog is the hardest one I've ever trained. This video helped and i do try agility things but off leash she just cannot listen and if a dog comes forget about it she runs right over to play. She is all love but what people see is a pitbull running up to them who is happy but some people are worried about her. Its been hard she has a huge heart and loves to play with other dogs but is not gentle enough. She's a bully breed who loves to jump and play and slam a bit against a dog and many jump around and play with her. I've taught her lots of words including gentle and careful but when she gets happy cannot really listen. Imagine being a puppy in a home and at six months they dump you and your brother in a shelter. That's what happened with her and i could not rescue both. It broke my heart. I know she has anxiety too. I've really worked with her and given her alot of love. I just lost my German Shepherd her big sister who she looked up to. I still do not have another property yet so i cannot get another shepherd so its just her and my other dog, an adorable Chihuahua named Houdini. Thank you for sharing what you do it helps someone like me just trying to teach a big beautiful pitty she's special but still needs to come when called, sigh ❤️❤️

Early morning walks are the best 😊
Exercise is great, especially swimming and fetch. I don't have to deal with reactivity anymore but back when my German Shepherd was reactive these things worked well as management tools.

I found a volleyball court open to the public so that will be my safe heaven early in the mornings before anyone is even awake 😂

Thank you so much for this video! It was very refreshing for me to know I'm not the only one dealing with this issue. I have two dogs and one of them is extremely reactive to everything. The other one does perk up but he's so much easier to handle. We recently moved to an apartment complex that's very dog friendly and located in a "downtown" location so pretty busy overall. This would not be my ideal location but it's hard to find housing when you have not one but two big pitbull mixes. They've never lived in an apartment, always had their own yard up until a few weeks ago. My reactive dog wasn't as reactive until we moved here, he got worse. Which is understandable. It's a big change for them. we've barely have been here a month but it feels like an eternity.

Awww thank u for the kind comment ❤️ i totally understand how u feel! And it sucks that 99% of people will see ur reactive dog struggling and assume its ‘bad training’ or a ‘scary dog’. U got this!! And don’t forget theres soo many reactive dogs struggling too!

feel you. I have a 13 year old beagle.and we live in a bustling DOG downtown in MA. just rescued a juvenile rat terrier sho is HIGHLY REACTIVE. now I fear going out with him sometimes and I USED TO LOOK FORWARD TO ALL THE JOY MY BEAGLE BROUGHT ME. I am hoping that with the effort and all the things. I do with home eventually will pay off because I am not moving because of him but I will continue to Mae sure we are doing all er can to be better at handling our living arrangements each and every day - sometimes I have HOPE an d that is a gift of the dog.

@@diana828100 Susan Garrett has a video on growing your dog's confidence zones. Suzanne Clothier's automatic check in. You can also try a technique called LAT or look at that so now it's a good thing to see another dog, person, whatever. Any type of Nose Work helps too. Sara Ondrako has a great video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket. My younger Dobe leaves his lunch in his bowl - has to be in his snuffle mat. Hope that helps.

Im coming to terms with the fact that my new pup is a reactive dog. No aggression or fear but over the top EXCITEMENT to the point of losing controll. Its HARD (damn near impossible) to keep his focus on me if theres another human or especially dog within eye sight. It DOES make me hate walking or taking him places sometimes, but i dont wanna give up. Engagement trainings are very valuable and something we now work on every day. When i walk i just wanna turn my mind off and walk but with him i cant. I realize that when i do that it makes me boring and thats where the disconnect starts 🙈 good luck everyone 🙏

Was looking through leash reactivity videos when I found this one. My dog is a bit crazier than yours on walks so I have a LOT more work to do. But I have to say that my dog and yours look a bit like siblings! Love those blue merles!!!

This was pretty good information. Thank you for sharing. I have an Aussie 7 months old and he is easily triggered. I love the earlier walking idea as well as the throwing treats in the grass. I'm gonna have to get smellier treats and try this. Silly question: Do you feed your dog before or after his morning weird time walk? Not sure if I should feed mine breakfast before or after?

    • @TheGoodFloofdt

Thank u! :) and not a silly question! I like to feed after because sometimes we play fetch during the walk, and its usually not good to feed right before exercise :))

My dog is unpredictable when he reacts. He’ll meet 50 dogs and be so perfect, no issues and then growls at one dog and I haven’t been able to figure out why? 😢
