- So how much is too much of a good thing? Well, today’s artist Phil Collins may epitomize the answer. This radio titan got off to a strong start in the 70s, was pretty much everywhere in the 80s, and barely slowed down for the 90s. He took over an established band in the 70s in Genesis then in the 80s he doubled his output by kicking off an unrelenting solo career… Beyond that, he also tried his hand at producing and collaborating with many legends… which brings us to today’s track: a so-called side-project that became a surprise duet when the Phillip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire, whom he was producing suggested they write one together. It came quickly and they created a rough demo…except when they came back the next day to record it, they realized the demo was perfect so they released it…the story of one of the catchiest songs of 1985 is NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes, we have covered Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by The Police, Somebody’s Baby by Jackson Browne, and Your Love by The Outfield.
But this time around we’re giving you twice as much as usual, with a double dose of Phils… It’s Phil Collins and Philip Bailey and their global smash hit ‘Easy Lover’. So to set up a running theme for today’s episode, I want to start out by asking a question. Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? And if so, “How much Phil Collins is too much Phil Collins?” Keep that question in the back of your mind as we go…
So coming into the mid-80s, Phil Collins was everywhere. He was all over the place in the music world. Just five years into the neon decade, the workaholic drummer-frontman had already released 3 albums with Genesis, 2 solo albums, and had headlined the Against All Odds Motion Picture Soundtrack. In the process, he also racked up 11 Top 40 hits. Three of them going Top 10. Remember these?
But that wasn’t all Collins was up to. Phil was also moonlighting for a long list of side projects… For instance, in 1980 he played drums on former Genesis bandmate Peter Gabriel’s third studio album. And he drummed on two Robert Plant records: 1982’s ‘Pictures at Eleven' and 1983’s ‘The Principle Moments.’
There were charity projects like Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ in 1984. And in later he became the only artist to perform at both Live Aid concerts… on two continents… on the same day! If that wasn’t enough, Collin also took the helm for multiple... - บันเทิง

Here's how I feel about Phil: when a recording artist has an arsenal of so many amazing songs, it would be a crime to NOT let them be heard! Phil holds a special place in my heart, probably largely because I heard so much of him in the 80s. He's a talented musician and I still love listening to his songs. 🥰

In the mid-80s, my sister's best friend had a side hustle doing receptionist work at a London gallery where various wealthy people came to look at art and hopefully buy stuff.
When she asked one attendee for his name, he said "Phil", and she replied "Phil *who*". Not only was he not a diva about not being recognized, but apparently he later referenced the incident in an interview in the context of stars not getting above themselves and thinking that *everyone* should know who they are. A class guy.
At the same event, she also asked someone else who identified himself as a mumbled "Mnuffler" to repeat himself until he clearly said "Mark Knopfler", and he was also gracious about it.
(She was a fan of both, but from the radio, and didn't really know what either of them looked like)

Exactly. I've seen him with Genesis and Solo and he always put on one of the best performances I had ever seen. Alas he has aged and has sickness now... so it's a good thing he released ALOT when he could because almost everything he ever released was a gift. (Except a few of the screwy kids songs he did for animated features and his children -- but we can give him that since he had the opportunity and the kids so who are we to criticize that..)
There is no such thing as too much Phil Collins, this man pretty much took over my musical life. From Genesis to his solo career, and his many collaborations with other artists, I can never get enough! This song in particular sounds way better at half speed. The music video plays at a much faster speed then it actually sounds on the record.
The Phil squared duet was one of the best ever 80s duets. Phil Collins really knew how to pick singing partners (e.g., Marilyn Martin).

When we saw Phil here in Tampa 3 years ago he close with “Take Me Home”. It was a tearjerker for me bcuz here I am seeing a musical genius very frail-basically tipping his hat and saying goodbye to us knowing soon he’ll be “going home”.

Not only did Phil team with many elite musicians but he also helped Eric Clapton to recapture his chops in 1985 as well. Such an amazing artist and incredibly kind to everyone he encountered.

