I had my W58 rebuilt minus the no longer available input or output shafts. The noise I took it in for is still there and sounds scary driving in 5th. I am forced to go for an R154, or go for the TH 400 conversion. If you know where I can find what I need, I'd love to keep the W58.
w58's have a bad rep because back in the day you couldn't even find aftermarket clutches for them. nowadays there's lots of options for rebuilds, but IMO I'd just slap a cd009 in ;)
Ppl get w58s all wrong. The tripod and swan neck are different then all the others. They have triple synchros and wider bearings. I’ve had mine above 500 hp driving it hard It’s the older mk3 boxes and celica boxes that are weak. I will almost say the tripod and swan neck are just as strong as the mk3 r154
That looks like a Lisle 36200 he used to remove the keepers... 30$ There is also something called a valve master for about 90$. I tried finding these just a few years ago and couldn’t now you can get that lisle next day...
Yeah i have my w58 still, i dont mind it with my na-t. i dont do launches but i have yet to see any problems with it and im on a stage 4 competition cluch with it so it sees just about all the torque my engine is putting out. However i just dont like only have 5 gears, its way to much of a tight ratio. cruising at 75-80 mph and the thing is at like 3700 rpm give or take. and by the time you're at like 130 you can tell your engine has more but the gearing just isnt there. Great for canyons though in my opinion. I'll be switching to the 370z transmission.
Review Guy the high reving on that mile per hr might have to do with your diff more then the tranny though, my buddies is wayy lower then 3700 on that mile per hr with the stock lsd diff.
W58s are ratted at around 400-500hp. Record holder is a guy from Australia with 650hp stock. R154s are ratted at around 700-800hp. Record holder was Duane from Canada with around 1000 hp stock. V160 are rated at around 1100-1200 hp. Record holder unknown, but have seen many at around 1500 hp stock. Usually these guys with over powered Supras...are respecting and treating properly their transmissions without banging gears and general don't make crazy launches and trying to get into orbit in space! :-)
Well my brothers has been making 475hp to the wheels through a w58 for 2yrs now.. no launches or drifting. Strictly highway pulls. So depends on how you abuse it
Does the air hose have some adapter or connection that screws into the spark plug area? I noticed you twisted the hose inward. Please let me know because I will be doing my Mkiv soon. Thanks!

W58 is a mk3 in a mkiv weird I replaced my stock W58 with r154 when I swapped from 7mge to 1jzgte

The w58 lives longer behind a 1j because the 1j doesn't make as much torque as the 2j. The 2j breaks the w58 faster than a 1j.
