Looking back and thinking about my very first playthrough of Banjo when I was young... Some worlds that felt lackluster for me would be Desert, Rusty Bucket, and Click Clock. I must have had the most fun going through the hub and unlocking worlds, the sense of progression was very well done, and some nicely hidden secrets, like taking the transformations out of the levels for jiggies and cheatos. Most of the music had a fun melody, and Grunty's cackling in the lair... Yooka Laylee, from what I've watched so far, doesn't do much to replicate those things.
Really don't get why people are disappointed in this game. You wanted Banjo Kazooie right? This is it. Take off your fucking rose-tinted nostalgia glasses. If Banjo Kazooie came out nowadays, it would probably get 7/10 or 7.5/10, but because it came out on N64 it's permanently cemented as a 10/10 in everyone's mind. The gaming community has gotten so spoiled that a game is either "the best game ever" or it's a "piece of shit". There's no in between. Most complaints I've heard about the game (besides performance issues on XBONE) have been things that existed in literally every 3D platformer for the N64. You get what you paid for. This is an above average game that is only held back by its lack of innovation.
What? I just 100% Banjo Kazooie during winter break because of this game. That game is still fun to play. I'll probably just play Banjo and Tooie all the way through for the first time instead of buying this empty feeling game.
Are you kidding? Yooka Laylee's worlds are objectively larger than Banjo's, there's just less of them. If you want to argue that the world's feel more empty that's fine, but don't say they're claustrophobic when they are objectively larger. Meh characters? Yooka is pretty close to Banjo and Laylee is literally just Kazooie in bat form. Laylee and Kazooie are the same character. Music and audio design? Did you play any N64 games? This game would fit in with those just fine. The only thing you mentioned that I'll say is valid is the lack of innovation but, you have to remember, the kickstarter for this game was to create a spiritual successor to Banjo Kazooie. If they innovated, people would've bitched that they just wanted an old school 3D platformer. They gave what people said they wanted, and that was no new innovation, just another 3D platformer like the N64 days. That's what they got.

Nothing great. Above average, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's so stupid that people will only play games that get 8-10/10 when there are plenty of amazing games that get 7/10. All a 7/10 means is that the game is above average and is not for everyone. Still will be worth playing for many people and will be deeply beloved by many more. I think the speed runs of this game will be extremely fun to watch and look forward to them.

For instance: Mass Effect Andromeda, while a massive disappointment that I will not be buying, isn't as terrible as he said. The combat is probably the game's one saving grace, but he still shat on it. Other examples include his dislike of Hitman (2016 version), which he thought was constrictive, and I thought was fantastic.