So true, "Bad Love" and "Forever Man" are two I've been listening to a lot recently.
I never got tired of Phil Collins for even a minute from Misunderstanding with Genesis, through his solo career, Easy Lover with Phillip Bailey and through his 1990s music.
Easy Lover...one of my favourite songs from that period. Instrumentally great, such an oasis in a sea of drum machines and synth overload...great tune It was rock, it was pop, it was danceable, but it also it had a guitar riff, it had a guitar solo...and real drums!!! Superbly sung as well. Brilliant. Phil has done everything over his career...prog rock with 70s Genesis, prog pop with late 70s/ early 80s Genesis , pop, soul, ballads , both as a solo artist and with Genesis...and Disney soundtracks!! Not to mmention his hyperactive production duties...and all for the love of music. He's a genius.
The word to describe this time for Phil: Prolific. The star that burns twice as bright burns twice as fast. This song had all the things Phillip wanted. Great and fun song.
The two Phils certainly sounded like they were having fun on this song.
3 reasons I'm betting Phil's version of accounts are more accurate: Ego / accountability (sounds like a lot of blame and projection from Plant), Phil's long history of collaborations and producing, Phil's performances - he literally didn't miss a beat as far as I know even though he had a huge volume of songs to remember. Once he was no longer able to keep that up, due to health, he stopped.
He was constantly on the move.
I tend to agree. I've heard nothing but good things about Phil as a professional musician and as a person, yet many of us are familiar with all the old Led Zeppelin horror stories.
I saw him with Genesis when they came to Charlotte about two years ago
Fabulous show even though he had to sit the whole time. His son was fantastic on the drums as well. The first song had me worried, but by halfway through it he was doing just fine.

Respectfully, I question whether you are being impartial with that claim. I not only remember the performance but personally felt the assault on my very own ears.
The only people on that stage who could truthfully call themselves blameless were Power Station drummer Thompson and....John Paul Jones because, well, Jones is superhuman. Thompson? As a former session musician, he knew that a session musicians job is to "just get it right." Session musicians are basically hired guns and even though Thompson had his own career successes, playing with music legends like Plant, Phil, Jones and Jimmy? A pro who pays his bills by the level of his performances doesn't fail to prep. And you can't just "wing it" when covering for Bonham, just sayin'.
That's a luxury reserved for pampered stars. They are the only ones able to get away with treating a set like its basically....any other Saturday even if everyone knows it wasn't.
Basically, I'm saying there was more than enough blame to pass around on that stage and the ones blameless are the ones with sense enough to shut their mouths about it. Thompson, Jones & Plant said zip...Thompson and Jones, blameless... What about Plant?
I'm not sure why you singled him out when it was Page who tossed shade / called out Collins. To my knowledge Plant said nothing...he can't argue that he wasn't off his game, he could feel every note he missed during that performance as each one happened. Trying to lay blame elsewhere would have been pointless. Besides, he's the one who invited Phil to play with them so he can't lay norms there either. So, I think you meant Page.

I honestly didn't own any Phil Collins albums. I never thought about buying one because he was Always playing on the radio and MTV. So prolific! I love this song.
I had a chance to see Phil live in Hannover, Germany, in the summer of 2019 on his best of tour. He was still absolutely killing it together with his son Nicholas on drums, and many other great band members and singers. Aside from In The Air Tonight just timed perfectly to play at sundown, Easy Lover was performed by Phil and one of his background singers in a performance that blew all over 50,000 audience members away completely. Despite his age, his voice was still super strong. Phil was an essential part of my growing up, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to see him perform live at least once. It is a memory I will always cherish.

Phil Collins is in my mind a man with a sense of rhythm, drama and variation. He was able to produce something fresh quite often. The difference between "Easy Lover" and "In the air tonight" (live version from "Finally...The First Farewell Tour" ) is remarkable and shows his abilities.
Phil and Phil. What a match up. We did have a little too much Phil in the 80s, but the man was on fire. You can't blame him.

You cannot get burnt out on an artist if every song is amazing. Tough to choose who was the top hitmaker in the 80s, I am sure the mainstream opinion on this would be Michaël Jackson, but for me it would be Phil Collins.

