Growing up in Fiddletown left room for trouble as there wasn't that much to do there. Behind the Chinese Gambling Hall, we had a rope swing, and the park with playground next to Chew Key Store. In my earlier childhood, there was the Fiddletown General Store which has now become a private residence.

I used to live in a very old building where the interior was remodeled for residential living. It is located across the street from the community center with the "Big Fiddle" and was supposedly the original Post Office. There were a couple paranormal incidents in the beginning that troubled me. I left the house one morning and decided to address the troubling concerns. Upon returning I spoke out loud " I'm renting so my being here is temporary. So I'd appreciate being left alone. I'm not asking you to leave, I just don't want to know you are here." I lived there for a year+ and didn't get any more surprises. As real as the events were for me I tend to become skeptical myself when I recount them. BTW "a big shout out to my friend Michele...Hey, Girl!'

Very enjoyable video of one of my favorite towns in the California Mother Lode. Since Fiddletown is not located on historic Highway 49, it doesn't get as many visitors as it should. As you said in the video, there was a large population of Chinese in Fiddletown until the early 20th Century. They left behind three early gold rush buildings that make Fiddletown unique among Mother Lode mining towns. The Chinese Gambling Hall and Chinese General Store were recently preserved. The Chew Kee Store, now a museum, contains objects from the herb doctor who founded it in 1855. The Chew Kee Store is open on Saturdays from 12 noon to 4 :00 pm through October this year.

We were there on a week day and were disappointed we couldn't go in the museum. However, we met some kind people and very much enjoyed our visit! Thanks for your comments

The rammed earth built building at the outskirts of town, is associated with the Chinese, however, the red brick buildings now being branded, "Chinese Gambling Hall" and "Chinese General Store", DID NOT originate with the Chinese. These red brick and mortar buildings were built by brick masons, probably from Missouri. The history of these two buildings go back much further than when the Chinese may or may not have, occupied them. History does not begin at a point that certain individuals find appealing. The builders, the building occupants, and the original usages of the two red brick and mortar buildings, should not be erased or purposely overlooked. These buildings were not constructed by the Chinese, but by Caucasian brick masons. In 2009, no placards referencing Chinese occupants were mounted on the two buildings, only on the small, rammed earth house. Today, someone has placed them on them. I'm curious about the quantity of Chinese in Fiddletown, since the town was tiny, it was never a boom town, and I cannot find a single grave for these, supposed, "2,000" Chinese, that appeared to have wandered into every single ghost town in the Gold Country, but left nothing behind to verify their actual populations in any of these towns, not even a grave. The rammed earth structure, at the edge of town, can be credited to a Chinese builder and occupant, but certainly not the two brick and mortar, mason built structures. Caucasian or white miners or settlers did construct the red brick and mortar buildings.
