They started reminiscing about going to the same all-girls school in New York City and how their education shaped the trajectory of their lives in different ways. (And also about that time Jennifer Lopez was Kerry Washington’s dance teacher.) Kerry Washington told us why her heart breaks a little for her eleven-year-old self and what it was like learning to navigate her feelings. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kerry Washington talked about motherhood and being a stepparent. And about stepping into their power and the conversations that push us beyond comfort zones.

Wow, I am really impressed by this interview! Not EVERYTHING is about race, but Kerry Washington is a black woman. I knew that she & Gwyneth had went to school together and wondered if Kerry would touch on her particular experience as brown skin girl, receiving an education surrounded by white folks. I'm so happy Kerry didn't shy away speaking the truth of her experience. Gwyneth is good interviewer as well; she listened, and didn't interrupt or constantly insert her opinion. Kerry so insightful and intelligent!!
Kerry is such an eloquent woman. The way she speaks is so inspiring and conscious.
I'm so impressed with how Gwyneth didn't shy away from addressing Kerry's 'otherness' in didn't phases of her life.
wow spence is one of the most elite prep schools in New York I didn’t know Kerry Washington went there. as a black girl who went to a predominantly white prep school on a scholarship I have never identified with a celebrity so much as I have right now
I knew that Kerry was a graduate of Spence, ever since I heard about her, from save the last dance. I tend to do research on people that I like. Which prep school did you attend?

This conversation went deep. Gwyneth and Kerry really complimented each other on levels of conversation that can make a person feel uncomfortable. It made me feel very peaceful.

Kerry is just a refreshing person in general . In one conversation you’re going to learn new vocabulary, facts you never knew, and a point of view you never thought of and her voice sounds like a hug personified 🤗 I could only dream of meeting her but she did wish me happy birthday last week

I met Gwyneth years ago at my job exactly 1 week before the Oscars, where she was up for best actress in Shakespeare In Love. It was one of my top movies that year (I had seen it twice). Anyway, I was able to tell her face to her face that I was routing for her. She was so gracious and humble and said, "thank you, that is so nice of you." I wished her a good day and she said, "thank you, you have a good day too."
Oh wow! Cheesy question, but does she look the same in person as she does on screen 🙈

I know several black kids who went to one of the independent schools and they all have identity issues. They are highly intelligent so they pick up on the differences visually, psychologically & emotionally but don’t have the maturity to process it. Happy she prioritized her mental health. Kerry is awesome! 💪🏾

I've always loved Kerry Washington, but I didn't know much about Gwyneth Paltrow, though from what I knew of her from movies, etc, she always struck me as someone who is talented.
I loved this particular interview because there's just something organic about how Kerry and Gwyneth vibe. Both strike me as highly intelligent, talented and beautiful women. Such great role models for girls and women!

I'm a huge fan of Kerry Washingtons, both women are lovely but I was so impressed how Kerry opened up so much about her family and though she is a private person let people in a bit and was willing to answer all the questions and so honestly. Love Kerry's approach. Especially as young as she was to know not to make her parents feel less than. What a clever, smart women.
I was struck by Gwyneth asking "Are you a Virgo?" As a writer, avid keeper of journals, and a Virgo, I feel her perceptions, astrologically speaking, are quite astute. Kerry's eloquence and emotional intelligence are enlightening. It is quite rare to see such qualities tethered to such a gregarious, exuberant personality.

I recently watched the ski accident trial and I couldn't wrap my brain around Ms. Paltow's seemingly unemotional, honestly removed persona that came across as "better than."
Next, and as the result, videos related to her appeared in my feed. Curious, I opened one about her home and it revealed not only a classy woman but a woman who isn't afraid to reveal her success -- that SPA room!!
I also watched her Vogue photo book interview and there I saw her humor and her being herself.
And now this video. She is comfortable. She's thoughtful in her questions ...
The lesson: We should stand in who we are, and let others see us as they choose.

I know it is simplistic to say this, but I often wonder if GP realizes how much luck has played a role in her life. Lucky to be born white, blond and beautiful. Lucky to grow up in wealth, summer in the Hamptons, receive a private-school education, and have parents in the entertainment industry so she never really had to struggle to get roles. She has been breathing the rarefied air of being on the A-list since she was in her 20s, and listening to this, it sounds like she breezed through the social world of HS just as easily. Like Kerry says in the beginning, there are many things in life that are not accessible to you if you are born with “too much melatonin”.

I like Gwyneth's interview style, as it is genuinely inquisitive and interested in the person across. Maybe, it's because she is intelligent & non-judgmental. Two great, incredibly talented and intelligent women. Gwyneth is a great interviewer and Kerry is such an eloquent person. I loved each second of it. I am a brazilian-german citizen. I just watched "American Son" and felt every word and feeling of it on my skin and heart. Not to mention the tears, anger and all the mixed astonishment we black people are acquainted with.