I knew it was "Easy Lover" from the title card - you're right it was an unlikely combo but it worked wonderfully well. Phil Collins was really prolific in that mid-'80s period and Earth Wind and Fire has always been one of my all time favorite bands, so I loved this song from the very beginning and it's still a favorite of mine today.
I have great memories about this song. I grew up in eastern Germany and was a huge Phil Collins fan. In lack of rock star posters or magazines posters, I took pictures of this video on West German television. Thanks for sharing the story 👍 Keep on rocking!
Great song, and a great video to back it up. I remember Mr. Collins' 'Special Move' in the video also. He had Mr. B cracking up, and me too! I couldn't agree more with Sharon Mattox as well. An arsenal of so many amazing songs. Absolute bullseye.

Very catchy tune and always one of my favs on the dance playlists I keep. All of Collins' work is different - the groups, the solo and this duet. I think that gives enough variety to not get tired of listening to any of them.
I always thought it unfair that Collins' ubiquity, timeliness, and turn from prog to pop made him so hated. Even more so that many of the modern reconsiderations of his legacy start and end with "In the Air Tonight." He has a huge number of great songs and deserved his level of success every bit as much as the other 1980s greats.
A painful lesson that I have learned, in my many millennia on earth, is that many people who are "haters" are that way in pathetic attempts to preserve their fragile egos. How often has it happened that you mention, quite casually, that you like something (music, food, book, whatever) and someone goes off on an extended tirade about how awful that is and how their preferences are far superior. They might as well as wear a sign that says "I put others down to build myself up". But then, the comments section of TH-cam is rampant with that type.

You can never get enough of Phil Collins. One of my brothers liked Michael Jackson. My other brother liked Madonna, but in the 80's it was Phil as my favorite. Against all odds is my all-time favorite song.

Phill Collins never in my book ever released a bad single in the 80s .I didn't always like everything at the time but this release was heaven.

Ditto that! He also appeared in some great tv shows & also starred, as the main character in the autobiographical film "Buster" aka Buster Edward's, one of the "real" Great Train Robbers. Phil sang the film theme song too = "A Groovy Kind of Love", which was a cover of the original by The Mindbenders. The film wasn't really about the outrageous robbery of a train full of cash, but about this London villain/robber's, ultimate love for his wife & family. All a true story !
I can't get enough of Phil Collins !! I wish we had more! My kids and I love the "disney" songs he did for Brother Bear. We know he didn't want to be a disney writer, but everything he tries - it just works.

Easy Lover still really holds the test of time, but I love the title track Chinese Wall too, the drum work on that really boosts the whole song. I am a big Phil Collins fan and would debate that the Led Zep live debacle would have happened whether he nailed the drums or not. The saddest part of that is that so much talent was on stage and nobody brought their A-game. That is definitely a story to cover fully in a video.
Yes, I think they all got carried away with the enthusiasm of helping raise money for Africa & thought it was going to be a sort of "jam" type thing. They had not rehearsed together at all. Wth? Robert's voice was shot too. They didn't appreciate that this "Event" aka Live Aid would be seminal & go down in history & end up tarnishing Led Zep's stellar reputation? Then, along came the well rehearsed & super tight "Queen" who gained the glory of Live Aid & that might have left a bitter taste in the mouth for Led Zep? It did seem like a case of a workman blaming his tools, type thing? It was a calamity all round & they all contributed to it in some way. They should have just admitted that it was a "rushed decision" & not what it should have been...end of.? Shame & disappointing for all.
Mind you, so was Bob Dylan, Keith Richard & Ronnie Wood, who performed together too, disappointing, plus some others who I can't quite recall at present because I haven't watched Live Aid since the 1980's as we recorded ourelves all 24 hours of it as we started recording & watching, when it kicked off in the early hours of that morning in Australia, who showed off "INXS" ! They were great, we became fans of their music after seeing them on the Aussie segment of "Live Aid". I don't not know if any of that was put on the official DVD, produced years, decade/s later?

Chinese Wall was a great track, though I suspect people who were born after it was recorded would literally crying and shaking over how problematic the video is.

I've always loved that hilarious and spontaneous video. I did not realize Phil produced Chinese Wall. It's interesting, for all the stress, pain, occasional mistakes, workhorse ethos, and health issues Phil has gone through, how many people say what a genuinely good guy he is.

