I came here after Antman but I was well aware of this great song's existence already. Thank you Scott, Hope & Kang for putting this back into the mainstream today
That part where he says 'I should've listened to my old man' always upsets me. My relationship with my Dad wasn't the best, so whenever I hear that line, I wish my Dad was around to guide and set me straight. What a great song.
Me: if only I listened what dad said to me before he passed away, I couldn't be like this poor. Sister: what did he tell you? Me: I don't know, told you I wasn't listening...😅
You are so right. And that for example the band Queen is gone, we all know that their songs, voices and instrument play will never exist again is so sad
I disagree, music like this will certainly be missed by you and yours but that's true for every generation and the music they use to define themselves. I love the music I grew up with and ill miss it when 10 years have passed and the music scene changes like it did for you but it will always come back in one way or another, weather that is during your life or not.
What a beautiful song to depart this world to, I had a near death experience and was dead for 90 seconds I saw my long past relatives I know you will see your father again.
I’m always tempted to think this is the song heard in the John Denver and the muppets Christmas special, in the scene where Miss piggy plays Fifi and John Denver a Tin soldier who come running towards each other in slow motion. And of course that’s a slow version of “I will wait for you,” which Miss Piiggy sings as she waits for John.
As a black kid growing up in the 70s, I didn't know him. My older sister had a few Elton John albums(remember those). I wasn't allowed to touch her albums... but I did it anyway. So glad I did😄. That's how I learned about his music. Much respect to the legendary Elton John. Enjoy the retirement, you sir deserve all the flowers 💐
Black kid grew up in the 80's 90's mainly on old soul, r&b and hip hop. It was just at random I caught this on the radio. I already loved "That's why they call it the blues" but didn't know who this was. I just love music, the harmony takes m3 beyond music
This song has become a personal anthem for me whenever I finish a series or an intense arc in a show 😅 it’s also lately been the song playing over and over about figuring out if I should quit my job.
If there are any young folks out there listening to this song and happen to read this comment. The grass isn't always greener on the other side! I fought so hard to get away from where I grew up. It finally happened when I turned 20. It lasted about 10 months for me, and I couldn't wait to return to my roots! Just think about that....Song is a masterpiece!!!
I never really listened to the lyrics of this song, but in a dream last night i re imagined them.. cant recall the whole song but i do remember his golden voice singing, "I'll be the brightest star of them all" as he lifted off the planet, soared through the heavens on a cosmic journey, and finally arrived and took his place as the brightest star in a constellation. A sort of tribute dream i guess, made me a little sad, i'm glad i got to at least hear him sing in concert two nights in a row, even if i was working outside the stadium where he was performing. I know after a long career he is probably looking forward to leaving the rigors of touring and public appearances behind him, he has certainly earned it, even extending his farewell tour, but he will always be remembered as one of the greatest performers. His star will always shine bright.
Hm, one of the few songs to make me shed a tear I’ll admit. Especially now, with me starting adulthood and pretty soon leaving my hometown to bigger and better things. It’s sad, leaving everything behind that you’ve known to the unknown massive world out there. But you know sometimes, we just gotta let go. And as much as I despise it, sometimes you have to say goodbye.
Happy 50th anniversary to this song, it was released around this time in 1973! It’s late December as I post this comment. It made the top ten songs of 1973, together with “Crocodile Rock,” also by Elton John, “Bad bad Leroy Brown,” Jim Croce, “Brother Louie,”(Stories), and “Rambling Man,”(Allman Brothers Band.) May it live on for another 50 years!!!
No matter what… this song will always have a spot in my heart. It’s special, it’s the first song that made me cry, it’s the only song that has made me let out my emotions, and it’s the only song that has reached deep inside of me.
The song is actually about not being able to go back, he "finally decided my future lies, beyond the yellow brick road". He has out grown his old home, "where the dogs of society howl".
@alpconn223 he never clarifies the yellow brick road is home. I take it as yellow brick road was leaving where he's from. And it not turning out to be so great. So he's coming back!
My interpretation is he grew up poor in the country with simple pleasures like nature. Went to the big city met a person with money. Wizard of Oz the Yellow Brick Road led to Emerald City. Remember thats where they got pampered and made over. Social elite aka dogs of society. He's being treated like an object. Planted in the penthouse. Song is an internal struggle of stay in this rich existence unfulfilled and unhappy or leave for a simple existance in the country but happy. His lover can easily find another poor kid enamored by the thought of living the "good life".
@@BBBILLY86that's the beauty of the song. It is open to interpretation, for me it's getting out of a high paying job that was killing me. Being pulled in a hundred directions and worn out before my time. Trying to be everything to everyone. After 20 years I came home and started doing what really matters, being there for family and maintaining what all my ancestors fought to build. I'm much happier now than I was in the corporate life. I am actually back on two farms, and working on my relationship with my father, mother and son.
I love this song. It's so poetic. My aunt who was also my best friend loved Elton John. She died in July 2024. Listening to him helps me feel a little closer to her even though I know she's far away. Life is too short and it goes by in a blink. Don't waste a minute. Tomorrow is yesterday before you even exhale. My head is spinning trying to understand where time went.

Elton Johns music is timeless
The desire to return to a simpler former life, where one remembers being happy.
The song is actually about not being able to go back, he "finally decided my future lies, beyond the yellow brick road". He has out grown his old home, "where the dogs of society howl".
Longing for the good old days usually isn’t very smart. Ecclesiastes 7:10.
