Agreed....sand has a tendency to mix with the dirt as a part of the freeze and thaw cycles. And eventually, after that happens, the bricks are no longer level
Yeah its weird that they use gravel with fines and dont use polymeric sand? Im in wisconsin and we use like 7 inches of clear gravel and then screed 1/4 inch clear gravel to lay the bricks on and then sweep in sand that has glue in it
There is many ways to lay a brick patio and achieve the same results. Just have a basic understanding of how the materials function and that the ground is not solid and can change over the years. I did my own patio by digging out and leveling the soil with just a cast iron hand tamper and a gardening trowel and a 5 foot wall framing level, then laying down landscaping fabric, then laying down the really cheap garbage quality sand that has gravel and rocks and all that stuff in it, then putting down the bricks and tamping them in place, and then sweeping over them with a ton of that mortar powder that clumps into clay when wet after I was certain they were all level. After the first rainfall they were locked in place rock solid. Maybe that's not the "professional" way but it still works and I'm happy with it. I worked in a couple foot sections at a time and triple checked that everything was going straight and not skewing off crooked.
Madd Dogg take a measure of why you need it or simply make a mark on the brick. Pull out your handy angle grinder that has attached to it a diamond saw blade(tile mans blade) and proceed to cut like butter.
Or how about frost heave? Or freeze/thaw cycles...doesnt the sand beliw the pavers gets mixed with the dirt below? I mean, it would settle into the spaces between the rock and then mix over time, right?
They don't say what to do with the 2inch pipe anyone have any ideas I'm sure they remove but how do you keep the space for the pipe from falling once removed
Um, no, you _want_ a coarser sand because its job is to act like little sharp wedges that lodge in and stick to the sides of the pavers with plenty of locking friction. Also: "way to thick to fill..."? Oops, didn't you mean "way toO thick to fill..."?
As a professional hardscape company owner almost everything in this video goes against what we do. One need minimum of 6" of granular 'A’ as base, plus 1" of bedding/concrete sand, running on 1" pipes...
Kourosh - Do you have any videos? In the Spring I need to reset pavers I have that are sagging. It's a small area so I was going to pull up all of them because it is holding water.
Lex Luther Hi Lex, I don't have any videos uploaded on TH-cam. What I would recommend you to do is to follow ICPI guidelines for concrete pavers installation. Make sure you have proper slope for drainage.
As a professional hardscaping company, that installs 2-5 patios a month every year, this video goes against everything that our company does. (At least in freezing climates) We never ever use sand for patios, and replace at least 10 patios a year that have been constructed with a sand base. In fact, we use all clear stone (no fines).
There are NO videos of laying a brick floor over a cement walkway. whats up with that? I am about to wash down the walk way, brush some concrete glue on, mix my mortar with a little additive and lay the brick down like pavers, maybe I will butter the edges of each brick or maybe I will just lay the brick down and grout it like tile, idk. does that sound good to you?
Ive noticed it seems 90% of your customers are single women, why do you think this is so? Its really confussing to non-americans that there is such a powerful correlation. Any reasons for this? This Old House
allnamesarepicked Where did you get that information? They only talk about building the patio. Why are you recording that information anyway? Sounds like you’re a creep
Wow this guy has to get off TH-cam what he is showing people is all wrong and it will not last for very long your lucky if u make it one summer without it moving
Well, Sole, even if you hadn't been facetious, the "what" question is a good one, because _everyone_ has an accent. (If it's noticeable only depends on what culture the listener is from.)
“Plenty of blu taarps!” Awesome.
Thank you, great video. No extra useless advice or talking. Straight to the point! Myself and others alike appreciate videos like this.
love the realism. the weather never holds up when you start working outside :P
I had cats keep using it as a litterbox during the sand layer
When hammering in the spikes into the retaining edge, angle it so that you're pressing the edge towards the pavers instead of pulling it away.
That home owner experienced true level that day and when she stepped away she realized everything is crooked and reality is poison.
I miss this guy
The best on the show IMHO
Looks like he just passed away. Only 70.
Loving the brick pattern. Used to enjoy watching the lads laying the brick sidewalks when I was in engineering. Great to see it being done. Thanks.
For non-freezing climates, this is an easy, practical way for homeowners to do their own brick-paving.
Agreed....sand has a tendency to mix with the dirt as a part of the freeze and thaw cycles. And eventually, after that happens, the bricks are no longer level
@@NitaSedaithat’s why you use gator dust instead of sand duh
This sounds like East coast USA which is definitely a freezing climate. What would you do?

👏 👏.👌 💯 ,good job s, nice paving, 👏 👏.👌
That's odd. I didn't see any mention of a "pitch".
Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing
How much would something like this cost?
Can someone tell me what stops the sand from washing out of the joints when it rains?
Polymeric sand 'sets' after the first wash with water.
Or how about frost heave? Or freeze/thaw cycles...doesnt the sand beliw the pavers gets mixed with the dirt below? I mean, it would settle into the spaces between the rock and then mix over time, right?
Good work and a nice project. Thank you.

pull it out and fill in the gap with some left over sand. Smooth it out with a trowel.

Is it not needed there?

why didn't he put plastic/or weed cloth between the gravel or sand to keep plants out?
also, how did he cut the smaller bricks? I'm sure they had a wet saw on hand.
Weeds are going to grow thru 7 inches on stone and brick lol?

Why sand? Why not limestone screening?
Is screening for big pavers and sand for small little brick pavers?
it's probably concrete sand

Why remove exactly 7 inches? How do you determine that?
Paver height, sand & rock depth combined
They wanted the patio to match the entranceway steps in height
Note to self.........; 0:53 - 2:16. The MOST important part of re-laying the patio in your own back yard.

So why not use polymeric sand? Besides the fact that it’s a bit pricey...

Looks great!
@1:03 Are the rails sitting directly on the base material, or was there some sand placed underneath the rails to put them right at 2" below the line?
Papoochee depends. Base is sent it with less accuracy. Rails are set via stringline so you may have to raise it with the sand
I personally would hate brick but it came out good! Must be hard to get it so leveled and straight
Brick is timeless
The sand you used is way to thick to fill the gaps in the block paving. You should have used a finer sand to fill the gaps instead of regular sand.
Um, no, you _want_ a coarser sand because its job is to act like little sharp wedges that lodge in and stick to the sides of the pavers with plenty of locking friction. Also: "way to thick to fill..."? Oops, didn't you mean "way toO thick to fill..."?

Because people don't make cement walkways. Maybe the hardest kind of walkway that has cement _in_ it is a *concrete* walkway.
I feel like I've seen this recently.