I could neve get enough of Phil Collins and Genesis. I could make a playlist called Land of Confusion and strictly people it with all of the hits from Genesis and Phil and the other band members outside projects, and likely never be able to listen to it all at once😆

I had the privilege of seeing every Genesis/Phil tour from Duke until Knebworth '92 & would not have missed any of them for the World.

As for live aid; Phil is a perfectionist. I frankly didn't believe he was to blame at the time and nor do I believe it now 😉
Was you At Knebworth 90 when Phil did a solo set then Genesis appeared. Ok it wasn’t a full set but still a bit special
If you read Phil’s book, he explains how he got to drum behind LZ to begin with; how something that was originally pitched as a bit of a lark with his friend Robert Plant ended up being something worse as Jimmy Page blamed him for LZ’s horrible set (the fact that they were woefully unprepared and Page was as high as a kite didn’t factor into the disaster, I suppose).
Phil refuses to take the blame for LZ’s Live Aid mess, and he shouldn’t.
Phil also makes mention of the somewhat ominous vibe that enveloped Zeppelin’s crew when they all gathered backstage (Plant, Page and John Paul Jones included), that there was a darkness surrounding them when they gathered under the Zeppelin banner.
There must be something to that as I’ve read the same story from many different people over the years.
Did you get to see Live Aid in person?
Live Aid was caused by many different things. The sound was terrible during their time on. I heard they had sound issues. Phil was a great drummer but, like so many other drummers, it was hard for Led Zeppelin to feel comfortable and to work with other drummers outside of John Bonham. There was a system where Bonzo knew the hand signals from Jimmy Page and he also was so atuned to the other band members that he instinctively knew what to do and what was needed. The only drummer to come close to LZ feeling comfortable and able to get their groove with was his son, Jason.
Also, there was no real rehearsal time for the venue for them. It was like hurry up and go.
These hurt along with the guys not playing together for 5 years.
Many many things went wrong and Zeppelin was upset with the whole outcome. They openly said they did crappy.
@@vinceventresca6763 I thinnk by then Page was on recovery for heroin. He quit in the mid 80s like 83 or 85, sometime around then. But, he was still doing cocaine.
Phil was great w/Genesis, great solo, great on soundtracks, and he did duets & collabs w/among the best. A list too long to mention. This song is the best of 70s/80s pop, but 1984 was also The Best. Thanks for also giving EW&F and Philip Bailey their due, Prof.👊🏾
Phil Collins is rather inspiring in how he could combine prog and pop in a way that just works. Only someone as open as him could make deep music in such a pop culture context.

That is one of the reasons that Phil is one of my favorite musicians. I struggled as a youth to embrace what we now call Progressive Rock. It didn't seem accessible to me. On the outside, Phil is one of the people who helped me overcome that barrier.
Phil really wasn't a "prog" guy. That was more Tony Banks, Phil was more of a jazz drummer, which gave Genesis a different edge than the other prog bands of the time.

Such a classic mid-80s pop-rock staple. It never gets old. Killer vocal performances, great arrangements, inescapable hook.
Got to see Phil nearly 20 years ago. Sad that his health hasn't been the best these last few years. 😢
That said, listening to him is a guilty pleasure, be it his solo stuff, on Genesis, or on his side projects!

I would never have called myself a devoted Phil Collins 'fan' as such, but when you look at the output during that run (both quantity AND quality) it's pretty remarkable.
I would have to toss a coin between this and You Can't Hurry Love as my personal happy-poppy-Phil favourites.

True. Even though "You Can't Hurry Love" was a cover, it was obviously his love letter to '60s Motown and he did a great job with his arrangement.
Was there a Collins overload ? …Absolutely!!! And it made the decade!! The talent that this guy possesses is immense and I couldn’t imagine growing up not hearing the music he put out. It’s an awesome listen when you can pick a variety of songs, whether it be upbeat rockers or melancholy slow ballads, depending on your mood and you can get that all from one artist ….and it’ll fill your day! C’mon, I Want My PHIL tv!!

