I can understand Elizabeth’s hesitation. She was temperamental but she wasn’t cruel and she wanted to protect her cousin even though her councilors were like “ we know she’s family but that never stopped your dad so…”
I agree with you, When they portray a movie about Elizabeth and Mary together one always feels “better” than the other. But I’m super excited for Elizabeth woodville one of my favorite historical figures and VERY underrated one
I think that although Mary was very intelligent, she wasn't "street smart", at least not when she first came to Scotland. Elizabeth had grown up constantly looking over her shoulder & surviving by her wits, but Mary was always loved & protected as a child & a young woman. I believe her innate kind-heartedness made her look for the good in everyone (even John Knox about whom very little good can be found) & this put her at a definite disadvantage. She ruled with her heart, not her head.
They always try to make Mary have the last laugh through her son James when James didn’t really care all that much for her and by the end of her life she felt abandoned by him. It’s also just sexist to Elizabeth. She didn’t get married and have children so somehow she “lost”
Also they never show her abicatuon right as she had only a small time ago lost twins and was basically threatened to abdicate or she could lose her life. She was as alone emotively and physically ill due to the loss and she couldn't even see her only real reason to keep going.... Her barely a year son James
I wanna think being cousins, they should have been sure allies. Mary wanted to think she could count on family. I can see some of the ways Elizabeth would feel a little insecure even before the plots because she had people constantly challenging her right to the throne. Mary, was born a queen and no one in Scotland seems to have challenged this much
Mary shouldn’t be portrayed as a martyr it was a battle for the throne between her and Elizabeth and in the end Mary lost history is full of similar stories

This is so true! James rarely, if ever, honored his mother's legacy!

Also Bothwell had already fled at this point
In the words of Martin Scorsese: "Absolute Cinema"

True
In movies,Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I met. But in reality, they actually never met.
In the serpent queen, they went with the dark haired Mary like why?
