  • Tomioka Hachiman Ondo was choreographed by my master Senko Hosokawa, the headmaster of the Hosokawa school, before his death in 1996.
As Venice, Italy and Fukagawa are sister cities, Tomioka Hachiman Shrine and volunteers of our Hosokawa School traveled to Europe with a portable shrine.
The mikoshi was carried on a boat! The Hosokawa school choreographed the Tomioka Hachiman Ondo for this occasion, and performed it on the boat for international exchange.
We are very honored to be able to assist in the performance of the Tomioka Hachiman Ondo video.
The teacher who is dancing with us is Chiho Hosokawa, the third generation Iemoto of the Hosokawa school. She gave me some instructions on the choreography.
She is the teacher who dances in the magnificent video clip of "Tokyo Olympics Ondo 2020" produced by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which begins with a dramatic hosting by Mr. Ichiro Furudate!
Hosokawa-style has been teaching Tokyo Olympic Ondo 2020 at the request of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government since seven years before the Olympics, together with the now deceased Soke.
Tomioka Hachiman Ondo is a lively choreography of carrying a mikoshi (portable shrine) and beating drums, as is typical of Fukagawa.
The mikoshi carries the gods around the town, and the taiko is said to have the power to drive away evil spirits and demons (sound spirits).
It is such a fun Ondo that you will want to dance all night long! Praying for good health, long life, and exorcism of evil spirits for everyone who dances to this dance!

Japanese culture is said to be an emotional culture, and it is said that emotion heals and nurtures people and leads society to harmony.
While relieving lack of exercise and stress, you can also learn about your own culture and interact with people internationally.