One of the greatest duo in the 80s decade ever and perhaps in music history, from these two amazing musicians. The extended dance remix by the John 'Tokes' Potoker is by far my favorite version, but the original one is awesome as well.

Phil Collins has to be the hardest working man in rock at that time. I had several of his albums on cassette tape in the 80's. And then CD in the 90's. I can listen to Phil for days. As far as I'm concerned there's no such thing as too much Phil Collins. Thank you.

I had the 45 single of this song when it came out and wore it out. I was so obsessed with the song. I'd actually completely forgotten about it until I heard it on the radio a couple of years ago and all the childhood memories came back.
This song was one of my choices as best duet from a previous episode. So happy to see it get a feature here. Phil Collins was integral to the sound of the '80s and is probably deservedly everywhere on classic radio today. That he was involved behind the scenes on so many other performers' work and not just as a drummer is not at all surprising but it takes a class with the professor to realize just how ubiquitous he was. What a great duet. This was probably my first memory of him. I was five when I first saw the video and always loved it. He's still a favorite of mine.

Phil Collins has a thin voice but he compensated by using a bass drum microphone to give his voice more body. By also playing multiple instruments, he is a master in the stu-stu-studio.

The Isley Brothers already had a song “Choosey Lover” from their album Between The Sheets from a year earlier in 1983, when it peaked at #6 on the R&B charts. Choosey lover, itself, sounds similar to the Earth, Wind & Fire track Devotion from 1974, co-written by Philip Bailey, which peaked at #33 on the Hot 100 in that year.
Phil is awesome. He consistently put out great songs in the 80's and 90's. Love me some Phil Collins! Definitely do a video on the led zeppelin live aid debacle.

I finally Got to see Geneis & Phil Colins in MSG NYC in 2022. He was still totally amazing even sitting in a chair the whole show. ESPECIALLY the cackle on "Mama". So glad I finally got to see him & Genesis (I'm 53 and could have seen them many a time)
"Easy Lover" is one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. Saw Genesis in the mid-1980s and Phil is also an amazing performer!
Considering only his productivity Phil Collins is just a phenomenon, specially during the 80s he seems to be unstoppable. And considering the quality of his production, well, we can agree that sometimes he was a formula and many song sounds like you have listened yet. But the best part of his creative output reach quality levels that aren't very common, specially today when I wish we have some Phil Collins creating those songs that everyone sings.
I remember when I first heard this on Armed Forces Radio when I was living in Brussels in 1984. You couldn’t get away from this song, and even now, it occasionally creeps back into my head as an earworm.

This is one of those songs that I'd long since forgotten about, but when you bring it up, it brings a smile to my face. It's interesting to hear the story about it.
At that time, my tastes were going alternative and not just a bit underground. Just because everyone else bought something didn't mean I had to. I still don't, for example, own a copy of Thriller.

Phil Collins is an amazing musician. I loved all his music including the Disney soundtracks from Tarzan and Brother Bear. EWF are an iconic band. I loved all their music as well. Almost every time you do one of these videos, you remind me of music I so enjoyed. So much music by so many great musicians, it's hard to keep it in your mind over the decades.
I remember, in the early 80s, riding home as a kid from a movie I went and seen with my family (Grease I think) and the countdown was on the radio. The DJ mentioned hiw Phil Collins had contracts all the way through 1987. It was a lot but he surpassed even that.

In my own personal Top 80 of the 80s, this one will land around 25 for me. Great groove, power vocals, and solid guitar solo. While I know horn sections were as prominent, but adding that would push the song near top ten for me. Great job POR on covering this tune! Cheers!

There was never too much Phil Collins in any form for me, whether solo or in Genesis or on a project.
As for Live-Aid, I’ve never blamed Phil, Tony or anyone else. I mean come, acclaimed drummer for Chic and Power Station. I chalked it up to lack of rehearsal time for all together. Bands that do two drummers do it often.

Phil used the EWF horns starting with the Face Value album. Even included them on Genesis' "Paperlate".

I always dug "Easy Lover". Phil and Philip are a consumate example of "so-different-they-are-exactly-the-same". What I didn't know until this segment was that the classic track was called from the demo. That's a classic Phil Collins practice that he learned from Hugh Padgham during the *Face Value* sessions.

