I loved that the Doris Faber bio of Hickock was mentioned and will make an effort to find Wiesen Cook's review. I read the bio when I was a teenager, when it first came out, and again recently. Rereading the book as an adult and hopefully more sophisticated reader, I was repulsed by the homophobic slant given to anecdotes, the odd interpretations of love letters etc. And am intrigued by the Joe Lash comments. Great show, although I agree that too large a time was spent on "current" politics, which might have gone unnoticed had the interview been longer. I wish it had, as it was totally engrossing.
This segment had such potential. Professor Cook is fascinating, and more adept interviewers could have drawn forth far more information. Northrop kept steering the conversation toward a bitch session on today's politics, and Humm's eagerness to show he'd read the book led to repeated mansplaining.