I had no idea who Phillip Bailey was when this came out but I loved this song that just pleasantly rings on and on in your head.
If you didn't know the name, you knew the voice. Especially if you heard EWF's "Reasons".
I heard this song when it first came out and I loved it from that point on. The blend of their voices worked so well and while not the R&B of EWF or the Prog of Genesis it seemed to blend the two genres and meet in the middle (at least to me). I always liked Phil's voice starting with his work in Genesis and then on his solo but I wasn't "a fan" until I heard "In The Air Tonight". While not a super fan, I do own all of his recordings both solo and with Genesis and I really do like his solo works especially "I Don't Care Anymore", "Do You Know, Do You Care" and the aforementioned "In The Air Tonight". There is something about the moodiness of those songs that I really like. His more upbeat songs such as "Easy Lover" give you a change in tone and tempo from the darker songs and it blends well.
There is something about his works that unlike some artists didn't become monotonous when they were on the air all the time. Maybe it was the different sounds from Genesis and his solo works that changed it up enough that even though it was his voice, it wasn't "the same".
Saw your comment about Showbiz. I was a little older than it's audience when it came out but I did work for Chuck E. Cheese as a senior in High School. Was a fun time, though very hot, in the costumes. The memories....

Phil Collins truly has been the soundtrack to my life. I loved him in Genesis, I love him as a solo artist, I worshipped him in Live Aid, and I treasure every memory. My first Phil concert was on 17th April 1985. My last was a couple of years ago, but I hope there'll be more ❤❤❤
My all-time favorite musical artist. I realistically wouldn't be who I am today without Phil Collins. I've listened to him for over 30 years (I know that's not that long compared to some) and his songwriting has defined my life. I'm not overstating here. I grew up in the 80's and this was the prime time for Phil and Genesis. I was a teen and had my first experiences with love and romance during these times. Also with pain and loss. Phil was always there (through his music) to give me inspiration and to help me to grieve when I had to. I always wanted to see him in concert but for the majority of my life I never got the opportunity. Finally when I was all grown up and a dad, I got to see him in 2021 in Ohio along with Nick his son, Tony banks and Mike Ruthurford. It wasn't their peak days as a group but I didn't care. Phil was right in front of me at last. Things seemingly have come full-circle now. I'm a grown-up with a family of my own and have endured all that life has thrown at me up until now. With Phil always right at my side. Without him I honestly don't know what I would have done. No one else in music has held me up like he has. From your number one fan in the world Phil, I am eternally grateful. Thank you.

Yeah I doubt he does know. He put his heart and soul into everything he did and his current physical condition is in part, because of us. Not specifically but his love of making music over the decades really had an impact on his health and he sacrificed so much to bring us so much great inspiration through his music. @@injuhneer

Unfortunately ballads sell best. I agree with you. And believe it or not, a team of people agreed that wearing a "mullet" to shoot the Sussudio video, was the best way to market a middle aged balding man.

Every time I hear this song, and I hear it often on classic hits radio, I am transported back in time to calisthenics at band camp. Makes me smile, because marching band was the best thing about high school.

I never got to see Phil Collins in concert but whenever I had a chance to watch his show on TV he had my attention for his show. He was one of the top artists in the 80's that I'd crank up the radio for.
Queen’s secret sauce at Live Aid was they just finished a world tour and were rocket hot. Zep, on the other hand, hadn’t played together for five years, then took the stage with TWO drummers without any kind of rehearsal or prep. Yikes. (Robert Plant famously said they looked like “loonies.”) It was doomed to fail, but at least their hearts were in the right place.

December 1980 the world lost John Lennon. My broken heart didn’t start to mend until Phil Collins/Genesis hit MTV. Over saturation? I was used to that after the years owned by The Beatles, both collectively, and as solo artists. Hearing and seeing Phil and Genesis EVERYWHERE was a great joy. From Phil’s primal scream in the form of I Don’t Care Anymore, to his beautiful love songs, life went on. And tunes like Easy Lover made everyone smile and tap their toes.
